Best spring fragrances 2014

It's that time again! Time to make our way through the kajillion new fragrances that are launching this spring. I've narrowed things down to my 12 favourites. Here's my take on what they're like—and why you'd like 'em. Which one is saying your name?

1. Balenciaga Rosabotanica

Balenciaga Rosabotanica

What it is: A spicy floral.

What it smells like: Spicy rose. (The spices are cardamom and pink pepper, with a base of white amber.)

Why try it: Don't let the "rose" here throw you off—this isn't your typical old-lady floral. Nope, it's an extremely unique, feminine and sexy scent that is vaguely "floriental" but surprisingly, still light and fresh. A must-try.

Where to find it: Sephora.

2. Yves Saint Laurent Supreme Bouquet

Yves Saint Laurent Supreme Bouquet

What it is: A white floral.

What it smells like: A burst of white flowers. Think: tuberose and jasmine with ylang ylang and amber.

Why try it: Of the three scents in YSL's new Oriental Collection (their answer to Tom Ford's fragrance range), this was the standout for me. Fellow white flower-lovers will LOVE.

Where to find it: Select Hudson's Bay and Holt Renfrew stores and Saks.

3. Maison Martin Margiela Replica Lazy Sunday Morning

Maison Martin Margiela Replica Lazy Sunday Morning

What it is: A floral woody musk.

What it smells like: Well, a "lazy Sunday morning"—or to me, clean skin. That's the white musk in here; there's also orange flower, iris and white woods.

Why try it: It's hard not to love the concept of Martin Margiela's Replica line of scents that reproduce familiar moments. The packaging alone is SO cool. You'll like this one if you're more of a niche fragrance person, and like quieter, fresher scents.

Where to find it: Sephora.

4. Carven L'Eau de Toilette

Carven L'Eau de Toilette

What it is: A fresh, woody floral.

What it smells like: Green and fresh. The top notes are all citrus, and then as it dries down you get the main bouquet of freesia and a sandalwood-musk base.

Why try it: There's a real charm to this one—it's very much a happy-making fragrance. (Seriously, try not to smile after putting this on.) It's quite youthful, but in an expensive French way, if you know what I'm sayin'.

Where to find it: Holt Renfrew and Saks.

5. Bottega Veneta Essence Aromatique

Bottega Veneta Essence Aromatique

What it is: A unisex fresh-floral.

What it smells like: Herbal yet musky. The initial spritz gives you crisp bergamot and coriander top notes, but it gets warmer as it dries down, and then you'll detect vanilla, patchouli and sandalwood.

Why try it: I always think Bottega scents smell like money. Like, put it on and you instantly feel like a rich person. This one is very "summer on my yacht on the Italian riviera." It's a good one if you like your scents with a hint of the masculine.

Where to find it: Hudson's Bay and Nordstrom.

6. Dolce & Gabbana Dolce

Dolce & Gabbana Dolce

What it is: A white floral.

What it smells like: White flowers with equal parts fruitiness and soapiness. The opener is neroli; the heart white amaryllis, narcissus and white water lily; and the base is musk.

Why try it: Have you looked at the bottle?! Hands down the prettiest in this spring's selection. The scent itself is equally feminine; the fruitiness helps tame the headiness of the white flowers.

Where to find it: Sephora.

7. Salvatore Ferragamo Signorina Eleganza

Salvatore Ferragamo Signorina Eleganza

What it is: A floriental chypre.

What it smells like:  Subtly fruity, leathery and powdery all at once. (But again, super-subtle.)

Why try it: This is your scent if you're looking for something that doesn't overwhelm—it really melds with the skin well—and that is appropriate for a wide range of situations, from office to evening. I find it luxurious, elegant and delicate.

Where to find it: Hudson's Bay and Nordstrom.

8. Marc Jacobs Daisy Delight

Marc Jacobs Daisy Delight

What it is: A fruity floral.

What it smells like: Juicy apple and white florals. Other notes include freesia, quince flower, iris, gardenia, cedar and sandalwood.

Why try it: You might like this better than the original Daisy—I think it's lighter and dries down a little warmer. This one's your crowd-pleaser of the bunch.

Where to find it: Sephora.

9. Fresh Life

Fresh Life

What it is: A unisex green floral.

What it smells like: Clean and natural. I get a strong water note from this one, along with grass, citrus, cucumber, lilac and amber.

Why try it: If you've ever bought anything from Fresh, then you already know what a knack they have at making mouthwateringly yummy (and unique) fragrances. This is perfume for the non-perfume person and a good choice if you loved scents like Clean or Amazing Grace (although it's less powdery than the latter).

Where to find it: Sephora.

10. See By Chloé Eau Fraîche

See By Chloe Eau Fraiche

What it is: A green floral.

What it smells like: Airy, watery and barely flowery. (Is the water note from the water hyacinth?) There's also jasmine, apple blossom and musk here.

Why try it: This is the perfect warm-weather scent, as it's so very breezy and light. I much prefer it to the original See By Chloé and can seriously inhale this all day without at all feeling sick of it or that it's too sweet/strong/floral. You must try this—it's a really pleasant surprise.

Where to find itSephora.

11. Thierry Mugler Alien Eau Extraordinaire

Thierry Mugler Alien Eau Extraordinaire

What it is: A woody floral.

What it smells like: A citrusy, light-as-air version of Alien. (So, neroli, tiare, cashmere and amber.)

Why try it: Have I mentioned I love Alien? I'm not an Angel person in the slightest, but Alien, I can do. It's very sexy. This version I would wear as a warm-weather evening scent, since it evokes the sultriness of the original but in a lighter, more luminous form.

Where to find itSephora.

12. Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Limon Verde

Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Limon Verde

What it is: A unisex woody citrus.

What it smells like:  A Caipirinha—that's Brazil's national drink featuring muddled lime and sugar (and booze, cachaça). No booze here, but I definitely get the first two.

Why try it: I've been collecting these annual Aqua Allegorias for a few years now, and love just about every edition, as they're all based on sparkling citrus notes. This one is the most citrusy of all and would feel super-refreshing on a hot day.

Where to find it: Hudson's Bay.
