Before there was Terry Richardson (the photographer behind those super-uncomfortable Miley Cyrus pics), there was Guy Bourdin.
In the 1970s, the late French photographer was one of the biggest names in fashion, working with Vogue, Chanel and Issey Miyake—and just like with Terry's pics, I need to warn you before you Google. Both have a sort of sicko, borderline pornographic and anti-woman side that comes out in some of their "art."
And yet Bourdin was definitely an artist, with a distinctive vision and style that influenced tons of people working in fashion today, including NARS founder François Nars. In fact, Nars (the person) was so inspired by him that he created NARS (the company)—and now, a limited-edition collection that pays tribute to Bourdin's undeniably bold, sexy and colourful work.
I guess we shouldn't be too surprised that NARS is courting controversy, given that the brand's whole claim to fame is a certain shade of blush—hint, hint. But the choice of Bourdin does give me pause, for a company that primarily sells to women. I think it's just a bit... icky.
Putting his work aside (if it's even possible to do that) and evaluating it on the makeup alone, there are some gorgeous colours, formulas and limited-edition items here that you may want to know about.
There are two parts to the Guy Bourdin offerings. First up is the colour collection, which comes out October 15th in the U.S. and November 1st in Canada, and which I'm showing you today. Then, on November 1st, everyone gets the gifting options—and you MUST stay tuned for the cutest makeup bags in the entire world (think lips! and hearts!).
Here are the deets on the colour collection, out this week in the U.S.:
NARS Guy Bourdin Cinematic Eyeshadow
This is a new eyeshadow formula with rich, deep pigment and a velvety-soft finish. Early reviews say it's getting excellent crease-resistance even after a full day of wear. Prices will be US$24.00 and C$28.00.
NARS Guy Bourdin Cinematic Eyeshadow in Wishful Thinking (macaw blue)
NARS Guy Bourdin Cinematic Eyeshadow in Rage (electric orchid)
NARS Guy Bourdin Cinematic Eyeshadow in Bad Behaviour (deep pewter)
NARS Guy Bourdin Cinematic Eyeshadow in Cambodia (pink copper)
NARS Guy Bourdin Cinematic Eyeshadow in Mississippi Mermaid (champagne)
NARS Guy Bourdin Cinematic Lipstick
Also a new formula, these lipsticks are much more moisturizing and creamy than previous NARS offerings, which tended to be on the drier side. They have Monoï butter (love anything Monoï) and vitamin E and are meant to feel more like balms than traditional lipstick. Prices will be US$26.00 and C$30.00.
NARS Guy Bourdin Cinematic Lipstick in Future Red (cherry)
NARS Guy Bourdin Cinematic Lipstick in Short Circuit (fire coral)
NARS Guy Bourdin Cinematic Lipstick in Last Tango (dusty rose)
NARS Guy Bourdin Cinematic Lipstick in Goodbye Emmanuelle (hot pink)
NARS Guy Bourdin Cinematic Lipstick in Full Frontal (rose violet)
NARS Guy Bourdin Blush
Blush put NARS on the map and while Orgasm is a soft, anyone-can-wear-it type of shade, these ones are much bolder and more highly pigmented. You'll definitely want to go easy on the application here. Prices are US$29.00 and C$32.00.
NARS Guy Bourdin Blush in Exhibit A (matte, vivid red)
NARS Guy Bourdin Blush in Coeur Battant (magenta)
NARS Guy Bourdin Blush in Day Dream (peachy pink)
NARS Guy Bourdin Nail Polish
Finally, nails. Word on the street is that these are so pigmented, you may even be able to get away with one coat. Prices are US$19.00 and C$21.00.
NARS Guy Bourdin Nail Polish in Tomorrow’s Red (scarlet flame)
NARS Guy Bourdin Nail Polish in Follow Me (deep fuchsia)
NARS Guy Bourdin Nail Polish in No Limits (bright pink violet)
NARS Guy Bourdin Nail Polish in Union Libre (blossom pink)
Here's a sneak peek at one of the makeup bags... do you die?
I'll update this post with links when everything is live... and stay tuned for the word on holiday. In the meantime, tell me:
What do you make of the NARS and Guy Bourdin pairing—is it icky or okay with you?
Will you be checking out any of these items?
What are your favourite NARS products? (They discontinued my all-time fave, which was a lippie called Flaming Dust... always the way!)
