Chloe Fall 2011 - lashes

Forget Amex—MASCARA is the one thing I never leave home without! As I told you guys before, my lashes are suuuuper sparse, very light and incredibly short. So while I have a fondness for all beauty prodz—from lip gloss to bronzer—mascaras are easily my fave. Just like Michelle’s concealer wardrobe, I have a drawer full of ‘em (product junkie that I am), and one for every purpose: going to the gym, chilling on the weekend, dinner with the boy, nights out with the girls, yoga class, the office…. You get the picture. And while I love glamming it up with a false lash effect (I’m obsessed with blackest black, lengthening, thickening formulas), I also like to keep it natural—that’s where my mascara drawer comes in.

Now I’ve got a few more to add to the rotation because just for you guys, I test-drove six of the newest launches. So whether you’re like me and have a mascara to suit every occasion, or you prefer to rock a single signature look, I’m happy to report that there’s something for everyone here. Yay! Let’s dig in, shall we?

FABULOUS FALL MASCARAS: THE LOWDOWN

Benefit Theyre Real mascara review Looking for the perfect mascara? Read here first: I gave 6 newbies a test drive (its a tough job, but someones gotta do it)THE PRODUCT: Benefit They’re Real! Mascara
THE PROMISE: It lengthens, curls, volumizes, lifts and separates with a long-wearing, smudge-proof, jet-black formula.
THE TEST-DRIVE: I loved the dark pigment of this one, and found that it really thickened and lengthened as promised. The brush (it’s fab!) was great at picking up my smallest lashes, too.
THE VERDICT: This product is perfect for all occasions—but especially to create the look I love: the false lash effect. You can easily build up the number of coats to create the look you desire.
BUY IT: Available at Sephora, Shoppers Drug Mart and Murale for $29.

revlon grow luscious Looking for the perfect mascara? Read here first: I gave 6 newbies a test drive (its a tough job, but someones gotta do it)THE PRODUCT: Revlon Grow Luscious Plumping Waterproof Mascara
THE PROMISE: It helps lashes grow stronger and “plumper” while adding length and volume with its oversized brush.
THE TEST-DRIVE: I haven’t been using this long enough to notice whether my lashes have grown stronger, but I’ve got my fingers crossed! I liked how the big brush fattened up my lashes, although it was a little tricky to get to smaller lashes at the inner corners. The formula is more dry than I typically like, but the fact that it’s waterproof meant it didn’t smudge.
THE VERDICT: It definitely lengthens and thickens, and the growth formula is worth a shot!
BUY IT: Available at Well.ca for $8.99. Free shipping in Canada with no minimum order!

rimmel Looking for the perfect mascara? Read here first: I gave 6 newbies a test drive (its a tough job, but someones gotta do it)THE PRODUCT: Rimmel London Volume Accelerator Mascara
THE PROMISE: It strengthens and enhances the look of your lashes over time with a volume-boosting complex. After 30 days, bare lashes will look fuller and denser.
THE TEST-DRIVE: This one added length and applied evenly, but (sad face) I haven’t noticed the crazy volume like it promised. Still, it was a great everyday mascara for the office (and after three or four coats, perfect for dinner dates with cute boys). I’m looking forward to seeing my results after 30 days.
THE VERDICT: It gives good coverage for a basic lash look, but if you want to build it up, you may need an eyelash comb to prevent clumpiness.
BUY IT:  Available at select drug and mass retailers for $9.99.

maybelling great lash Looking for the perfect mascara? Read here first: I gave 6 newbies a test drive (its a tough job, but someones gotta do it)

THE PRODUCT: Maybelline New York Great Lash Lots of Lashes Mascara
THE PROMISE: To celebrate Great Lash’s 40-year anniversary (wow!), Maybelline New York created a new heart-shaped brush to help create the look of more lashes. The applicator multiplies and builds, coating lashes evenly for a clean, full lash look from root to tip.
THE TEST-DRIVE: I used the original Great Lash formula back in high school, so it was great to try it out again. The tip of the brush was fab at reaching all my baby lashes, and the base created thickness in my longer ones.
THE VERDICT: This is a wet formula that goes on clean and lengthens and separates really well. The new brush coats each and every lash! An everyday staple.
BUY IT: Available at drugstores and mass retailers for $6.49.

covergirl natureluxe mousse mascara mobile wallpaper Looking for the perfect mascara? Read here first: I gave 6 newbies a test drive (its a tough job, but someones gotta do it)THE PRODUCT: CoverGirl NatureLuxe Mousse Mascara
THE PROMISE: The secret of this weightless formula is the removal of a synthetic ingredient that weighs lashes down; it’s been replaced with lighter-feeling alternatives (like beeswax) that leave lashes light and lifted.
THE TEST-DRIVE: My lashes felt light, clean, natural and clump-free, even after more than one coat.
THE VERDICT: A perfect option for a natural daytime look at the gym or the office.
BUY IT: Available at Well.ca for $9.39. Free shipping in Canada with no minimum order!

almay Looking for the perfect mascara? Read here first: I gave 6 newbies a test drive (its a tough job, but someones gotta do it)THE PRODUCT: Almay One Coat Get Up & Grow Waterproof Mascara
THE PROMISE: The soft-touch brush reaches every lash in just one coat, while the super-gentle pro-vitamin formula reduces breakage so lashes become longer and stronger over time.
THE TEST-DRIVE: As with the Revlon mascara, I haven’t used this long enough to notice any lash growth, but I liked the formula and the brush. It gave me medium coverage in just one coat and without any clumps.
THE VERDICT: This is a safe option for contact lens wearers and those with sensitive eyes. It’s also fantastic if you want thickness but can’t be bothered fighting clumps with a lash comb or applying multiple coats.
BUY IT: Available at Well.ca for $7.49. Free shipping in Canada with no minimum order!

I tried the very first one you listed, the Benefit one. I gave it about a week and all I found was that it made my lashes EXTREMELY clumpy. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I always have this problem with mascaras. That’s the number one reason why I return them. Anyway, I also found that it made them stubby. Maybe I got a bad batch? I’m not sure.

Oh no! That’s so weird, cause I had the opposite results. Hmm, do you use an eyelash comb? How many coats are you using?

I have one, but it’s pretty crappy, so I suppose I have to invest in one. Can you recommend one? And I used two coats.

I use a pretty basic one from Shoppers, but I’ve heard great things about the Tweezerman comb! Maybe Michelle can give some other reccs?

I have the Benefit mascara as well and loved it – specifically because it didn’t clump. So strange! For lash combs I don’t really have a preference… I think mine is just EcoTools which you can buy at Walmart.

In my opinion, Esteé Lauder makes the best mascaras. I own 2 different ones and I love both of them.

I’ve never tried Estee Lauder mascaras, but will put ‘em on my list! Which ones do you have?

Oh that’s interesting – I don’t think I’ve tried many EL mascaras. I always say that about Lancome, that they make the best ones. (Although you do usually need a lash comb.)

I’ve tried the Lash Accelerator from Rimmel and I must say, at first I found the formula kind of wet for my taste…. But it *ahem* grew on me, and after a month of using it every day, I noticed a significant change in the fullness of my natural lashes. I went to my Mum’s for dinner one night and she actually asked me if I was wearing falsies. I was so pleased. :)

Also, I noticed they’re selling JUST the serum for the same price as the mascara.

Hello! Haven’t commented before, but I love your site…srsly, I was referencing it the other day while in Sephora trying to find that CARGO orange-red lipstick. Right on. Anyway, I received Blinc’s mascara in my Birchbox and was curious if you’ve ever tried it? Apparently its supposed to form tubes around each individual lash, instead of coating them? I haven’t tried it yet….just wondering was your take on that was :)

Hey Erica! I haven’t had the chance to try Blinc’s mascara, or any of the ones that form tubes around lashes, but am totally intrigued! I’m sure Michelle can offer some insight though!

You mean Kiss Me mascara, right? It’s absolutely one of my favourites – I don’t think it gives crazy volume or length but it will never smear or smudge so is great for days when you need longevity. (Plus it doesn’t clump like many waterproof formulas can.) Removing the tubes is also a lot easier than regular mascara. Kiss Me isn’t the only brand who makes a tube formula – Maybelline and Estee have them as well.

That’s so amazing Avee!! I’m on Latisse right now but it’s so cool that you can get results from over-the-counter prodz as well.

Hey Erica!

Thanks for the reviews! I just want to add that if anyone if looking to buy Lancome’s new Hypnose Doll Lashes mascara, GO FOR IT! I’ve been a lashblast girl for a long time, but after receiving Doll Lashes, I am obsessed!!! The trick is to apply mascara with the tip of the applicator to the roots of your lashes first and then using the brush as a whole to brush/even out the product. It is amazing!
Hope this helps, just thought of sharing my new love with y’all!

I definitely need to check out some new false lashes. I never can seem to put them on straight though – and the glue goes everywhere..!

I’m always skeptical about brands that claim to help you grow thicker/longer/fuller lashes, ever since I switched from a continuous cycle of waterproof formulas to Clinique’s lash doubling mascara. I think it was just the thinner/gentler formula that removed easier, and I wasn’t scrubbing my lashes away so to speak. After a month I noticed my lashes were thicker and longer too, and I don’t attribute that to the formula. I received a sample of MUFE’s smokey lash, and I loved the look of that one, although it flaked a bit after 8 – 10 hrs.

Interesting! I think we definitely can be too rough on our lashes sometimes, but that’s amazing that you experienced such a noticeable difference when you switched from waterproof formulas!

For super bad girl, sexy lashes try MAC false lash. Makes lashes super fat and thick. I get compliments like crazy when I use it.

All-time favorite mascara = Full ‘N Soft from Maybelline. I have it in black, brown, waterproof and regular, and I have no need for any other mascaras. Ever. Yeah, I love it that much.

Is that Lindsay Lohan?? If so, she looks very good.

Back on topic. I have very long yet thin eyelashes. I read your other article and will try the tips (powder/coating both sides etc.)

I just stumbled across your blog and I’m OBSESSED. I can’t get enough. Is there a place where I can subscribe?

Oh, I forgot…duh…I’ve tried (out of these) Maybelline. It’s been awhile but it was decent. I’ve recently fallen onto the DS craze mostly due to MUA and I have to say, wet n’ wild Mega Wink is my fave right now. Go figure. Prior to that I used almay one coat. I like natural mascara looks, read: the Anti-Kardashian, and they both give me color and some depth since i have blonde eyelashes.

Dior makes great mascaras if I go HE. Never tried the others you have here. Maybe I will…
