This week in beauty: LC goes peach, I get Beautylicious and the Victoria’s Secret Angels give my self-esteem a blow…

Candice Swanepoel and Alessandra Ambrosio in Toronto

There’s so much going on in beauty these days that it’s hard to keep up! Do you ever feel completely, totally overwhelmed when you step inside a Sephora or a Shoppers Drug Mart? I know I do—even though it’s kinda sorta my job to keep track of the dozens of cool-looking products hitting shelves every month. The always insightful BritishBeautyBlogger wrote a post recently called “Beauty Fatigue” that really hit home for me. It (and the comments) are a must-read for industry types, but I think what she’s saying is relevant for anyone with an interest in beauty these days: “I have never known a time when there were so many new products flooding onto the market or new launches, beauty presentations or ‘scientific findings’. [...] I’m quite often asked what drives me to feature a product and it’s almost impossible to say. It used to be amazing packaging, innovative concepts, value for money and beautiful colours. Now, I’m surrounded by all of things all of the time.”

Eeks! It’s SO true. And that doesn’t even take into account all of the celebrity beauty news, the mind-blowing tricks I pick up from interviewing hairdressers and makeup artists, and so on. THERE IS SO MUCH I WANT TO TALK ABOUT WITH YOU GUYS! And that’s why I’m gonna try something new today with a little Friday round-up of beauty tidbits—you know, a post dedicated to all the neat stuff that’s been going on in my world (and that I need to share before next week’s round of discoveries steals my attention). Come and dive in!

… Editor’s Picks vids will return

First a little bit ‘o housekeeping. A few of you guys have been asking what happened to the weekly beauty review videos and I promise I’ll get back in the saddle soon (although maybe not on a weekly basis—see “beauty fatigue” above). They’re currently on hiatus while we put the final finishing touches on our big makeover. That’s right—quite soon you’re going to be seeing a (much prettier) 2.0, with not just a blog but a bunch of exciting new features like celebrity photo galleries, Q&As and how-tos and product listings. Stay tuned, it’s going to be great (if we don’t say so ourselves)!

… What do you think of Lauren Conrad’s “My Little Pony” hair?

So we talked about the whole dip-dye trend a while back… and now it appears that LC has traded in her blue for PEACH. I thought this trend was going to be over pretty quickly, but now I’m thinking it has legs. If you recall, we saw orangey highlights at Peter Som’s S/S ’12 show. And I just talked to a celeb hairstylist a couple of days ago, and he reiterated that unusual colours are becoming a Big Deal. Pinks, peaches, lavenders—apparently the thing is to experiment with those instead of your cut these days. I do agree that the reason it looks kinda pretty on Lauren is because she has such gorgeous long hair to begin with.

… Lindsay Lohan’s blush is a #majorbeautyfail

Lindsay Lohan blush This week in beauty: LC goes peach, I get Beautylicious and the Victorias Secret Angels give my self esteem a blow...

Just when you thought Lilo’s beauty sense couldn’t get any worse. The terrible hair (extensions, colour, everything), the terrible fake tan, the terrible Juvie addiction… now, add terrible blush to the list. When I talked up contouring in this vid, I didn’t mean that you should do it this way. Someone needs to take her to court for THIS CRIME.

… Apparently this will make your hair grow faster and stronger (sign me up!)

Viviscal This week in beauty: LC goes peach, I get Beautylicious and the Victorias Secret Angels give my self esteem a blow...

I was in NYC last week and as usual, the day after I returned I discovered a new and exciting beauty product that I should have bought when I was down there. (Isn’t that always the way?) I read about the dietary supplement Viviscal on—apparently it’s the celebrity secret weapon for making your hair grow faster (and stronger and healthier). The quote that got me? “It’s not an overnight fix, but all of a sudden, three months later, your hair has grown two inches instead of one.” YES PLEASE. I got my colour done on Wednesday and asked my colourist about it—he said it does work, but that you can also try salmon oil (to ingest, not apply—ew). Pro tip! I still want to get my hands on Viviscal though…

… Beautylicious is coming to Toronto!

If you live in Toronto, you may be familiar with Beautylicious, which is like Winterlicious and Summerlicious, except for beauty—not food. What happens is a bunch of Yorkville-area salons, spas and other beauty providers get together and offer their usual services for a steal… so it’s a great opportunity to pamper yourself on the cheap OR to try something new that you’re curious about. I got an early-bird test-drive of a couple of services. Pure + Simple do a gorgeous organic facial with a killer scalp massage, so I did that—my only complaint was that it was only 30 minutes and I wish it was 90. Then, yesterday I got an absolutely incredible tag team treatment at Holt Renfrew: a Shellac manicure (I went for short-ish, rounded, blood red) followed by a bouncy blow-dry.

And listen to this: you know your blowout is awesome when you get stopped by multiple guys on the street on your walk home. (Truth!) The promotions run October 27 through November 6, so check out the website for deets.

… Don’t expect to feel good about yourself after having brunch with Victoria’s Secret supermodels

David Livingstone with Alessandra Ambrosio and Candice Swanepoel This week in beauty: LC goes peach, I get Beautylicious and the Victorias Secret Angels give my self esteem a blow...

Victoria’s Secret Angels Candice Swanepoel and Alessandra Ambrosio were in town this week for a media event (it was also Candice’s 23rd birthday, hence the candle in the cupcake at the top of this post). God, these ladies are ridiculously beautiful in person—not like runway models, where you want to hand them a cheeseburger. It was like Doutzen Kroes all over again. Anyway, I snapped this adorbs pic of my former editor in a Victoria’s Secret sandwich. (What—you think I’m going to pose with them myself?! Oh, I learned that lesson with Coco Rocha).

… And oh yeah, this was Fashion Week in Toronto!

Nicole was on the scene, so more news from backstage to come!

Tell me:

Do you feel swamped by the sheer number of beauty products, news and tips competing for space in your brain these days?
What do you think of LC’s new hair colour?
Are you intrigued by the hair-growing powers of Viviscal?

Candice Swanepoel is my girl crush. Love that pic of David – he’s posing for the camera too!

You shouldn’t feel bad about yourself just because you’re around supermodels. I mean the average woman looks nothing like that and what you look like is not all that matters anyway. Being confident about who you are makes you more attractive.

Oh don’t mind me – I’m a little over-dramatic but seeing them in person never stops me from going home and eating a cupcake or whatever :-)
And yes it’s so true about confidence. And a SMILE!

Don’t worry, Michelle. I checked a lot of Duane Reades in NYC in August and couldn’t find one box. It’s probably easier just to order it.

I’m a little hesitant to take it because if there’s iodine in it, I’ll breakout. I’ll be interested to know how you do on it!

P.S. I like the peach hair! I think it’s cute.

Oh really? Ok good to know! I actually take iodine separately and it has never given me any skin issues…. I’ll have to check the ingredients list for this though, so thanks for the heads up! I shall report back if I can get my hands on this…

I’d take a gander and say that LiLo wasn’t quite awake when she did her make up and mistakenly thought what she was using as blush was in fact her eyeshadow. Her eye makeup and cheek color look suspiciously the same, don’t you think?

OMG!!!! I sooo agree with Carmela…train wreck!

Yes! Good theory!

I really like LC’s hair. Its nice because she stays with trend, but does not over do it.

Poor Lindsay. She is really pretty but she is also very pale and has to be careful about her make up usage. I hope one day she gets her self on track and lives up to all the potential that she has to offer. Maybe the lighting was just bad??

I wonder if Viviscal is healthy for you to take? I think if we all ate super healthy, had no stress and perfect lives we would have the same success with our hair;-)
I also wonder why some women are blessed with some extreme beauty. Maybe its to tell what kind of character they have and how they will use it.

LiLo makes me sad… could be partially lighting but even still, doesn’t she have someone looking out for her? For all her screw-ups I really feel like she had that certain charisma, that “it” quality – I hope she gets herself back on track but it’s not looking promising.

The Viviscal ingredients look ok to me but yes I think it’s a good idea to always check with your doctor:

I think VS always tries to choose models with big personalities – you could definitely see it with these two, mostly Candice. That’s an interesting theory about character. One of the most attractive women I know is actually not conventionally pretty but lights up a room like you would not believe – her “gift” is that she can make anyone, anywhere, feel comfortable and make them laugh. Of course she has men falling at her feet :-)

LOL at “Don’t Expect to Feel Good about Yourself” & VS models. I feel your pain! I attended an event for Christy Turlington’s incredible film on maternal health, No Woman No Cry, when she came to speak at Belinda Stronach’s awesome Girls20 Summit. Why I thought I should stand next to Christy for a photo is still a mystery to me. Best part? Christy had no make up, hair pulled back in a pony tail, plain sheath dress and flats. Still. Radiant. Sigh.

Haha – aren’t those photos priceless?? It really hammers home that they are Models – I was feeling pretty good about myself when I posed with Coco and then flabbergasted at the contrast between her and me when I got the pics. Shocking! That’s why they make the big bucks…

Lilo looks a bit like the aliens in “Alien Nation” with a bad wig. That is beauty fatigue embodiment.

Michelle, you’re a hot lady – those VS models are beautiful, but c’mon – let’s be realistic, I’d rather drink dark and stormies with you than Candice and Alessandra. You’re too cool for skool

Oh you’re too cute! I’m not cool at all but I will admit to being vain – how can it not get to you after writing about this stuff day in, day out for several years? Oh well, just another day at the office :-)

Monday, October 24/2011 at 4:08 pm

OMG Kharina I totally remember ‘Alien Nation’! I’ll never be able to look at LiLo the same again!

I think LiLo was high when she did her makeup, she just couldn’t tell the difference and used her brown eyeshadow as blush. What a mess.
