My hatred for powder foundations goes way back.

I haven't worn one since the days of the Bare Minerals hysteria, which was what—almost 10 years ago, now? At the time, I wasn't a foundation wearer at all, so that Bare Minerals loose mineral stuff seemed like a neat idea. Until I realized it was making my skin look drier, my pores look bigger and all-around doing me no favours.

Since then, I've been firmly in the liquids camp, though I've also done my beauty editor due diligence and tested all the other powder foundations (both loose and pressed) that have crossed my desk over the years. None of them impressed me.

But now there's what I consider a "next-generation" powder foundation from Guerlain, and it changes everything.

Here she is, the new Lingerie de Peau Nude Powder Foundation:

Guerlain powder foundation

Guerlain's new, non-cakey powder foundation.

You'll notice it is gently used because when it arrived from the PR, I thought, "Surely there is NO WAY I'm gonna like this, so why bother photographing it first?"

Oopsie. I do like it. So never mind the worn-down area in the bottom right corner.

Guerlain claims this foundation acts like a second skin, fusing with your skin for an optimal distribution of pigment. It also contains hyaluronic acid, which help's retain the skin's moisture balance.

In my experience with this product, these things are true. If you rub it between your fingers, you'll also notice that it's very finely milled—more so than most powder makeup I've tested. This is really key with any powder product; the more fine it is, the more natural the finish on the skin, and the less chance of that dreaded cakey look.

In fact, you can barely even detect this stuff once it's on. I had to really build it to get this swatch to even show up:

Swatch of Guerlain Lingerie de Peau Nude Powder Foundation in 01 Pale Beige.

This is shade 01, Pale Beige, which is probably a fraction too light for my complexion, but I can just about get away with it in the winter. (Can't seem to find it online though, so check in store.) There are four other shades: 02 Beige Clair, 03 Beige Natural, 04 Beige Moyen and 12 Rose Clair. Sadly, nothing much for darker skin tones... what up, Guerlain? Some are saying it oxidizes after a few hours, but I haven't had that at all; the colour stays totally true on me.

I would describe the coverage as light to medium. It's not going to completely cover all your blemishes, and I'm fine with that. I don't recommend building it up in too many layers, as (like any powder) that's when it'll start to look too heavy/chalky. Technically, you're not supposed to put creams over powders, but I did that with concealer and blush and it was fine, so....

What is lovely about it is the very natural-looking effect, lack of dryness and the matte finish that lasts for several hours; compared to a liquid foundation, you should get quite a bit more time without a shiny T-zone.

If you have dry or flaky skin, I would still avoid this and all powder foundations, as they're always going to accentuate that no matter what. But I think this powder would be perfect for someone with combo-oily skin, who wants that soft matte finish and long-lasting results. Yes, even if you would normally give powder foundations a pass!
