Patricia Field (yes, THAT Patricia Field) wants you to help Ban the Bland—and win a trip to New York Fashion Week!

U by Kotex contest

SPONSORED I’m not sure when it was decided that all feminine protection products should come in shades of pastel pink, yellow or blue. It’s boring, institutional and, well, it ain’t foolin’ anybody when your maxipad accidentally falls out of your purse. And that’s just the outer packaging, mind you. Have the inside contents ever been anything but plain white? Non.

But now we’ve got a chance to change all that, thanks to an exciting new collab between U by Kotex and fashion visionary Patricia Field. (You know, the Academy Award-nominated, two-time Emmy Award-winning stylist whose fashion career spans 45 years and who is best known for her work on Sex and the City, Ugly Betty and The Devil Wears Prada. Um, wowza!) Patricia and U by Kotex have teamed up to revolutionize the feminine care industry—to “Ban the Bland” so to speak—and are introducing multiple colours and a variety of designs on U by Kotex pads and liners for the first time ever.

AS IF THAT WEREN’T EXCITING ENOUGH: Patricia and U by Kotex and are inviting YOU to submit your inspirations through an online design contest. The winners will have the chance to work with her to inspire the design of a feminine care-related item/accessory that may be sold at retail AND attend a runway show at Fashion Week in New York City in September. How fashionating!

TO ENTER: Design and submit a pad, accessory or inspiration board at before June 29th. (Only one submission in each category will be judged.)

Online voting is open to the public between August 1st and 24th; for everyone who submits or likes a design online, $1 will go to Girls For A Change, a non-profit organization that empowers girls to create and lead social change within their communities.

To enter, head over to now.

No purchase necessary. Contest open only to legal residents of the 50 US/DC & Canada, 14 or older. Parental consent req’d if entrant is a minor. Entries must be rec’d by 11:59:59 PM ET 6/29/11. Total approx. retail value of each Grand Prize: $3,565 (U.S. Dollars). One Grand Prize winner per design category. Judging will be based on Creativity of design – 40%, The extent to which the design embodies the U by Kotex* brand characteristics of “Bold” and “Expressive” – 40% and Appropriateness of statement to design – 20%. Void where prohibited. For Rules/to enter, visit Kimberly-Clark Global Sales, LLC, 2100 Winchester Road, Neenah, WI 54956 USA. Worldwide, Inc. ©2011 KCWW

Maybe I’m just a little freaky, but concerns have already been raised regarding the bleach used to whiten tampons and pads in the past (no worries, that’s not the case anymore apparently! phew!), so that makes me wonder about colors.. I’d be curious to know what kinds of coloring agents they use to color those trendy tampons bright fluo colors, and how it impacts their biodegradability. Really, if there’s a place where I do NOT wanna have chemically colored stuff, it’s down there…

I hate to be a naysayer, but…. why are we fancy-designing something to be aesthetically pleasing when the very point of it is to be concealed and get soiled up with, um, “unmentionables?”

Wow, now I feel obligated to say something nice. Ok. The U by Kotex line is actually pretty good. I was pleasantly surprised on the day they ran out of my usual brand.
