There's so much going on in beauty these days that it's hard to keep up! Do you ever feel completely, totally overwhelmed when you step inside a Sephora or a Shoppers Drug Mart? I know I do—even though it's kinda sorta my job to keep track of the dozens of cool-looking products hitting shelves every month. The always insightful BritishBeautyBlogger wrote a post recently called "Beauty Fatigue" that really hit home for me. It (and the comments) are a must-read for industry types, but I think what she's saying is relevant for anyone with an interest in beauty these days: "I have never known a time when there were so many new products flooding onto the market or new launches, beauty presentations or ‘scientific findings’. [...] I’m quite often asked what drives me to feature a product and it’s almost impossible to say. It used to be amazing packaging, innovative concepts, value for money and beautiful colours. Now, I’m surrounded by all of things all of the time."
Eeks! It's SO true. And that doesn't even take into account all of the celebrity beauty news, the mind-blowing tricks I pick up from interviewing hairdressers and makeup artists, and so on. THERE IS SO MUCH I WANT TO TALK ABOUT WITH YOU GUYS! And that's why I'm gonna try something new today with a little Friday round-up of beauty tidbits—you know, a post dedicated to all the neat stuff that's been going on in my world (and that I need to share before next week's round of discoveries steals my attention). Come and dive in!
... Editor's Picks vids will return
First a little bit 'o housekeeping. A few of you guys have been asking what happened to the weekly beauty review videos and I promise I'll get back in the saddle soon (although maybe not on a weekly basis—see "beauty fatigue" above). They're currently on hiatus while we put the final finishing touches on our big makeover. That's right—quite soon you're going to be seeing a (much prettier) BEAUTYEDITOR.ca 2.0, with not just a blog but a bunch of exciting new features like celebrity photo galleries, Q&As and how-tos and product listings. Stay tuned, it's going to be great (if we don't say so ourselves)!
... What do you think of Lauren Conrad's "My Little Pony" hair?
So we talked about the whole dip-dye trend a while back... and now it appears that LC has traded in her blue for PEACH. I thought this trend was going to be over pretty quickly, but now I'm thinking it has legs. If you recall, we saw orangey highlights at Peter Som's S/S '12 show. And I just talked to a celeb hairstylist a couple of days ago, and he reiterated that unusual colours are becoming a Big Deal. Pinks, peaches, lavenders—apparently the thing is to experiment with those instead of your cut these days. I do agree that the reason it looks kinda pretty on Lauren is because she has such gorgeous long hair to begin with.
... Lindsay Lohan's blush is a #majorbeautyfail
Just when you thought Lilo's beauty sense couldn't get any worse. The terrible hair (extensions, colour, everything), the terrible fake tan, the terrible Juvie addiction... now, add terrible blush to the list. When I talked up contouring in this vid, I didn't mean that you should do it this way. Someone needs to take her to court for THIS CRIME.
... Apparently this will make your hair grow faster and stronger (sign me up!)
I was in NYC last week and as usual, the day after I returned I discovered a new and exciting beauty product that I should have bought when I was down there. (Isn't that always the way?) I read about the dietary supplement Viviscal on Allure.com—apparently it's the celebrity secret weapon for making your hair grow faster (and stronger and healthier). The quote that got me? "It's not an overnight fix, but all of a sudden, three months later, your hair has grown two inches instead of one." YES PLEASE. I got my colour done on Wednesday and asked my colourist about it—he said it does work, but that you can also try salmon oil (to ingest, not apply—ew). Pro tip! I still want to get my hands on Viviscal though...
... Beautylicious is coming to Toronto!
If you live in Toronto, you may be familiar with Beautylicious, which is like Winterlicious and Summerlicious, except for beauty—not food. What happens is a bunch of Yorkville-area salons, spas and other beauty providers get together and offer their usual services for a steal... so it's a great opportunity to pamper yourself on the cheap OR to try something new that you're curious about. I got an early-bird test-drive of a couple of services. Pure + Simple do a gorgeous organic facial with a killer scalp massage, so I did that—my only complaint was that it was only 30 minutes and I wish it was 90. Then, yesterday I got an absolutely incredible tag team treatment at Holt Renfrew: a Shellac manicure (I went for short-ish, rounded, blood red) followed by a bouncy blow-dry.
And listen to this: you know your blowout is awesome when you get stopped by multiple guys on the street on your walk home. (Truth!) The promotions run October 27 through November 6, so check out the website for deets.
... Don't expect to feel good about yourself after having brunch with Victoria's Secret supermodels
Victoria's Secret Angels Candice Swanepoel and Alessandra Ambrosio were in town this week for a media event (it was also Candice's 23rd birthday, hence the candle in the cupcake at the top of this post). God, these ladies are ridiculously beautiful in person—not like runway models, where you want to hand them a cheeseburger. It was like Doutzen Kroes all over again. Anyway, I snapped this adorbs pic of my former editor in a Victoria's Secret sandwich. (What—you think I'm going to pose with them myself?! Oh, I learned that lesson with Coco Rocha).
... And oh yeah, this was Fashion Week in Toronto!
Nicole was on the scene, so more news from backstage to come!
