Hey Girl Did Ryan Gosling change his nose before he got super-famous? (We know he at least stopped plucking his eyebrows!)

Ryan Gosling before and after Did Ryan Gosling change his nose before he got super famous? (We know he at least stopped plucking his eyebrows!)

So far, our before and after subjects have all been females—but as an astute reader pointed out early on, the men of Hollywood go through their share of appearance changes, too. (The difference is the men are usually less obvious. Unless we’re talking about Bruce Jenner.) I knew I’d have to pick someone with major heartthrob status to be our first male in this column, and Canada’s very own Ryan Gosling was the clear winner.

First of all, there are many things less taxing than having to pore over dozens of photos of Ryan Gosling. Can’t say I minded this job at all. And second, I can’t help but wonder if something changed along the way with this guy. (And by “something,” I mean his nose.) He went from little movies like The Believer to suddenly becoming a household name from The Notebook, and then he was everywhere. Including multiple covers of GQ, looking like a major hottie.

Could he have had some assistance with that? Let’s take a closer look:

The before

So I think we all know Ryan got his start in the Mickey Mouse Club, after which he went on to Breaker High and then Young Hercules in the late ’90s. It was during this era that he was one of those guys with the dreamy hair in Bop:

Ha! That had nothing to do with his face, so I’ll carry on now. The next pic is from a 1999 Hercules and Xena convention.

Here we see that he was into bleaching his hair and tweezing his eyebrows (and possibly tanning beds?). And there is that distinctive schnoz—which I think has a slight bump as well—not to mention the charming expression. Eeks, you know exactly what he’d be like. I can only imagine his path of romantic destruction over the years.

Next up is Ryan in 2001, age 20:

Very handsome! Especially after cropping his hair, ditching the blonde and the tan, and growing in his eyebrows. Obviously Sandra Bullock thought so, too, since this was in the era of their relationship. Notice the width of his nostrils and the long tip.

The next pic is from 2004, at the premiere of The United States of Leland:

This was still pre-The Notebook. I like facial hair, but I think this hipster beard is a shade less groomed compared to how he’d show up on red carpet now. Again, look at his nostril area.

Now we’re in 2007, at the Critics’ Choice awards, and Ryan has gained a little weight for his role in Lars and the Real Girl:

He’s hot, but he’s definitely still hipster hot with that ‘stache (how is he the only man on earth who actually looks good with one?). His nostrils look quite wide here, but maybe the camera just caught him flaring them. The bridge looks straighter, though, so it’s possible that he may have already had the “work” done by this point. Or had repeat nose jobs.

The after

And now we move into the big leagues. This is Ryan at the premiere of Drive, in 2011 (age 30):

Ryan Gosling Drive premiere 2011 Did Ryan Gosling change his nose before he got super famous? (We know he at least stopped plucking his eyebrows!)

He’s lost some weight, and the beard is tidier, so that automatically changes his appearance. Do you think his nose is a little thinner, shorter, straighter and less projecting now?

Next up is another premiere, later in 2011:

Ryan Gosling Ides of March premiere 2011 Did Ryan Gosling change his nose before he got super famous? (We know he at least stopped plucking his eyebrows!)

Here, his beard’s cropped very short, he’s taking on that “leading man expression” and you get a more front-on view of his nose. I say it’s straighter, the tip has been removed and the nostrils have been refined—but we’re talking tiny, tiny.

The last pic is from earlier this year, at the Gangster Squad premiere:

Ryan Gosling Gangster Squad premiere 2013 Did Ryan Gosling change his nose before he got super famous? (We know he at least stopped plucking his eyebrows!)

Ryan was 32 here (he just turned 33 in November) and you get to see his face from a slightly tilted angle. To me, his nose clearly looks quite different compared to the early days. And I’m not the only one to speculate that Ryan had rhinoplasty. Here’s what one plastic surgeon had to say:

“Ryan Gosling has made a bold decision to get rid of his hooked nose. But it looks like things couldn’t be better for Gosling, and rhinoplasty is going to open up the new career horizons for him. Now after the nose job, with his nose tip elevated and hump removed the actor has turned into a classical Hollywood hot guy! Ryan Gosling has quickly positioned himself as a leading man in Hollywood as of late, and it is no doubt due to his fabulous looks as well as his talent. But this incredible looking man may not have been born with that chiseled profile, from the looks of these before and after pictures he had a nose job early on in his career. The rhinoplasty procedure he had was expertly done, resulting in less of a hooked nose giving him a younger more youthful appearance.”

The bottom line

Well, he said it. So it’s not just the female celebs who go under the knife to reach that next level—it’s the guys, too. Objectively, Ryan’s career probably would never have climbed this far if he hadn’t done this.

But he was still super-handsome before—and to be brutally honest, I think the ruggedness of his old face was more attractive. There’s almost a Ken doll-like perfection to Ryan now; he’s just so pretty. (And I want to be the pretty one!) I think a partner that makes you feel beautiful is the most important thing, and I would probably feel self-conscious and not beautiful enough in his presence.

Mind you, it’s not like I’m ever going to meet—or date—Ryan Gosling. I can only hope he’s reading from afar:

Have your say

What do you think has changed (if anything) about Ryan?
Do you prefer him “before” or “after”?
How do you feel about being with a partner who is “prettier” than you?

I just don’t get the big whoop. He’s a good actor, he’s attractive, he seems a nice enough person to like and smart enough to be interesting…but there are millions of those men on this earth and lots of them are actors…same thing with Bradley Cooper…I’m not saying that they aren’t fabulous, I just don’t think they are that extraordinarily special…

I don’t know…to me in the first picture, with the Bop hair, his nose looks pretty straight and like his current nose. It’s not a great quality picture but it looks the same. And in the one right after that the angle the picture was taken, with his face pointing down, makes his nose look bigger. So he might have but it’s really really subtle in my opinion.

Good for Gosling, BUT WHAT THE HELL TOOK HIM SOOOO DARN LONG TO FIX THAT UGLY NOSE!!! Hollyweird is full of people with horrendous noses, from Tom Cruise on down! Those people all have had bad or no management prior to making it big. If they had good management from the get go, most would have been advised to fix those ugly honkers before having the audacity of putting their face on 50′ screens! Old Hollywood had it better, had Marylin not fixed her bulbous nose and weak jaw, I doubt we would still be admiring her photos 60 years later!!! Both Liz Taylor and Elvis had their noses done and who know how many more, so young Hollyweird, TAKE NOTICE!!!!

You are an idiot. Worry about yourself before you criticize others.

I would agree that it appears he has had the bridge of his nose fixed but beyond that, I’m not so sure. I think it’s more a case of growing into it. He’s handsome enough but he’s not at all my type so I don’t get all the hype about him. I’m glad you’re including the men in these posts!

Michelle, this is the very first from you post that I didn’t read. I mean.. I tried.. but it just couldn’t get through the sentences.. he’s too beautiful!

I’m laughing at how I normally scrutinize the photos you put up for these posts but I’ve have taken it to a whole new level now!

I like both noses by the way! But i think I prefer his real one..more character?!

Yep, seems she’s started a buzz. I just saw a video on MSN stating that “A beauty blogger claims that heartthrob actor Ryan Gosling had a nose job before he became a massive superstar.” Not that they were nice enough to name check lol.

Yes, we might as well scrutinize men while we’re at it! I don’t think he did anything to his nose. The eyebrows were forgivable, considering it was the boyband decade. But lash curler, anyone? We need to hear it from a makeup artist how they do men’s makeup!

Who Cares?

Seriously, who cares? It wouldn’t be his nose that I would be staring at… if you know what I mean?
