So ELLE had an event, and all kinds of (mostly A-list) celebs showed up—including my new beauty crush Elizabeth Olsen

Elizabeth Olsen - ELLE Women in Hollywood Tribute 2011

We all know awards season in Hollywood runs January through March—but is it really realistic to expect celebs to go the rest of the year without celebrating themselves? Of course not, which is why ELLE magazine is only too happy to accommodate with its annual Women in Hollywood tribute in L.A. They’ve been doing this event for 18 years, apparently, and it’s a nice little bridge to get us through until the People’s Choice Awards roll around in early ’12.

If Fashion Week isn’t really your thing and you’ve been hankering for a good celebrity beauty-fest, then you’ll want to dive into this one. It was pretty much all A-list, and even brought out a few faces—Freida Pinto, Katherine Heigl, Naomi Watts—that we really don’t get to see that often. (Some may argue that in the case of Katherine Heigl, that’s a good thing. But I digress.) Anyway, mostly I would like to pay my own tribute to Elizabeth Olsen, who I think has replaced Olivia Wilde, and maybe even Emma Stone before her (!), as the new object of my beauty affection. But let’s take a look at everyone’s hair and makeup choices…

Whoa, Jennifer Aniston’s hair grew out fast!

It seems like it wasn’t that long ago that Jennifer got her hair cut in a lob… but I guess it WAS February. Can hair grow this long in seven months? Maybe, but I have to wonder if extensions aren’t providing just a little bit of help here (see those shorter pieces around her neck?). I’m also detecting a mild case of the Eagle, and would really like to urge Jen to ease up on the tanning. I know “golden California blonde” is her raison d’être, but as we stare down the barrel of 2012, I’m growing a bit weary of that particular look. It’s a little too 2005.

I like Reese Witherspoon’s hair here.

I’m a Reese fan—what can I say? I know not all of you are, and that’s okay, I get it. But I kind of dig her particular brand of quirky beauty. Yes, even the pointy chin. I really like how she’s wearing her hair here—it’s actually the exact same style as Jennifer’s, but somehow looks more modern with the solid non-streaky colour. She’s also not afraid to rock the pale, and the minimal makeup is a wise move that keeps her looking fresh-faced and youthful. Love the green earrings too!

Naomi Watts is so pretty. The End.

Okay, it’s not really the end—keep reading!—but I don’t think I have much more to comment on in respect to Naomi Watts. The girl is gorgeous, in that delicate natural blonde way. (Us bottle blondes are hella jellis.) I especially like her hair here, even if it has a bit more layering than I’d normally advise. (It works here because it’s been styled properly, but my beef is that layering can be brutal on hair this fine when worn straight.)

What is UP with Evan Rachel Wood’s makeup (and hair)?

Seriously, someone needs to answer this for me. I think the makeup bothers me more than the hair here, although both are problematic. But I’ve noticed this thing with ERW—her makeup always seems a tad too overdone, and it’s terribly aging. Look at the eye makeup. Look at the lips. Is all of that really necessary? She’d look a lot fresher if she went as minimalist as Reese or Naomi. And the hair has waaaay too much product in it; it looks greasy.

Nicole Richie wins the prize for best bangs.

Aren’t they amazing? Of course I’d have to see this pic in the middle of a particularly challenging stage of my own bang-growth attempts. It just makes me want to cut mine. I love the way they’re angled on the sides, and they’re the perfect counterpart to that slight bump at the crown. PS: Aren’t her eyes a pretty colour? I never noticed before.

Freida Pinto, annoyingly, requires zero effort for the red carpet.

You want to hate her. It probably took 10 minutes to get ready but she still looks incredible. Simple hair, simple makeup—just gorgeous skin, a hint of blush and gloss and lining the waterlines of the eyes with a dark pencil. If only it was this easy for the rest of us.

Camila Alves is not as sexy as usual here.

Camila Alves ELLE Women in Hollywood Tribute 2011 So ELLE had an event, and all kinds of (mostly A list) celebs showed up—including my new beauty crush Elizabeth Olsen

Not that she needs to look sexy all of the time, but it’s kind of what the public expects from Camila, right? I just feel like she had a bit of a style crisis with this look—I really never thought I’d see her wear polka dots of all things. And I don’t think they go with the earrings or the hair. Not that it matters that much when you win the genetic lottery, of course. Her full brows and lips are all kinds of amazing.

Katherine Heigl is still looking a bit old lady-ish.

Katherine Heigl ELLE Women in Hollywood Tribute 2011 So ELLE had an event, and all kinds of (mostly A list) celebs showed up—including my new beauty crush Elizabeth Olsen

I don’t know what it is, exactly. The haircut itself? Or the way she styles it? Or is it those earrings and the neckline of her dress (complete with beige bra strap hanging out)? There’s just something about Katherine that screams for a stylist, because you have to admit she’s wasting the pretty. Her acting career (and personality!) aside, I do think she’s one of the most attractive women in Hollywood. Mainly it’s her smile. I’m kind of obsessed with the rounded shape of her teeth.

Is Amber Heard looking Goth or glam here?

Amber Heard ELLE Women in Hollywood Tribute 2011 So ELLE had an event, and all kinds of (mostly A list) celebs showed up—including my new beauty crush Elizabeth Olsen

I’m going to say glam—even though that lip colour is almost too dark and her skin is looking dangerously pale. Somehow, it’s working for me. And I totally dig the hair, which is nodding to the retro trend but still looking soft and touchable. The little highlights at the inner corners of her eyes are a great finishing touch.

I think Elizabeth Olsen is totally adorable, but…

I just realized why she does that thing with her mouth. You know, the pursed lips in the pic at the top of this post. All the Olsens do it, and so does Snooki, and I kinda find it annoying because why not just SMILE? But now, if you look at this photo, you can see why. Call me picky after all of my dental work, but someone has a bit of an overbite problem. Just saying. Not that it bothers me all that much because the rest of her is so fabulous. It might even be kind of endearing. I love the hair (sort of Ombré, but not in your face), the brows, the smokified eye makeup.

Now, over to you guys:

Which celebs rocked your favourite beauty looks here?
Who is bothering you the most?
Do you think Elizabeth Olsen will be an even bigger deal than her sisters?

Evan Rachel Wood’s look is a bit upsetting – I agree. Something is going on with her eyelashes. They look photoshopped.

They do! A perfect example of why I prefer Latisse to false lashes. (See: Kardashians also)

Re: Katherine H. – yes to the Hilary Clinton comparison! Oh gosh, she is so gorgeous I too don’t know why she styles herself (does she?) older. It may be her old Hollywood features….
As for ERW, I think she is an example of someone who clearly loves to play with makeup but is missing the purpose. I love the chopped hair, a statement since she came out as bi-sexual I think, but the greasiness is too runway theatrical vs. red carpet.(which show was that Michelle?) As for Elizath Olsen – super super pretty. Looking way more “fresh” than he sisters, which I admire. Her eye makeup is smoky perfection. How to achieve on round eyes and a dominant (but nice) nose?

I think EO’s eye makeup would look good on anyone! I don’t know if I could ever get that precise with the waterlining though – whoever did it did an amazing job. I also love how the shadow is all the way around the eye too, all softly blended. Definitely one of the best makeup jobs I’ve seen in a while!

PS – I think Camila is sporting a bit of the eagle herself btw.

Katherine H’s hair kills me. I will never understand why she insists on styling it like that! What ever happened to the red carpet Katherine of a few years ago who constantly looked fabulous? It’s almost as if her big bitch meltdown turned her into the wicked witch lookswise too. Otherwise, there’s something about ERW that I’ve always liked but this new look of hers is not doing it for me. I dislike the hair, sure it’s cute but it doesn’t work for me. I actually adore Nicole Richie’s sense of style, I think she generally looks great. As for Camilla, could you have found a more unflattering picture? I don’t think I’ve ever seen her looking so… meh. Maybe she just looks drunk or stoned. Amber Heard is really riding the border between goth and glam there but I think the eye makeup saves her. That little highlight on the inner corner takes it out of goth territory. As for Elizabeth Olson, she is quite pretty but I don’t think she’ll replace Emma Stone for me! I hate that pursed lips thing she’s doing. It’s so Olson sisters and so forced. I love the color of her eyes though!

It’s karma for sure in the case of Katherine H. And good point about Camila – maybe she’s been dipping into some of her husband’s stash?? I really hope Amber Heard becomes more famous… she definitely has potential.

Jen, Jen, Jen, you must have the most boring photo styleline of any chick in hollywood. We get it you found your look, but tweak it a bit, let it grow so it evolves and you don’t look ridiculous at 55. I agree Michelle, those short pieces are the giveaway she’s got extensions in but I’d bet money they’re just clip-ins for the evening. She’s spoken publicly about how much they ruined her natural hair. I like Reese too and I love the single color but it’s a touch too white for me.
I think ERW’s problem in addition to her hair and makeup always being overdone they’re always over 1980′s looking.
Katherine Heigle looks a H.A.M.

I agree with you about Jen A. – I feel like her look just isn’t going to age well. I would love to see her with something more chic and straight, and solid colour honey blonde instead of that tousled streaky California look. It makes her look like she’s trying too hard (which she probably is).

Hard to believe Jen is actually younger than Naomi!!

I dunno, I think on Olsen, that face is cute. But I think it’s her cuteness that is reminding me of this emoticon :3 so it’s adorable.

Evan Rachel Wood would look a million times better with dark hair… I really don’t like her blonde hair! I think she would look so much more snow white!

Also, Amber Heard is HOT. Enough said.

Oh dear. Evan Rachel Wood looks like she is trying to get into Wilson Philips. And Jen….sorry but this photo has inspired me to get rid of my last lingering long layers and to put away my self tanner. Unless she is guest starring in Cougartown this look is DONE. Reese is freakin’ radiant. Those earrings! Love. And Katherine Heigl reminds me of my mother with a perm, circa 1983.
