Ask a dermatologist How can I tighten my sagging skin after weight loss?

Sagging skin after weight loss How can I tighten my sagging skin after weight loss?

The question

Hannah writes:

I’m only 20 years old but my cheeks are already sagging. I think this was probably due to a dramatic weight loss when I got sick. Now I look much older than my age.

Will my skin ever return to normal? If not, is there any remedy for this?

The answer

Dr. Nowell Solish says:

If there is significant weight loss, the skin can sag, like letting the air out of a balloon. The good news is that it can improve. The skin can remodel itself, just like after pregnancy.

It can take time, so be patient. I would wait at least six months or more.

She’s only 20, what kind of answer did you expect? Tons of info on plastic surgery and expensive procedures? At this age her skin is perfectly capable of lifting itself to where it should be at her new weight. It renews itself pretty quickly and collagen production is at its peak, so chances are the girl wouldn’t need anything done. Apart from good skin care routine appropriate for her age (which I guess she should have had before her weight loss).

Even after pregnancy they advise to wait at least a year so the skin could do most of it’s job before a woman starts thinking about surgery or anything like it.

With you being so young you can try retin a. It’s awesome as an anti ager!! I have been using it for 20 years and get mistaken for my boys older sister. Also look in to radio frequency and magnetic pulse therapy treatments to tighten your skin up. I use the Venus Freeze on my clients with wonderful results. This type of treatment goes down into your dermis and does a little dermal destruction,in turn your skin will then repair itself by producing collagen and tightening up. If the sagging is just slight then research micro current. Micro current will reteach the muscles and help hold it back in place. However if your skin is extremely saggy then surgery is the the only option.

I would advise patience, as the Dr. suggests. I’m 57, lost 60 lbs in a few months and even my skin tightened up. You’re too young to consider surgery at this point. Not only that, but you may regain some weight.
