Who had the best hair and makeup at the 2014 ESPY Awards? Here are the celebrity close-ups!

Oh look, one of the few red carpet events of the summer just happened!

Held in Los Angeles on Wednesday night, the ESPY Awards—the Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards—are the fanciest night of the year in sports.

And they're where A-list athletes like Maria Sharapova and Nastia Liukin mingle with A-list celebs such as Cameron Diaz. (Okay, and a few B-listers: Jessica Alba, Chrissy Teigen and more...)

Here are the red carpet close-ups:

Cameron Diaz

Cameron Diaz, ESPY Awards, 2014

Wow! Seriously, wow! Cameron is super-gorgeous these days—first with the matte orange lips, and now here in a wonderful bright pink. She's been working with makeup artist Melanie Inglessis lately, so it's no wonder her lip choices (not to mention her skin) are looking so great. Since Melanie has used it before on Olivia Wilde, I'm going to take a guess that this might be Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Matte Lip Tar in Nylon, a "classic bubblegum pink with a neon twist."

Love how it's paired with a pretty wash of pink blush and soft, sculpted lids. Plus, the hair! A centre part and easy, tousled waves are perfect on Cam.

Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba, ESPY Awards, 2014

And now for something completely different. Jessica's all bronzey, gold and glam, and it's a huge (HUGE!) improvement over last time we saw her, at the Guy's Choice Awards. The thing that's drawing me in here is the brushed-up brow action. Those fans at the inner corners are excellent! Using a brow wax to hold them up and in place is a great little trick here. Jessica's makeup artist and BFF, Lauren Andersen, used Votre Vu brow wax, although I'm partial to Givenchy Mister Eyebrow.

I also love the light thrown in the middle of her face, which is from Tom Ford Shade & Illuminate (swoon!) applied on top of Koh Gen Do foundation. Possibly could've used a lighter hand with the shading under the cheekbones. The eyes were swept with Avon Eye Dimensions Eye Shadow in Khaki Chic and defined with Hourglass Calligraphy Liquid Eye Liner, with Avon Kohl Eye Liner in True Black in the waterlines. But as usual, I could've done without the fakey-fake false lashes. The mascara was Avon Mega Effects, and why they didn't stop there, I don't know. On her lips is Kevyn Aucoin The Elegant Lip Gloss in Vesuvian.

Notice how she's wearing the hairstyle we saw the other day on Kate Hudson—stick-straight, with a defined part and tucked behind both ears. All the better to show off that spikey jewellery!

Chrissy Teigen

Chrissy Teigen, ESPY Awards, 2014

The big news here is that Chrissy's gone blonde! And I think it looks great on her. (See here for the last time we saw her, if you can't remember the brunette.) Of course, I had to look up who did it and it was Tracey Cunningham—why am I not surprised? She always, always does the hair colour I'm most enamoured with on celebrities. Go creep on her Insta for the Chrissy recipe, and others!

Celeb stylist Jen Atkin—who I'll be interviewing shortly, woo hoo!—did the hairstyling. She did big, loose, bouncy waves and used the Luv AJ Tusk Comb on one side. I'm crazy about this idea of pinning one side back to give waves a more updated look!

As for the makeup, it was Lauren Andersen again, and she used the same Koh Gen Do foundation. But Chrissy got bronzer on her cheeks (Lorac TANtalizer Baked Bronzer) and a darker eye look (with smudged-out Avon Glimmersticks Eye Liner in Blackest Black and Avon Eye Dimensions Eye Shadow in Sultry Smoke). Her lips got a slick of Avon Ultra Color Absolute Lipstick in Caramel Comfort (see my review of that here).

Jessica Szohr

Jessica Szohr, ESPY Awards, 2014

Haven't seen Jessica Szohr in forever, and she's looking really cute. I love this lighter brown hair colour for her, and how she's pulled it up into a high, slightly fuzzy ponytail. As Us Weekly beauty director Gwen Flamberg mentioned the other day, let's not be afraid of a little frizz, okay? I think it's adorbs. (Also see this post about working with your baby hairs.)

The makeup, too, is softer than I remember it—if you compare it to her last blog appearance in 2011, where she was over-bronzed. Sure, she could maybe use a blotting paper, but her skin looks fresh and dewy, and I love the hit of purple shadow paired with the black eyeliner. Well done!

Keri Hilson

Keri Hilson, ESPY Awards, 2014

This is pretty, too, although the false-eyelash monster has struck again! I don't mind Keri's as much as Jessica Alba's, though. (And there's a way worse pair to come, just you wait!) I think the reason these are semi-working is because the false eyelashes ARE the look. Her hair is scraped back, tight to the head, and she's wearing tiny earrings and totally nude makeup. So that lets the lashes stand out in a more theatrical, deliberate way.

Hold up though—is she wearing lip liner under her bottom lip? I really hope not!

Maria Sharapova

Maria Sharapova, ESPY Awards, 2014

Maria Sharapova is such a hottie. I actually appreciate that she keeps it fairly simple on the red carpet, not doing anything too crazy and "FASHUN". These are the same sparkly eyes and textured waves she wore to last year's ESPY Awards (just last time she tied her hair up at the back). With the perfectly groomed brows, dangly earrings and matte lips, everything is in perfect balance. I would like to look like this every day, please!

Jordana Brewster

Jordana Brewster, ESPY Awards, 2014

How would you like to be standing in sunlight this harsh with a mob of photographers capturing your face magnified by a kajillion? Jordana's skin looks pretty incredible in this situation. She's got great eyebrow fans as well, and I think the lashes are actually natural. (Thank you, makeup artist Jamie Greenberg!!)

I love this doll-like makeup—bright cherry red on the lips with a matching flush on the cheeks. The lip colour is Mark Gloss Gorgeous Stay on Lip Stain in Lolli, and the blush is Mark Touch & Glow Shimmering Cream Cubes.

Nastia Liukin

Nastia Liukin, ESPY Awards, 2014

Nastia is a gymnast, and I'd say she did really, really well on this red carpet considering she doesn't have the A-team of hair and makeup artists that all these celebrities do. The woman has amazing hair—and I'm guessing it's this colour naturally? There are no roots to speak of. (Jealous? Me? Hell yes.)

Even the makeup isn't bad and her skin finish looks pretty natural. Perhaps a bit heavy on the eyes, but I'm okay with it; the shadow sort of distracts from her brows, which are on the thinner side.

Iggy Azalea

Iggy Azalea, ESPY Awards, 2014

I might be developing a beauty obsession with Iggy Azalea. Even with the low quality of this pic, you can see how she killed it at this event. (Sorry Cameron, sorry Jess!) Her pillowy pink lips are INSANE, and I love the brushed back '60s hairstyle. What do you think—new beauty crush-worthy?

Cheryl Burke

Cheryl Burke, ESPY Awards, 2014

Left the worst lashes for the grand finale here. Cheryl Burke, what were you thinking?! These look like some kind of creepy crawly creature has set up a home on her eyelids. It's so perplexing, because she really didn't need them—the rest of her look is so cute! I love her freckles and the harmony between her tawny blush and lip colours. Even the shape of her lips is super-pretty. And while I loved her long hair and bangs at last year's ESPYs, the side-parted bob is great on her, too.

What do we have to do to get people to stop self-sabotaging with the lashes, you guys?
