Finally we have a West Coast babe in my Babe in the Biz series! Vancouver-based Erica Lam is the founder and editor of The Style Spy, a shopping site geared toward fashion and beauty finds in Vancouver, Toronto and beyond.
I met Erica at a bloggy event in Toronto last summer, long before I started doing these weekly profiles. But even then, I made a mental note that I had to track her down at some point—she’s just so darn put together! (And look at that hair and those lashes!)
Of course, her beauty picks in today’s Q&A do not disappoint! Read on…
Beauty Insider Credentials I’m the editor-in-chief of TheStyleSpy.com and a monthly contributor to the Vancouver Sun. I cover beauty products and services on both the site and for the paper.
Top Five Beauty Products
A 20 minute paper mask that gives me a salon-like facial, minus the cost and time. Paper masks are huge in Asia and are great for traveling.
A gorgeous coral lipstick topped off with this creamy pink gloss. I was asked if I got my lips “done” when I wore this combination cause my lips looked so voluptuous! No, they’re natural!
I have an oily T-zone. I’ve been using these nifty papers for years. A few quick wipes and I’m shine-free.
I line my eyes with a small, angled brush (the M.A.C #266) and this gel liner. It really makes my eyes pop. Gel liners are easier for me to apply than liquid liners and pencils.
Beauty Splurge Semi-permanent lash extensions. Lashes are my guilty pleasure. I love how natural semi-permanent lashes look. However, I can’t always splurge, so when I don’t have extensions, an eyelash curler and mascara will have to do.
Beauty Bargain I believe you can scrimp on mascara, especially since you need to replace them so often. Right now I’m using CoverGirl LashBlast Length Water Resistant Mascara.
First Fragrance Lancôme’s Trésor.
Current Fragrance Juliette Has a Gun, Miss Charming. It’s girly; a mix of moroccan rose, musk and wild berries.
Weird Beauty Habit I’m a big fan of the aspirin mask. I take a few aspirins, crush them into fine powder, mix with a bit of Cetaphil cleanser and apply to my face. It can be a little messy, but it’s a great do-it-yourself mask.
Biggest Beauty Fail I once used drugstore cluster lashes. I don’t have the most steady hand, so they were poorly applied. I dropped by Wink Beauty Lounge (where I get my semi-permanent lashes in Vancouver) to buy some nail polish, and my lash lady Vivian saw me with the clusters. She immediately sat me down, took a “before” picture, took off the clusters, applied her semi-permanent lash extensions and then took an “after” picture. You know you’ve failed when someone needs to do a before and after picture!
Beauty Pet Peeve Chipped nails. It’s not like I’ve never been caught with chipped nails, but I do find them rather unsightly. A quick polish change doesn’t take too long.
Best Beauty Tip Eyeshadow primer. I’m using Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion. I have oily lids, so my liner and shadow used to crease and smudge by the end of the day. This primer keeps it all intact!
Career Advice Hard work and dedication pays off. For every glamorous hour, there are ten un-glamorous ones! It’s also important to be humble. I’m still very flattered when people say they read my site and have any idea who I am.
Love it Erica!
