Fall makeup update

My cold-weather beauty stash.

Summer has come and gone, so it's time update our makeup bags for the cooler weather ahead! From foundation to nail colour and even fragrance, here are the beauty products I'm loving most for the fall season. Hopefully this will inspire you to add a few new items to your daily routine!

1. Switch to a Demi-Matte Foundation

Chanel Perfection Lumiere Velvet Foundation

Summertime was all about a fresh, dewy complexion—but now that fall has finally hit, I've been loving velvety, demi-matte foundations. These types of foundations are in between matte and dewy, so you still get natural look, but with a slightly more refined finish.

Chanel Perfection Lumière Velvet Smooth-Effect Makeup is my current favourite (and how chic is its packaging?!). Shake the bottle well, apply it with your fingers and voilà, gorgeous but not overly matte skin. If you have oily skin, this foundation will be a dream for you; otherwise, moisturize really well before using this to avoid any potential clinging to dry patches.

2. Go for a Matte Bronzer

Smashbox Bronze Lights

As we leave our sun-kissed skin behind, we all get a little paler. Most people tend to use bronzer in the summertime, but I think it can be just as useful in the fall to inject a bit of life back into the skin.

Instead of one with shimmer, try a matte option such as Smashbox Bronze Lights in Suntan Matte. You can use it for subtle contouring, or even take it all over the skin with a big fluffy powder brush.

3. Wear a Rosy Powder Blush

What better time than fall to wear a matte rosy blush that mimics the flushed cheeks you get from cold weather?

Lancôme Blush Subtil in Aplum has a touch of mauve and pairs perfectly with berry-toned lip colours. As the name suggests, it's subtle enough that you don't end up looking like a clown.

4. Try a Sculpting Blush

MAC Powder Blush in Melba

Fall is the perfect time to play with subtle sculpting. Instead of contouring powder (which can be super-tricky to get right), I like to use a blush that is a bit warm-toned and pairs nicely with dramatic fall eyes.

I always grab MAC Powder Blush in Melba when I want a sculpted look. It's another matte blush, and it applies incredibly smoothly. (It definitely packs a punch, though, so have a light hand with this one.) If you see this in the store, you'd probably pass it up because it doesn't look like much in the pan, but trust me, it's gorgeous on the skin!

5. Invest in a Versatile Eyeshadow Palette

I love experimenting with eye makeup in the fall and winter. It's definitely the time to try out more dramatic eyeshadow looks, as there's less your makeup will smear and smudge.

A palette I haven't been able to put down is the elusive Lorac Pro Palette 2 (isn't she a beaut?). If you can get your hands on one, it will probably be your go-to autumn palette. It includes both warm- and cool-toned neutral shades, so you get a lot of versatility. Plus there's a plum and a navy—which you can amp up even more by applying with a wet angled brush for a fun coloured liner look.

6. Switch to a Non-Black Eyeliner

Black and brown eyeliners are fine, sure, but they're SO predictable. Why not try a grey or a navy for the same intensity in a less expected shade?

These Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils in Smoke (deep grey matte) and Sabbath (deep navy matte) are a subtle way to spice up your eye makeup. They're super-creamy, yet incredibly long-lasting. You can swipe them somewhat messily along your lash line and then diffuse the colour with a brush for a lived-in look. I've been loving Sabbath paired with the MAC Powder Blush in Melba—navy and peach go really nicely together!

7. Try a Bronze Eyeshadow Stick

You might've noticed how bronzes and coppers are a huge eyeshadow trend on the red carpet (just look at Penélope Cruz here). If you're in a hurry, but still want to look put-together, a shadow stick in this colour is a great way to do a little somethin' somethin' on the eyes. It's a one-step smoky eye!

Rimmel ScandalEyes Eye Shadow Stick in Bad Girl Bronze is my favourite eye product right now. I just do a quick swipe of this pencil all over the lid and blend it up to the crease with a fluffy brush. The shade is warm and would compliment most eye colours—it has enough copper in it to make blue and green eyes pop, while the golden sheen makes brown eyes look like honey. You might want to layer an eyeshadow primer underneath for good measure, but the staying power is pretty great.

8. Test-Drive a Brown or Berry Lipstick

L to R: Lancôme Color Design Lipcolor in Natural Beauty, MAC Lipstick in Modesty, MAC Lipstick in Syrup and Rimmel Lasting Finish Matte Lipstck by Kate Moss in 107.

Lipsticks are probably my favourite beauty product to buy, no matter what the season. The quintessential fall lip colour is a dark, vampy berry, and my favourite is Rimmel Lasting Finish Matte Lipstick by Kate Moss in 107. The perfect mix of berry and plum tones, it's super-pigmented, lasts for hours, and gives you a beautiful matte finish that isn't drying.

Another big trend is brown lipstick—which can be tricky to pull off! If you like the Kylie Jenner look, but don't want to commit to it fully, Lancôme Color Design Lipcolor in Natural Beauty is a nice, brownish nude that isn't TOO dramatic. You can wear it either full-on or just patted into the lips for a more subtle effect. The formula is pigmented, super-creamy and feels comfortable on the lips.

An alternative brownish shade—with some pink and mauve to make it more wearable—is MAC Lipstick in Modesty. This muted colour is my most-used lipstick and is perfect for this time of year. I've been pairing it with the Rimmel ScandalEyes Eye Shadow Stick and it's been my staple look!

If you're more into pinks, then MAC Lipstick in Syrup is a purple-toned pink that would look great with the Lancôme Blush Subtil in Aplum. This is a Lustre formulation, so it's sheer; I find it looks different depending on how pigmented your lips are.

9. Switch to a Vampy Nail Colour

OPI French Quarter For Your Thoughts and Essie Carry On

OPI Nail Lacquer in French Quarter For Your Thoughts and Essie Nail Polish in Carry On.

I've been loving two darker nail colours this fall. OPI Nail Lacquer in French Quarter For Your Thoughts is the perfect grey polish, not too light nor too dark, and it has a gorgeous cream formula that is opaque in two coats.

If I'm feeling a bit more daring, I go for Essie Nail Polish in Carry On. This is a dark burgundy-purple shade that is a nice departure from the typical berries, as the purple really comes out depending on the lighting. Definitely worth checking out!

10. Wear a Sexier Fragrance

Dior Hypnotic Poison

Dior Hypnotic Poison

Some people wear the same scent year-round, but I like to switch it up and wear something a little sexier in the fall that's not so fresh or citrusy.

I love Dior Hypnotic Poison because it's feminine, yet very bold. The vanilla and musk notes can be a little overpowering in the summer, but in the colder months, this perfume is gorgeous. The longer you wear this, the more it develops and the notes become more pronounced.

I hope you enjoyed seeing some of my favourite fall beauty products!
