Scarlett Johansson before and after

Last week's inaugural Before and After featuring Blake Lively definitely hit a nerve. Some of you guys thought that speculating on whether or not she's had plastic surgery crossed a line. You felt that even my saying that I liked her "before" was passing judgement on a personal choice that, unlike makeup and hair, should be off limits for discussion.

Others seemed to understand my point of starting this series—which wasn't to get all bitchy and judgey, but instead to kind of "normalize" celebrities. Seeing that they looked like regular people, just like you and me, before they got famous and started the tweaking, is a total self-esteem boost in my book. My intention isn't to create more insecurities or to encourage YOU to change stuff by showing what they did; it's to spread the realization that those perfect features are a genetic improbability. So let's all be a little more forgiving of ourselves and what we were born with.

Make sense? You tell me—this next one we're looking at is Scarlett Johansson.

Scarlett Johansson in 1997.

First up is this pic circa 1997 when Scarlett was just 12 years old. I know it's weird to talk about anything beauty-related on a 12-year-old, but it's the only good pic I could find that shows her original nose. Also, notice the lips—they were always super-plump. Damn, girl.

This one's from 2001 (age 17) and you'll need to help me out because I'm not certain if anything has changed yet. Her nose might be a little wider in the first shot, but it could be either the angle or the fact that she was only 12 and still growing into her nose. At the very least, I think you'll agree that her 2001 nose is for sure different to her 2013 one.

This is also from 2001 (maybe her first red carpet?). Same nose but add more eye makeup and she's looking fairly close to the Scarlett we know today. No matter what her nose shape, you can already tell she's going to be a knockout.

Scarlett in 2003

OMG, did you know she had a mullet? This is from 2003 and she actually does pull it off, weird as this haircut may be. Now, back to the nose. I feel like it's a bit thinner around the nostrils and the tip has been refined a bit; plus the bridge is not as wide. Looks great.

I feel like you can really sense that something has changed when you look at this one, from the 2006 Golden Globes. I don't know if she had a series of rhinoplasty surgeries—which does often happen—or if this is the same as the 2003 nose, but it's looking more defined and delicate. It's a subtle change, but you can see how it transforms her from girl next door to mega-sexy woman. Shortly after this, in 2007, she actually threatened legal action against allegations that she had plastic surgery. The lady doth protest too much...

Scarlett in 2008

I really love this pic, from a 2008 visit to Kuwait—how well does this girl wear red lipstick?! I'm also showing it to you because you can really see the bridge work here, as well as her new teeth. At age 12, they weren't this straight or even. The veneers make a huge difference and enhance the beauty of her gorgeous full lips.

Scarlett in 2013

Last pic is from earlier this year, so you can see where the nose is at now (as well as this colourful makeup and earring combo!). She really is a beauty.

Conclusion

Of course she was gorgeous before, and didn't "need" it—nobody needs it—but in this case, I think the very subtle refining of her nose served to enhance what she already had instead of making her look like a different person. (It's not anywhere near as dramatic of a transformation as Blake Lively.) Scarlett's features are so delicate that the slightly thinner and more defined nose just brought them out more. Clearly, she went to one of the very top surgeons because it's one of the best examples of celebrity rhinoplasty I've ever seen. As for the teeth, I'm always a fan of improvements in that department, budget allowing—teeth matter.
