CMA Awards ’12: Can we talk about how I want to look like Taylor Swift now?

Taylor Swift - CMA Awards 2012

It’s true. I really, really do.

See, this is why you never say never in beauty. One minute you’re dissing the faux pas du jour (whether it’s a makeup look, hairstyle or even an actual person) and the next, you can’t get enough. Witness what happened to blue eyeshadow: once the most grave of beauty crimes and now it’s the must-have colour to be wearing on your eyelids in 2013. Also, Nicole Richie. Have I told you about how, during the heyday of The Simple Life, my friend and I were going to go to some Halloween party as Paris and Nicole? Except when push came to shove neither of us wanted to be the unfortunate-looking (at the time) Nicole? Yes, I WILLINGLY styled myself as Paris Hilton and THOUGHT I WAS COOL.

So you see, beautyland is full of surprises. Like today, because I want to blab about how much I loved Taylor Swift at the CMA Awards.

This is a big deal if you remember me going on about how she always wears the same, slightly overdone makeup and hair. She was in a long-term beauty rut, if you will.

But now?

Taylor Swift CMA Awards 2012 CMA Awards 12: Can we talk about how I want to look like Taylor Swift now?

I’m not kidding, I want my hair to be this colour and I want to have bangs and soft, very slight waves and red lipstick and black lashes.

Okay, now I know y’all are like WAIT WUT? HER MAKEUP IS NOT EVEN DIFFERENT! And I suppose you’re right. But you see, I think the hair makes all the difference.

It’s not so much about the colour, although you may have noticed that over the years, she’s gone progressively darker to land up at this ever-so-slightly strawberry-ish shade (which still doesn’t scream out “RED HAIR”… like my hair is still doing ever since “The Incident”). From what I can tell, it’s her natural colour, and it’s so much more flattering than being blonderexic.

But really, my new crush on her is more about her hair’s style and texture. Now before you call me an anti-curlite, let me just say that the curls were cute and all… but she just never switched them up! It would be one thing if she did high ponytails or half-up/half-down or a Gwen Stefani-style ‘fro… but all we used to see was either long and loose or in a low bun. That was it.

So to say that I’m excited over this new texture—which is the kind of voluminous straight hair that only curly-haired people can achieve—is an understatement. I mean, I know for a fact that my bangs would never, ever look that thick.

Wanna see a close-up of her makeup?

It’s good, right? That’s a helluva matte red lip right there. And the eye makeup looks more natural than I thought it would. Just a shiz-tonne of mascara and some liner, I reckon. And what’s making the whole thing perfect is that glowy highlight on the cheek. Oh, sure, it could be just the camera flash but let’s pretend it’s a creamy shimmery highlighting cream on top of her blush, ‘kay? If we’re going to make up a story then let’s at least make it a good one.

So yeah… the whole thing is rocking my world right now and you can bet I’m wearing red on my lips today (and bringing these pics to show Tony when I next go to see him).

Now let’s talk about a couple of other peeps who were also lookin’ good. Hayden Panettiere is one of them, and you know I rarely praise her.

So admittedly, the false eyelashes are not so good. Individual ones at the outer edges would’ve been far more natural looking than these fringey things.

But whatevs, I can live with it because the rest of this look is pretty spot-on. Love me a side bun (I am, in fact, sporting one myself right this very minute), and I also love me some glowy skin and pinky blush and nudey lips. It’s good, right?

The other celeb that I think deserves our praise is Lucy Hale:

She’s really got her poses down pat now, have you noticed? This is the absolute best angle to show off the back of that dress and the contrast of her dark hair and red lips against the white. If I wanted to be nit-picky I would say that her curls need some more separating (because brushed-out ones are obviously where it’s at, HELLO) and that there is a very slight Eagle situation happening with her face (light) versus her body (dark).

But like I said, that would be nit-picking and why do that when there are people like Carrie Underwood in this world?

Carrie Underwood CMA Awards 2012 CMA Awards 12: Can we talk about how I want to look like Taylor Swift now?

Oh Jesus, take the wheel.

I only say this because I want to help you, Carrie: please STOP. You are aging yourself by 100 years with this schtick. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: when your dress is this over-the-top sparkly, then you don’t need to pull out 1,000 stops with your hair and makeup as well. Think high-low. Dressy dress, casual face and hair. It’s prettier, it’s sexier… it’s just the way it’s done.

Other points I can’t help but make: her hair does not need to be this blonde and her curls most definitely need separating. She also needs to get over the slimy, porno lip gloss, and whatever the heck is on her eyes that are making them disappear into her head.

Don’t forget to check out the gallery for the full range of celebrity red carpet beauty looks from the night!

Tell me:

Are you head over heels for Taylor as well, or is it just me?
What did you think of Hayden? Of Lucy?
Do you, too, want to run after Carrie with some face wipes?

Agreed! I’ll admit, I just love Taylor in general (even with her country music curly hair of yore) but she has been looking incredible lately. Totally jealous of her ridiculous hair. Her look is much more effortless now, which I think is basically the gold standard (“I don’t even have to try and I look amazing.”)

Michelle Michelle Michelle.. you’re killing me here. Taylor Swift? You need more excitment that in your look!

Not that I don’t think she looks good (she does) but its always the same and this look above IS the same. So boring. I am really not sure about her hair colour at all really. Is there a slight greyish tinge to it? And I really don’t think it is her natural hair colour either- its so long when would she have grown out the platinum?

I love the matte red though- I’m all about the matte red after your great advice on the Olsen twins post a few months back.

Is it just me or does Hayden Panettiere look so good simply because of her smile?! She looks genuinely happy (with amazing blush) so its only natural for her to look good. It’s the best beauty tip of all (well, that and having good teeth..)

This is exactly what I always thought.
I too think her hair is a little on the greyish side. It’s not that obvious in this pic though but most of the time I think it ages her a lot. A sunny golden blonde (maybe with a copper shimmer – because she obviously loves red) would look so great on her.
Plus, all of her hairstyles are really boring. All of them.
And I really want her to ditch the red lipstick, she wears it all the time. On the red carpet, in her videos, for interviews, photo shoots… you name it.
Some color other than black and grey on her eyelids would also be an improvement.
She’s a pretty girl, it’ll suit her.

I agree with you two. This is not her natural color although probably very close to what it is. It’s also new. It’s now a pretty warm as opposed to the ash( you call it grey) blonde it’s been for a while. Much more flattering This is why she all of a sudden looks fresh to Michele. Well that and she stopped over styling it.

I also agree about wearing the red all the time. Not saying it’s not pretty it just doesn’t jive with the all american sweet innocent girl eyes wide O-shaped mouth with a hand covering it schtick she puts on.
It’s just not her authentic self if you ask me. Don’t think she’s found that yet.

I thought the same about the red lipstick but I really like it here with this dress… maybe it’s that the rest of her looks more casual so it works.

I hear you but I don’t think she looks *that* much the same here – the straighter hair and bangs (plus darker colour) make a world of difference! I don’t know, I just really like it! :)

I’m feelin Tay’s look but the hair colour isn’t doin it for me. Reminds me of that post you did on medium tones – it’s too neither-here-nor-there. Love how she makes the red lip look like NBD though.

Going out to buy whatever that skin prod Hayden P advertised because damn that is some clear skin.

Death to slimy porno gloss.

OK, I like Taylor Swift’s look this time. I admit it. I am biased, but that hair colour is one found in nature (namely, on my head), unlike most blondes I’ve seen on-screen. In my dreams, my hair would do that, but good point about the straightened-curly-hair volume etc. I have about, oh, 1/3 that much hair, naturally straight. Do you think extensions are involved? I can’t tell, & I ususally can.

& Help me here; I actually can’t see a real difference between Hayden’s nearly-nude-with-gloss & Carrie’s “slimey porno gloss”. (That’s a phrase that will linger…)

It’s the frost factor. I also think how thick it “appears” has something to do with it.
Super thick and frosty pink lip gloss accentuated by extra dark and extreme eye makeup just screams je ne se sleazy

Thank you! That’s exactly what I mean – even if it’s not natural it def looks like it could be. I don’t think she’s wearing extensions but you never know…

And yes as Denise confirmed I think the difference with the gloss is that Carrie’s is slightly frosty and just looks thick and dated. Plus seems like she’s wearing lip liner? Hayden’s looks more easy breezy like she just threw it on.

Carrie Underwood really does wear WAY too much eye makeup. I think she wears more eye makeup than almost any other celebrity I can think of. It makes me cringe just to think about taking that off at the end of the night.

Yep. Even Kim Kardashian does not wear that much! It’s crazy.

Oh, Carrie. I remember just how effervescent she was way back when on American Idol. She stuck out to me from the beginning because you could tell she was so naturally beautiful from the inside out. I still think she is extremely talented and far more down to earth than the vast majority of celebs out there, but her hair color and make-up are pushing Playboy now.

And I’m loving Hayden and Lucy too. I have always liked Hayden, but I do agree that she has not always hit the right note on the red carpet. However, this night she was clearly on. She just looks so relaxed and natural–totally gorgeous. And given my major girl crush on Lucy, she really can do no wrong in my eyes, but this look is probably (and objectively) one of her best.

I completely disagree with your views about Carrie Underwood. I think she looks gorgeous. Yes, her makeup is a little heavy, but she looks beautiful nonetheless. You criticize her way too much and it’s gotten to the point where it’s irritating. She’s a beautiful woman with and without makeup and I think your words are, quite frankly, rude.

Well I never intended to be rude if that is how you interpreted this post, but if you’ve been reading here for a while then you will know that we regularly talk about celebrity beauty looks – the good and the bad. :) I never said that Carrie wasn’t a beautiful woman – but I stand by my opinion that she would look MUCH more beautiful if she didn’t cover up her good looks with so much makeup. There is just no need.
