We're used to seeing Kate Hudson in soft, peachy makeup and carefree Boho hairstyles—but last night, she had a pretty significant style departure.

At the Wish I Was Here screening in NYC, she complemented her strapless black gown with super-sleek hair and a dark lipstick, for a look that was sooo sexy. And I could not be more on board with it.

You need to see the head-to-toe, since I really think the dress plays a big role in how great this looks:

You see? Without the bare shoulders, and even without the racy cutout action, the hair and makeup wouldn't have worked nearly as well.

Speaking of the makeup, are you noticing a trend here? Deep lipstick shades are popping up more and more on the red carpet as a vampy counterpoint to the expected summer pinks and oranges. The other week, it was Olivia Munn who rocked a summery dark mouth, and before that, we saw ones on Laetitia Casta, Rooney Mara and Cara Delevingne in Cannes.

No word yet on the exact shade makeup artist Leslie Lopez used for Kate's lipstick, but I'm really into its '90s, purplish-brown tone:

A few shades to try: Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge in 13 Purple, Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Chocoliscious or MAC Lipstick in Paramount.

Also take in the hairstyle, which isn't just stick-straight but also a) worn in a deep side part; b) tucked behind both ears and c) tossed behind both shoulders. These little changes are the details that really dress up and modernize a simple hairdo.

To get the look, stylist David Babaii prepped the hair with GHD Straight & Smooth Spray before blowing straight with a paddle brush. He finished with a GHD Eclipse flat iron before brushing into place and securing the hair behind the ears with bobby pins.

Pretty easy, but wow—between the lipstick, the hair and the outfit does it ever make a big impact!
