Nobody does a browny/bronzey smoky eye better than Penélope Cruz. The woman has the dream eyelid shape for eyeshadow application—loads of room both above and below the crease—as well as perfectly almond-shaped eyes and gently arching brows.
Oh, and when you're as famous as Penélope is, you get gurus like Charlotte Tilbury to do your makeup. "Penélope’s look was inspired by the sultry silver screen siren Sophia Loren," says Charlotte. "I wanted to really exaggerate her incredible almond-shaped eyes and make them the main focus of the look. When I am creating a look for the red carpet, it’s so important to marry the makeup with the dress. Because Penélope’s dress was so bold, I wanted to keep the look neutral and glossy but with that touch of old-school Hollywood glamour."
Here's the close-up, where you can see how Charlotte lined her eyes all the way around:
Here are the products she used:
Charlotte first prepped Penélope’s skin with her own Charlotte Tilbury Charlotte’s Magic Cream:
Next, she applied Charlotte Tilbury WonderGlow Skin Illuminator to create a soft, flawless, candle-light effect before the makeup.
Then she evened out Penélope's skin with a thin layer of Lancôme Teint Miracle in Buff 6 (W), along with a touch of concealer on any areas of redness, under the eyes, around the nose and on any imperfections.
She also used the sculpting shade of Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow to trace under the cheekbones and around the jawline. (Jessica Biel wore this product on Oscars night, too.) Charlotte used the highlighting shade on the high points of the cheekbones, down the nose and onto the bow of the lips.
Charlotte filled in Penélope's brows with Lancôme Le Crayon Poudre Powder Pencil for the Brows in Taupe, emphasizing a Sophia Loren-inspired arch.
To create the elongated, feline eye shape, Charlotte used a black kohl liner on the upper and lower lash lines, dragging it upwards and outwards into a feline flick, and into the inner corners of the eyes to accentuate Penélope's almond shape. Charlotte also used the same pencil to line the inner waterlines to dial up the intensity. One to try: new Smashbox Always Sharp Waterproof Kôhl Liner, which has a built-in sharpener inside the cap.
Charlotte used her own Charlotte Tilbury Colour-Coded Eye Shadow Palette in Dolce Vita on Penélope again (the first time was here) to create copper/brown smoky eyes that picked up on the amber highlights in Penélope's brown eyes. How incredible is this palette?!
Charlotte added a corner eyelash at the outer edges for extra red carpet drama and again, to accentuate the feline shape of Penélope's eyes. To finish, she added many coats of Lancôme Hypnôse Waterproof Custom Volume Mascara on the top and bottom lashes.
Charlotte first prepped the lips with Lancôme Baume in Love Sheer Tinted Lip Balm, and then lined them.
Then, she slicked on Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G Lipstick in the pinky-nude Penelope Pink (created for Penélope herself—'cuz that's another perk of being a star; Charlotte names lipsticks after you).
Here's the final effect:
She looks SO glam. I love the bronze and brown with the pink dress. Gorgeous, right?
