"My hair is stuck in that awkward phase."
Hair consultation - Maria

Marie loves short hair, but is wondering if she should go shoulder-length.

Q: My hair is stuck in that awkward growing-out phase where it doesn't look good at all. I can't decide if I should go back to short or if I should aim for something slightly longer.

I tend to find my hair flat and boring, with too much hair at the wrong places. I want something chic and classic (I think). I really love having short hair, but I've also been curious about something like shoulder-length. I have to add that I'm only 4'11". I really don't feel confident with my hair at all right now so please help me! — Maria

A: Wow, Maria, what big, bold eyes you have... I would consider framing them with a soft, short bang to start your transformation.

This is a shape that you could jump right into now if you decided not to grow it out just yet.

The colour here is what I have in mind for you, using slices of a dark chocolate brown mixed in with your own colour. An easy grow-out if you wanted to get back to natural. The depth of colour will work wonders for you now and also if you choose to grow it longer.

In order to grow your hair and keep your cool at the same time, I would suggest cutting the back off and growing your sides out first. Demonstrated in this second cut with the bang, it is a super-sweet cut to start your journey.

Once the sides have grown out, start to grow the bang and the nape of your hair to take it to the next level. This is the cut I would suggest for your final destination at this time.

When you get the weight of your hair distributed so the thin and thick areas balance out, you can grow from here. This cut will work at a longer length as well. Keeping the bang at this length for balance and proportion will still feature your lovely eyes.

This is how I see you styling your hair with this shape, tucking your hair behind your ear and allowing the bang to fall loosely.

A mild waxy product should be applied to dry hair for control.

I hope this satisfies your current hair questions.
