Like Tarte, Josie Maran is one of those beauty brands that ticks off all my boxes: innovative products, natural ingredients, flattering colours, girly-glam packaging. And also like Tarte, I don't get my greedy little hands on it very often. Over the years, I've bought a few products on my own (a big deal for a beauty people, since our homes have more selection than Sephora); I have lip gloss, lip stain, eyeshadow and bronzer.
With the exception of the too-dark tinted moisturizer (which they've now come out with in better shades anyway), I've liked everything... and now the trend continues with this little kit for holiday 2013:
It's a four-piece set of Josie's bestselling essentials:
- Argan Color Stick in Spice
- 100% Pure Argan Oil Light
- Argan Illuminizer
- Argan High Gloss Lip Quench in Pink Honey (new limited edition shade; previously only available in clear)
They are mostly travel sizes but honestly, still pretty generous. I have blush sticks from an old Tarte set a few years ago that are the exact same size as the Color Stick here, and I STILL haven't finished them. Plus it's always nice to have travel versions of things you like, such as the oil and the illuminator, instead of having to pour them into generic white containers—a process I find a little depressing. All of the stuff in this set would be fine for daily use as well.
Naturally, the blush (which is half the size of their regular version) is my favourite part. The shade, Spice, is supposedly a "nude warm brown," which I would never try based on the description but on the cheeks reminds me of my go-to blush from Make Up For Ever. Just a nice, natural, flush that is neither too pink nor too peach. I really don't know where the brown came from. Anyone could wear this colour on either cheeks or lips.
I'm a longtime fan of Josie's other lip gloss, from when the brand first came out. Now she has a 100-percent natural argan oil gloss, which was previously only available in clear—but in this kit, it's being offered for the first time in Pink Honey. AND it's in the regular size, which normally retails for C$19/US$16. The shade is a soft, nudey pink; a "your lips, only better" type of thing. The texture is extremely light even though it feels very moisturizing. Not the best photo, and on the lips it's much lighter/sheerer than it appears in the tube, but you get the idea:
The illuminator is half the size of the regular version, and is a creamy texture with very fine shimmer in a warm bronzey hue. I wouldn't wear it all over my face—it would be way too much unless you mixed a tiny bit with foundation—but it's lovely dabbed at the tops of cheekbones, down the bridge of the nose and at the Cupid's bow. A little product goes a long way and you want to be strategic about placement, so I think the bottle would last you forever.
And finally, if you're an argan oil fan, then you'll be all over this bottle, which usually sells for C$18/US$14. As you probably know, argan oil can be used as a moisturizer, split end treatment, cuticle conditioner, dry skin tamer and more. I'm glad they included the Light version (did you know she came out with a light version?) for people worried about pore-clogging or oily residue, etc.
Now it's numbers time. This set sells for C$35/US$29, but is valued at C$70/US$58—so you're getting everything half price! Like I said, this brand is one of my personal faves, so it's pretty darn exciting to be able to round up all these goodies for such a great deal at this time of year.
