Need a perfume pick-me-up? Check out the top summer scents of 2012

Fendi - Spring 2011 sunglasses

Yay! It’s my favourite fragrance post of the year. That’s because I have what you might call an “unsophisticated” nose—which means light, non-complicated summer scents are my absolute faves. (I’ve been known to wear Bobbi Brown Beach in the dead of winter because that Coppertone note does more for my mood than any wintry, serious floral.)

As usual, I’ve spritzed my way through all the newbies that have crossed my desk this season. Most are limited-edition, so go test ‘em out and scoop up your faves before they’re gone!

DVF Sunny Diane

I found the regular DVF scent, Diane, a little too “officey” for my nomad freelance lifestyle. But this? This I could do. The notes are citrus, frangipani, violet and musk. On my skin, it does indeed live up to the name—sunny!—and is a sparkling, sort of lemony yet beachy, happy scent. Like Diane, it’s not going to scream out “NOTICE ME!” but it’s a fantastic, understated, go-anywhere scent.

Demeter Clean Skin

I don’t think I mentioned this yet, but I met with the CEO of Demeter fragrances last month—and MAN was it a fascinating conversation. The line is way more “green” than I thought (95 percent natural actually!), and I have a newfound appreciation for their mission, which is to make scent accessible and enjoyable for people to use everyday, everywhere. Clean Skin is one of their newer launches, and the combo of orange, lemon, white rose, bergamot, peach and vanilla translates into a subtle post-shower smell. You can’t go wrong!

Stella McCartney Summer Rose

Summer Rose is the replacement for Stella Sheer (which I *think* changed slightly every year). And like Sheer, it’s basically a lighter, airier version of the signature rose-heavy scent. If so much rose scares you off, I’d encourage you to give this a whiff—it’s très pretty. There is rose, yes, but it’s tempered by notes of frosted lemon, green apple, peony and amber.

Calvin Klein Eternity Aqua

It wouldn’t be summer without a marine scent to talk about—and CK’s doesn’t disappoint, with notes of apple, peony, apricot, cucumber water, white flowers, magnolia, jasmine, wood and musk. This makes me want to dive into a pool and then sip icy cocktails.

Lise Watier Summer Sunset

It’s always good to have a nighttime summer scent in your arsenal. Mine has always been Miami Glow. (Yeah, by J.Lo. What of it?) Told you I had the taste of a teenager. Anyway, I may just replace it with this—a blend of grapefruit blossoms, bergamot, “red fruit” (whatever that is), jasmine, lily of the valley, honeysuckle, apple, wood and musk. Honestly, it’s really, REALLY nice and is one of my favourites of the bunch. Super sexy!!

Victoria’s Secret Love is Heavenly

Could be because Victoria’s Secret does some Jedi mind-trick to make you think that wearing their fragrance is going to make you also LOOK like a supermodel… but I really like some of their scents. This is the newest, and it’s got notes of mandarin flowers, water lily and musk. So: not complicated, but fresh and yummy. They have a body cream for this too, and the packaging is totally luxe and gorgeous, FYI.

Yves Rocher Monoï L’Eau des Vahinés

Some people find it faintly trashy, but I die for monoï, which is an oil made from soaking the petals of Tahitian gardenias (tiare flowers). Those French Polynesians! So lucky. Surprisingly, Yves Rocher has carved out a bit of a niche market for this note, and while I usually don’t like their other stuff fragrance-wise, I am head-over-heels in love with anything and everything in their Monoï line. This year’s launch features tiare, ylang ylang and vanilla. Could it get any better for me? No, no it could not.

Fruits & Passion Pomelo Granité

Don’t try this fragrance if you are craving a fruity popsicle or something like that, because it will literally make you salivate. But then again, that’s always the way with Fruits & Passion products. The notes here are pomelo (duh), which is a type of citrus fruit, along with fresh mint. You will want to both wear it and drink it.

Tell me:

Have you tried any of these fragrances yet?
What summer scents are YOU wearing this year?
How do you feel about monoï? Rose? Marine scents?

Love Stella’s Summer Rose, but even better, my absolute favorite summertime perfume is Stella’s In Two Peony. Less rosy than the others, but still so light and fresh, I just love it.

I too have an unsophisticated nose. If I could just spritz myself with lemonade everyday I probably would.

I’ve always been kind of fascinated by Demeter. I had to stop myself from buying their cocktail perfumes (Mojito? Gin and Tonic? Yes please) because I didn’t want to smell like an alcoholic. Do you know of anywhere in TO that stocks a lot of their scents? Or is online the best bet?

I have not tried any of these, but if I were to choose one- it would be the Lise Watier Summer Sunet. Who doesn’t want to try something with the ingredient, “red fruit.” –gotta love that.
