wrinkled suntan lady beach

I’ve posted this pic before, so why don’t we make it an annual ritual? Because THIS illustrates, more than any ranting I can do, why we all need to be wearing sunscreen.

Now don’t get me wrong—I think a little bit of sun can be healthy. (We need the sun to produce vitamin D, which is ESSENTIAL for good health. But you can also get your vitamin D levels up by supplementing with a high-quality cod liver oil. Yes, I’m obsessed with my cod liver oil these days.)

But none of us should be baking, roasting, grilling, frying—whatever the term is for what this woman has done to her skin.

So if you do lie out, tend to burn easily or know you’ll be in the sun during peak hours (11am-3pm), PLEASE wear one of these new sunscreens for the body. View gallery »

Yikes! Obviously that kid thought she was pretty nasty looking also.

I need to keep a sunscreen in my purse in case I have lunch outdoors. It’s like keeping a bathing suit in your desk drawer in the summer months. You never know when an impromptu pool party invitation will present itself. Always be prepared.

Its funny how in asian countries they are obsessed with being fair and white, and in north american countries they want to be tanned and darker. I personally dont like tans I think everyone should love their natural skin color.

@Pria – agreed to a point… tans can help camouflage figure flaws. I know I feel 10x more confident in a bikini when I have some colour vs. being pasty white. Thankfully I can get it out of bottle!

I love getting tanned as well but since I moved to China a year ago Im impressed to see Asian peoples skin, even old peoples. The fact that they protect themselves from the sun really gives them a healthy skin and actually even if I love then sun, ive started to be careful using daily face sunscreen and not staying hours in the sun (before I used to stay even 8 hours in the beach during the hole summer). I took a picture with my chinese friends last week and I was as white as them! lol It doesnt look so nice but i feel the skin is healthier!!!

@Laura – yes that is definitely the reason why Asian women have such beautiful skin! I’ve seen some women carrying parasols on hot days… looks silly but pays off in the long term!

While I COMPLETELY agree that protecting your skin is one of the absolute best ways to prevent damaging, aging effects, (not to mention preventing skin CA), in my opinion, the reason why that lady’s sking is hanging off her body so & wrinkly is more likely because she lost a lot of weight very quickly, i.e.- gastric bypass surgery. I’m a nurse at a hospital & for whatever reason I seem to work with a lot of people who’ve either had gastric bypass or the lap band. Gastric bypass seems to produce much more rapid weight loss, (not at a healthy rate nor in a healthy way if you ask me), that results in skin that looks like it’s literally hanging off of the arms, legs, stomach, etc. I could go on & on about both the importance of protecting your skin from the sun as well as losing weight in a healthy, natural, non-surgical way but people are probably tired of reading this already… I will end with this though: our bodys are designed w/ stomachs for a reason, when the stomach surface area is reduced to a mere fraction of what it was through surgical intervention, yeah, sure it can’t absorb the same amount of calories & fat… guess what… it also can’t absorb the same amont of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and wonderful, beyond-important substances we NEEEED. Furthermore, the foremost Drs & scientists will tell you: they do not know the long-term possible negative consequences of these bariatric surgeries. These procedures were intended for people who were terminally obese, now it seems like if it can be proved that you’re at risk for developing diabetes, which MOST Americans probably are, it’s like “yes, Dr. Cuts-a-lot has an opening next Friday at 7 am, he’d love to slice you open & reduce your stomach to the size of a walnut then!” I exaggerate & digress. Whatever happened to exercise, a healthy diet & putting on some sunscreen America?

Great comment Abbey and I fully agree! (Haha re: Dr. Cuts-a-lot)
I’ve never thought such radical surgeries were the way to go for weight loss – sounds like the long-term side effects are pretty scary as well! Very sad.
