Q: I have long, fine, straight, black (now re-virginized!) hair. I'm pretty busy with a new baby and residency—lately I haven't even been blow-drying anymore in an attempt to maximize my sleep-in time in the mornings. As a result, I've mostly been wearing my hair in a boring low ponytail.
My challenges are that my hair is pretty blah (especially in the front) and overall lacks volume. I had a failed experiment with bangs that made my already round face look comical. Can you suggest a style that would suit the shape of my face and is fairly low-maintenance? — Samira
A: Samira, you are a classic beauty and your hair is stunning as is.
I agree that bangs would be a big mistake. Your side part is the best way to work with your hairline.
There are a couple of things I would like to see on you.
Let's start with a shorter cut. In your description of your hair, you said it is straight and fine. A ponytail should be a proud pony with crisp ends. This length will do just that, giving you a more polished look. The line of this cut is slightly shorter in the back than the front, which gives it a modern cachet.
That said, I am a big fan of the length your hair now. You could keep the length and add a long, side-swept fringe and layer away from your face. This would freshen up your current look and you'd still be able to put it in a pony.
In regards to colouring your hair, I would leave it alone—it has incredible shine. I feel this is the perfect accessory for any person to own.
