Today’s Babe in the Biz is a beauty trailblazer. Back in 2006—many magazine jobs ago—the idea of starting a beauty blog hadn’t even occurred to me. But that’s when Ellen Mirza launched her VERY successful Lipstick Powder N Paint blog (lipstickpowdernpaint.com), which literally put beauty blogging in Canada on the map.
Before Ellen came on the scene, us beauty editors were a pretty insular group. But she single-handedly grew her site to the point where brands (and editors!) sat up and took notice of the tremendous influence bloggers can have. (She’s even scored mentions in WWD and New York magazine’s The Cut!) Honestly, Janine and I always talk about how much we owe to Ellen for her trailblazing ways.
And on that note, let’s hear what Ellen has to say about her faves from the MANY beauty products she’s tried over the years:
Beauty Insider Credentials I have a burning passion for beauty products. I literally get a wave of sheer excitement when I see new products. Colour, texture, smell, pretty packaging. Is it the same for all gals? I started Lipstick Powder N Paint four years ago so that I could share my love of all things beauty-ful. I now have several talented writers that contribute to the site and I work with them to ensure we talk about the newest and hippest products.
Beauty Icon Kate Winslet—hands down. What a natural beauty she is.
Top Five Products Only five?! That’s a hard one as there are so many amazing products I enjoy using on a daily basis…
Givenchy Phenomen’Eyes Mascara. I was a little freaked-out at first by the wand, but now I adore it. My lashes are luscious and quite sassy—if I do say so myself.
Dior Diorshow Brow Styler Ultra-Fine Precision Brow Pencil. My brows can look ultra-natural or super-striking depending on how I feel that day. [This is one of my favourites too! -Ed.]
For a pretty summer glow, I’m currently loving Guerlain’s new Terracotta 4 Seasons Tailor-Made Bronzing Powder. It’s a clever little product—four perfect matte shades that can be blended together to match every skin tone.
To cover up tired-looking eyes from late nights working and early mornings taking out the pups, Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Talc-Free Mineral Correcting Concealer Trio is my hero! The yellow is amazing for hiding those pesky dark circles.
These days, I can be found with glossy coral lips, and I have my Flurry of Fun Tinted Lipglass from M.A.C to thank.
Beauty Splurges I have super-sensitive skin and breakout with most products. I choose to splurge on great fragrance-free cleansers and moisturizers. You only have one skin.
Beauty Bargains Glosses, eye shadows and mascaras from the drugstore are perfect to scrimp on. Plus, you can buy more of them as they are less expensive!
First Fragrance It was a lovely little bottle of Chanel No. 5. I was barely a teenager and thought it was the most luxurious and special gift I had ever received.
Current Fragrance Would you believe that after many, many years (did I say many?!) I am still loyal to Chanel? I have been wearing Allure Sensuelle since it launched. What can I say; I enjoy having a signature scent.
Weird Beauty Habit I wear a mouth guard at night because I grind my teeth when I sleep—it’s dreaming about all those beauty products!
Biggest Beauty Fail There have been so many funny beauty moments in my life. There was the perm that made me look like a poodle, the electric blue eyeliner I thought that made me look so cool, the insanely overplucked brows that did absolutely nothing for my face. But the one my husband shakes his head at is the scary “Mohawk” haircut I sported when I was a mere 13 years old. Not my best moment. No, I will not be sharing photos.
Beauty Pet Peeve Tammy Faye lashes. You know what I’m talking about—those gals that have applied about 17 coats of their favourite mascara to those poor lashes. Do they think that their lashes look fuller and lusher? They look hideous!
Career Advice Blogging is definitely fun and when starting out, [it] costs you pretty much nothing. But if you wish it to be your full-time job, realize that unfortunately you may not be making much money (if any) for quite some time. Contact the sites or blogs that you love most and ask them how they started and what tips they can share. I did that and was thrilled by the response I received from many of my favourite blogs. And, I still keep in touch with them to this day.
Next week’s Babe is a bit of a departure from beauty but I think you’ll enjoy her picks all the same (they’re very French!). Stay tuned for the beauty scoop on lifestyle and entertaining expert Kim Vallée…
