Amber Heard, Golden Globes Awards, 2014

Amber Heard can do no wrong lately. (Did you see her at the Art of Elysium Heaven Gala the night before the Golden Globes? Killed it.) This look is just as striking, in a different way. It's all nudes and pinky browns and I think for the first time ever I'm liking these colours.

Apparently the palette was her idea. “Amber brought some of her own ideas to the mix,” says her makeup artist, Matthew VanLeeuwen. “She liked the idea of focusing on sultry chocolate eyes, creamy skin and soft, nude lips. I was just bringing out the remarkable geometry and beauty of her face.” That's true—I think Matthew is definitely one of the most talented artists, but it's gotta be a bit easier with a face like this, right?

To prep her skin, Matthew used Clé de Peau Beauté Gentle Nourishing Emulsion.

Then he primed with the Hourglass No. 28 Primer Serum. Unlike most primers (or serums), this is actually an oil that gives you a hydrated, dewy and more luminous base for makeup. It's a blend of 14 essentials oils and 10 plant oils.

The next part is interesting—Matthew actually applied the concealer, Hourglass Hidden Corrective Concealer in Warm, before the foundation. I always feel like you end up wiping away the concealer when you do that, but I guess every makeup artist has a different way of working. I imagine if you don't have too many flaws to cover, and you're only doing light foundation, it could create a nice, light, blended finish. By the way, this is a fantastic concealer—quite similar to the Clé de Peau pricey one!

He followed with Hourglass Veil Fluid Makeup in Light Beige, which is a long-wearing liquid foundation with pretty solid coverage ability. I wear this foundation sometimes myself and love it.

Next, the cheeks got a dusting of the sheer rose shade from the Hourglass Illume Creme-to-Powder Bronzer Duo in Sunset.

Then, he took the other colour option for this same palette, Hourglass Illume Creme-to-Powder Bronzer Duo in Bronze Light, and used the sheer champagne shade as a highlight.

To set the complexion, no surprise that he used one of my top 15 new products of 2013—the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Ethereal Light, which is an opalescent sheer powder that mimics a moonlit glow. This is the shade I use most often on myself.

Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil in Soft Brunette was used to fill in Amber's brows. I have this pencil and it's a good one; look how natural it looks on her versus all the bad brows we've seen on the red carpet.

The base colour, applied all over the lids, was the shell shade from the Hourglass Vol. 6 Eye Palette.

He followed with the bronze shimmer shade from Hourglass Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo in Gypsy in the crease and underneath the eyes.

He deepened that bronze colour with the brown shade from the Hourglass Vol. 6 Eye Palette, above, and also applied it to the outer corners, top and bottoms of the lids.

Next, he lined Amber's eyes with a deep plum pencil (try MAC Eye Kohl in Prunella). “I also smudged the line with the black shadow from the palette,” says Matthew.

Matthew also applied a high-shine pearl eyeshadow to the inner corners of the eyes (no word on what it is but I've Instagrammed him to see if we can find out). Update: Matthew told me he used D&G The Eyeliner Crayon Intense in Shimmer 12, a shimmering champagne pink:

For the lashes, he did a single coat of Hourglass Film Noir Mascara, allowed it to dry and then curled her lashes. Interesting...

After that, he added a few individual lashes (try Ardell Duralash Naturals Flare in Medium Black). I love that he revealed the false lashes, unlike some people (*cough* Sofia Vergara *cough*).

Amber's lips were first lined with Hourglass Trace Lip Liner in Bare:

Then Matthew applied Hourglass Femme Rouge Velvet Creme Lipstick in Whisper, a golden pinky beige shimmer.

Here's how the look all came together. With the side view you can really appreciate the subtle drama of the eyeshadow. Really love how this compliments her colouring, light brown hair and blue dress.
