Gilt trip: Metallic makeup

Chanel fall winter 2008 beauty, gold makeup, silver makeup, bronze makeup, metallic makeup, Jennifer Lopez, Zoya Nail Polish in Laney, Lancôme Ô My Rose Le Vernis Colour and Shine Nail Polish in B.B. Sand, Thierry Mugler Ombre Stellaire Mono Eye Shadow in Mercury, YSL Golden Gloss Shimmering Lip Gloss in Simply Gold, Clinique Shimmering Tones Powder in Golden Bronze

Okay, I’m officially Olympics-obsessed. And proving that I can find a beauty angle for just about anything, today’s post is all about metallic makeup. (In shades of gold, silver and bronze—get it?) The most extreme example is this runway shot from Chanel’s fall/winter 2008 show, where models wore gold pigment not only on their lids but also in their hair. For real life, stick with your lids only and concentrate the colour from lash line to crease. Or for a more sheer effect, you can do a light wash of silver across the lids like Jennifer Lopez. Here are a few of my top picks for getting a gilted look:

1. Zoya Nail Polish in Laney

From the Reverie collection, which hit stores last month, this is the perfect high-shine silver.

2. Lancôme Ô My Rose Le Vernis Colour and Shine Nail Polish in B.B. Sand

Another metallic option, this one from Aaron de Mey’s gorgeous collection for Lancôme. Out this month.

3. Thierry Mugler Ombre Stellaire Mono Eye Shadow in Mercury

I’ve raved before about how much I love this shadow, which can go as sheer or as pigmented as you like. (Just layer until you get the desired concentration of colour.) Expensive, but you won’t be disappointed.

4. YSL Golden Gloss Shimmering Lip Gloss in Simply Gold

The subtle gold pigments in this gloss make for a fun twist on your usual basic nude. Plus, it smells amazing!

5. Clinique Shimmering Tones Powder in Golden Bronze

Clinique does a version of this compact every year. Not only is it pretty to look at, but it’s also quite versatile—you can use the colours individually on your eyes or even lips, or swirl the colours around with a big, fluffy brush and sweep it across the high points of your face for a bronzey glow.
