If there’s one thing all beauty editors* all do, it’s worship at the Church of Sunscreen.
*I think Kim Kardashian is technically a beauty editor—OK! Magazine appointed her to the role of contributing beauty editor last year—but this photo proves otherwise, don’t you think? No REAL beauty editor would burn her face to a crisp!
Anyway, back to sunscreen. Forgive us for preaching so much about it—I know I just did a round-up of sunscreens for the body—but can we talk about our faces this time? I know you all know this (or at least I hope you do!), but it’s worth repeating (and bolding/capitalizing):
If you’re really concerned about wrinkles, sagging and uneven skin tone as you age—and who isn’t these days?—avoiding the sun is the ONLY proven way to slow down the process. Despite all the wrinkle creams we like to tell you about.
In fact, if you could only use one thing for the skin on your face, it would be sunscreen, NOT wrinkle cream.
Yep—I’ve done countless interviews with dermatologists over the years and not one has said anything different. (I’ve had people tell me that it doesn’t matter—they love baking in the sun and they’ll just correct the damage when it shows up later with all the various peels, injections and creams available now. Okay, I know that technology has come a long way, but PLEASE don’t try this.)
Tomorrow, I’m going to address some of the most common reasons why you might not be wearing sunscreen (and my solutions!). But today, let’s start with the fun part—checking out the products! Some of these are new and some are beauty editor favourites:
As always, let me know in the comments if you’ve tried any of these or have a sunscreen question you need answered!

Josie Maran’s SPF is not available in Sephora in Canada because of the FDCA regulations (I’ve been… in search of it). Just thought you should know.
Hi Caitlyn, you’re right – I will update this. Canadians can still order it online through Sephora.com. Hopefully Health Canada will get their act together and approve it soon! Had to include as word on the street is that it’s INCREDIBLE.
Great post! another one I’m dying to try, but not available in canada yet is the Skinceuticals Sheer Physical Defense SPF 50. Apparently it’s going to be in Canada next year:

Ooh that Skinceuticals one looks intriguing! And yes the Josie Maran one IS incroyable.
Ah Skinceuticals… be still my beating heart. They make great serums and one of my fave face masks (the B5 Hydrating mask), so I have no doubt the sunscreen will be equally awesome.
I have to be very careful when I’m in the sun, so this list is fantastic! Thanks so much!
Quick question about application: do you use sunscreen in place of a moisturizer, or overtop? My skin is prone to oily patches so I never know what to do with it.
Does the Pure+simple – All Natural SPF 30 – Oily/Impure feel sticky at all?
@Gimped – The process is moisturizer first, then sunscreen. BUT if you have oily patches you might be able to skip moisturizer – I usually do. Or you could just apply the moisturizer only on the dry spots. If you can, just give it 5-10 minutes to sink in before you put the sunscreen on.
@Angela – no it doesn’t! I find it absorbs in really well…feels like a regular lotion. Not greasy/sticky at all.
Thanks, Michelle! I think I’m gonna grab the Pure and Simple stuff next week
Just a quick FYI …
I’ve tried the Clinique Super City Block (40 SPF)

… and it works great, but my face looks so greasy. I don’t highly recommend it, but if you have to be careful in the sun like I do you might want to check it out. At the time I purchased it a few years ago sunscreens for the face had very low SPF, so this was really my only option. I’m hoping the Pure + Simple one is a great alternative.
that picture makes my face hurt…i’m a daily sunscreen devotee. no burns here!
