Q: Which of the home colouring kits out there would you recommend? — Rita

A: Rita, I prefer the L'Oréal line of products.

Why? Because they do a lot of research on their products, and they have detailed shades.

But no matter which brand you choose, in order to get the best results for your hair, you need to a) know what you want, and b) know what you have. In other words, you need to understand your current hair colour.

Let's say that you have sandy blonde hair, and you want it to be cool blonde. If you buy a sandy blonde hair colour, it's going to be too warm, and you're going to end up with orange blonde.

But if you buy an ash blonde, then it will neutralize the warm tones already in your hair, so you will end up with what you want—cool blonde.

So choose carefully!
