Happy New Year, beauties! It's hard to believe 2014 has come and gone—but before we dive into 2015, please join me in a walk down memory lane, looking back at the 20 biggest stories on this blog over the last 12 months.
(Note: This data is according to Google Analytics—disregard the social share counts on each post. After Beauty Editor's big redesign in September, they all went completely wonky!)
No surprise, the Celebrity category totally dominates this year (that IS one of my favourite things to write about, after all); the ever-controversial Before and Afters take up a lot of the spots, as well as the popular red carpet beauty reports. (Get ready: we're just days away from a brand new awards season. Woohoo!) Hair tips, product reviews and beauty nutritional information (another fave topic of mine) round out the list.
I would love to hear about what kinds of stories you love and want to read MORE of—and which ones you don't! And as always, thank you so much for reading and commenting. Here's to a beautiful 2015!
20. Golden Globes 2014: Emma Watson's Pink Lips and Sleek Chignon
My girl Emma was a early favourite for one of the best looks of the year, at last January's Golden Globes. I'm still blown away by Kate Lee's incredible, seamless makeup job, and this post outlines exactly what she used.
19. How to Add Highlights to Light Brown Hair at Home
Thomas is Beauty Editor's resident home hair colour guru, and his tutorials really killed it this year. Here, he explains exactly how to add subtle, tone-on-tone highlights in light brown hair (a la Karlie Kloss), the DIY way.
18. Are Polyunsaturated Oils the Real Cause of Skin Aging?
It is my personal belief that diet is a HUGE factor in skin aging, far more so than whatever we use topically. This post explains enemy number one as far as I'm concerned: polyunsaturated oils or "PUFAs".
17. The Best (and Worst) Bangs for Long Face Shapes
After getting my own fringe cut, I was on a major bang kick in 2014, and did an entire series on "bangs for your face shape". Long (like Liv Tyler) was one of the most sought-out shapes for advice.
16. Grammys 2014: The Must-See Beauty Looks
The most important night in music, the Grammys, also turned out to be one of the most popular red carpet beauty reports. I'm still loving Sarah Hyland's strawberry-red lips and messy updo.
15. Chanel Les Beiges Now Comes in a Super-Sheer Fluid Foundation
When Chanel releases a new foundation, it's major. In this post, I reviewed the follow-up to the Les Beiges powder, this light-coverage liquid foundation. It's still a winner in my books!
14. Is Low Thyroid Causing Your "Hormonal" Acne?
Everyone thinks "female" hormones are the culprit behind acne. I say, check your thyroid status! This post was one of my favourites to write, and if you're suffering from breakouts, well worth a read.
13. Does Your Skin Need Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic acid is hot right now in skincare, but is it really the wonder ingredient it's being touted as? In this post, I cleared up some of the misconceptions about how it works, so you can decide.
12. Golden Globes 2014: The Must-See Beauty Looks
Emma Watson again! She was my top pick from all the celebrity beauty looks at the Golden Globes, and this red carpet report was the most popular one of 2014.
11. What Renée Zellweger Did to Her Face, According to Plastic Surgeons
Even though I did a Before and After on Renée Zellweger in 2013, it was her appearance at an ELLE event this fall that got everyone's tongues wagging. I revisited things for this post, finding out from top docs exactly what happened.
10. My 6-Month Trial of Viviscal
Katrina used the hair supplement Viviscal for six months, and her the pre- and pos-trial photos are SO dramatic. Seriously, if you haven't seen them, go there now and be amazed.
9. Ivanka Trump, Before and After
Wait—what? Ivanka was a reader Before and After request and I have no idea why this post did so well. Maybe people were expecting analysis of her (reportedly fake) boobs?
8. Christina Hendricks, Before and After
Okay, this one, I do get. (People were inquiring about her boobs, haha.) That part I have no idea about, but I am fairly certain that her famous red hair is usually a wig. Read it and weep.
7. Zooey Deschanel, Before and After
During awards season, word on the street was that Zooey looked suddenly... different. I examined the photo evidence, and it seems like her nose was subtly refined some time ago.
6. Vladimir Putin, Before and After
Another "why is this here?" post. In the spirit of 2014's Sochi Olympics, I made the Russian president the subject of a Before and After, because it's not just celebs who dabble in plastic surgery... apparently politicians do, too!
5. Nicole Kidman, Before and After
Nicole is like the OG of celebrity Before and After subjects, so it makes sense that she's right up here. The weird thing is, even though she gets the most flak, her interventions are more subtle than many of the others.
4. How to Add Highlights to Dark Brown Hair at Home
Another great home hair colour tutorial from Thomas; this one is tailored to dark brunettes who want some Mila Kunis-esque dimenson on a budget.
3. The Best (and Worst) Bangs for Round Face Shapes
I had a feeling that round would be the most-read shape in the best bangs series, and it was! As Ginnifer Goodwin demonstrates, this shape can have a lot of fun with a fringe.
2. How I Dyed My Brown Hair Blonde at Home
The number one hair post in 2014 was yet another one from Thomas—this time, documenting how he went from his natural brunette hair colour to this medium blonde, at home.
1. Angelina Jolie, Before and After
And here you have it, the most popular post in 2014 was all about Ange! I am not surprised—despite the hoopla over Renée, Angelina is permanent A-list and always in the news. As the good doctor said, it's down to great genes... and a great plastic surgeon.
Have Your Say
Which of these posts was YOUR fave? And what would you like to see more of (or less of) on Beauty Editor in 2015?
