The look:
Fairy Dust mani. (By Shelena Robinson for CND.)
The inspiration:
Fairies, of course! Not only did Fairy Dust grace the tips of the models’ nails, but dreamy fairies also felt present in the quirky ballroom of the Meatpacking District’s historic Jane Hotel where the show was held. The collection itself was delicate and nymph-inspired.
The how-to:
1. Apply a base coat.
2. In a small bowl, blend together fine gold and silver glitter. (Here, Robinson used CND Additives in Spectrum Shimmer and Antique Bronze.)
3. Paint one nail at a time with a clear top coat. (Here, it’s CND Air Dry Top Coat.) Cover the entire nail to create the clean, innocent, crystal-clear base.
4. While the top coat is still wet, use an art brush to apply the glitter from halfway up the nail to the tips. This will create a fade-out Ombré effect. Repeat on the rest of your nails.
5. Seal your glitter tips with another layer of top coat.

An easier way to achieve this effect is by dragging the brush loaded with glitter polish *down* the nail, from tip to cuticle, so the bulk of the glitter lies at the top of the nail. A judicious second coat of glitter just along the tips also intensifies the ombré effect.
I’m loving Barry M’s new festive glitters at the moment- are they easily available outside the UK?
