Really appreciate what Kat Dennings was going for with her red carpet look for the People's Choice Awards. When planning such things, I'm told it always starts with the dress, which was a strapless, floor-length David Meister in black with red roses (similar here).
That meant she had a lot of freedom with her hair, which she wore down, in fairytale waves accented by a Jennifer Behr crystal headband at the crown. Just look at it here from the side—doesn't it inspire you to make more effort with your hair accessories?
The makeup, of course, had to be just as romantic as the dress and hair, so Avon makeup artist Lauren Andersen went for a look that was all about the lips (berry) and lashes (long and fluttery).
Let's zoom in for the close-up:
I am 99 percent there. Now that I see her face up close, I'm wondering if the foundation isn't a touch too heavy? And her eyebrows filled in a little too strongly? (You can see where the pencil is... maybe Kat needs my favourite magical brow gel.)
There is also the issue of the lip line, which looks like it's been drawn outside her natural lips at the top. But maybe she just likes it that way, because the same deal was going on that time she wore brown lipstick. Personally, I think drawing outside the line CAN be done, but only if you keep it to the corners. See here for my own personal lip-maximizing technique.
So now that we've seen the potential pitfalls, let's go through how to get Kat's exact look, step by step.
Kat Dennings' makeup at the People's Choice Awards
Well, almost. I don't know what foundation Lauren used on her, but I've sent a message on Instagram so hopefully she responds. You can be sure it's not Avon. I'm guessing something high-end like Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk—makeup artists love that stuff.
Next, Lauren groomed Kat’s brows with Votre Vu Arche de Triumphe Brow Definer, a soft tinted brow wax that comes in four shades. I've read that Lauren uses this a lot...
Then, she drew a thick, only slightly winged line on the upper lash line using Avon SuperShock Gel Eyeliner in Blackout.
The false lashes are Ardell Fashion Lashes #122:
Lashes also got a coat of the new Avon Mega Effects Mascara, which is a like a tiny, spiky paintbrush that helps you get at every lash.
On the apples of Kat’s cheeks is Avon Ideal Luminous Blush in Coral Radiance, a ginger colour that looks barely there (and doesn't fight with the lips):
To finish, Lauren used Avon Ultra Color Absolute Lipstick in Radiant Raisin on Kat’s lips. (It's available now in a mini size; coming out next month in regular.)
Kat Dennings' headband at the People's Choice Awards
Can't leave without talking about the headband once more. The exact one—a $625 silk chiffon headwrap with encrusted crystals—has to be ordered directly from the designer, Jennifer Behr.
But she has more than a few lower-priced options at regular stores, including the Charlotte Headband:
And if you're into the haute hippie look, the Gilded Baroque Headpiece:
LOVE her stuff.
