If you read the big Golden Globes post, then you know how I feel about Sofia's look here. Actually love the hair. Don't like some of the makeup. Specifically, the way-too-false-looking false eyelashes, the thick texture of the lipstick and of course, her bushy brows (but the latter is an ongoing concern).
Still, there are elements that are nice—and her makeup artist Kayleen McAdams is no slouch. The lip colour is pretty if you applied it more as a stain, and I like the brown shading around the eyes.
Here's the close-up:
Instead of a makeup breakdown from Kayleen, this year it came from Sofia herself! Well, not like she emailed me directly. But I received an email from the brand she reps, CoverGirl, which listed in her own words what she's got on her face.
"For this year's Golden Globes, I really wanted to do something different. I wear makeup every day—I wouldn't think about leaving the house without it!—but of course it's such a big night, and everyone is taking pictures, so I have to look good! With my dress so elegant and my necklace so bold (and heavy!), I wanted to keep my hair and makeup simple and classic," says Sofia.
On her skin is CoverGirl TruBlend Liquid Makeup in Perfect Beige, which she describes as lightweight and blendable, and then a light dusting of powder to set it.
On the apples of her cheeks, Sofia is wearing CoverGirl Clean Glow Blush in Roses. This is their newest blush and it's quite a nice product—Katy Perry wears it as well.
"My dress and jewels were the centre of attention, so I had to balance my hair and makeup. For me, a really glamorous evening look starts with the eyes. I love the drama of a cat eye—tonight I went with brown liner as opposed to black," says Sofia. She is wearing CoverGirl Bombshell Intensity Eye Liner in Chocolate Kiss, which is their new liquid liner (it also comes in black).
To add sparkle, Sofia is wearing another newbie product, CoverGirl Bombshell Shine Eye Shadow in Gold Goddess. This is a new range of cream shadows and I've been really impressed!
"As always, I LOVE big lashes so I used CoverGirl Bombshell Volume Mascara on my top and bottom lashes to add volume and intensity." This was the product I was most excited about when I previewed the new P&G Beauty launches last fall in NYC. It's a dual-ended mascara, one side to add volume and the other a super-black topcoat. I found the short, chubby wand a bit clumsy to use, but it does give good results, especially for a drugstore product. Funny she didn't mention the very obvious false lashes, though... they're definitely not from this mascara.
Finally, lipstick. "For me, lipstick is a must—I feel naked without it. I wish I could just wear a nude shade, but it's not me—I need colour. I went with a bold red with CoverGirl Lip Perfection Lipstick in Flame. Oh, and I also always keep a gloss in my purse for touch-ups!"
Here's how it all came together... and also, admire the hair:
The hairstylist behind it was Harry Josh. “We wanted to keep Sofia looking modern and fresh, and a chic, luxurious blowout lent her that,” he says.
To get the look, the only tools he used were a two-inch round brush and his new Harry Josh Pro Tools Pro Dryer 2000, the splurge-worth blowdryer that everyone is buzzing about lately:
He created a diagonal part and dried her hair section by section with the brush. “Sometimes less is more in a sea of overly intricate hairstyles," says Harry. "Simple and chic can steal the show.”
