Still dreaming about Rita Ora's makeup from last week's Grammys? Same here. It's one of those looks that really inspires you to do colour, instead of playing it safe in the comfort zone of browns and greys.
The mega-talented makeup artist behind it was Kathy Jeung—she did Rashida Jones for the Golden Globes, which was one of my faves. Kathy asked if we'd like to know what she used on Rita? Of course, on everyone's behalf, I said yes.
"Rita is a sweetheart, a joy to work with and has the most wonderful face to create look variations,” says Kathy. “This is the second time I’ve worked with her. For the Grammys, her gorgeous metallic green Lanvin dress had a cool purple iridescent highlight, so we decided to pick a similar colour for the eyes, making the smoky amethyst jewel colour the focus. I framed them with a softly structured brow; a neutral, matte lip with a hint of pink; subtle sculpting with bronzer; and a wash of pink blush."
Here's the gorgeous side view, where you can really see the colour on the lids:
And here's the close-up:
To create a smooth base for the makeup, Kathy started by applying a few drops of John Masters Organics Pomegranate Facial Nourishing Oil to Rita's clean skin.
For hydration around the eyes, she used Teamine Eye Complex.
Then, Revision Skincare Intellishade Original Anti-Aging Tinted Moisturizer SPF 45 for lightweight hydration and protection.
Did you know makeup artists take care of the skin on their clients' bodies, too? Kathy moisturized with Pure Fiji Body Butter in Coconut (a new brand to check out if you're a coconut obsessive like moi).
And then she layered Jergens Soft Shimmer Skin Radiance Moisturizer on top to catch the light.
Now, on to the makeup. Kathy gave Rita's skin an air-brushed effect using every makeup artist's favourite foundation, the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk in 7.5. Definitely check it out if you're foundation-shopping—you cannot go wrong with this one.
Kathy mixed the Luminous Silk with Charlotte Tilbury Wonder Glow Instant Soft Focus Beauty Flash to add luminosity and a lit-from-within glow.
Then she used another makeup artist (and beauty editor) fave, Clé de Peau Beauté Concealer in Honey, to hide any remaining imperfections. I get asked about this concealer a lot and seriously, it is the best. End of story.
Chanel Poudre Universelle Libre Natural Finish Loose Powder in 30 Naturel set the face makeup.
Next, Kathy did some soft sculpting and highlighting with Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow, a highlighting and bronzing powder duo. How gorgeous are Charlotte's products?
Cargo BeachBlush in Sunset Beach gave Rita's cheeks a pinky flush.
To fill in Rita's naturally dark eyebrows, Kathy used Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Brunette.
Next, she shaded the brow bones with Jouer Powder Eyeshadow in Pecan.
Inside the inner rims, all the way around the eyes, Kathy lined with Cargo Swimmables Eye Pencil in Pfeiffer Beach (a waterproof soft brown).
Then it was time for some colour. Kathy chose Sephora Collection Jumbo Liner 12HR Wear Waterproof in Purple Matte, and lined all the way around the lash line.
She blended Chanel Irreelle Duo Silky Eyeshadow Duo in 20 Orient Express over the lids and layered it on top of the pencil for extra staying power.
To define the crease, she used the deep burgundy shade from the Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette in 970 Stylish Move.
Rimmel London ScandalEyes Retro Glam Mascara in Black finished off the eyes (since Rita is their newest ambassador, after all).
Finally, the lips. Kathy lined them with Make Up For Ever Aqua Lip Waterproof Lipliner Pencil in 1C Nude Beige (a great colour choice, since it won't show up as obvious lip liner).
The pretty matte pink is Lipstick Queen Velvet Rope Lipstick in Star System, which Kathy describes as a luxurious matte in gorgeous packaging. Everybody needs some Lipstick Queen in their life—it's the line created by beauty-preneur Poppy King. (By the way, her book is so, SO inspiring. Highly recommend.)
