Maybe it's because the skin was exceptionally glowy on the Producers Guild Awards red carpet, or maybe it's because we were spoiled for sheer volume of celebs at the Golden Globes. Either way, I was kinda underwhelmed by the beauty vibe at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, a.k.a. the SAGs, held Sunday night. Let me know if you agree?
Here are all the hair and makeup looks:
Is there any beauty look that Emma can't do? I think not—even though the brows are admittedly a bit dodgy here. I love the ultra-bright, creamy red lips; her tiny freckles; the perfectly-emphasized eyes; and the sleek, side-parted low ponytail. I can see how this called for stronger arches, and it's actually not a bad effort (i.e. they're still soft, not angular)... but I just don't like to see obvious brow pencil.
The lipstick is new Revlon Ultra HD in Gladiolus, and she is wearing Chanel Vitalumière Aqua foundation, with Les Beiges in 10 and 20 as powder and (I think?) blush. The eyeshadow is Chanel Mirage (a taupe), with Chanel volume mascara and Revlon black eyeliner.
Keira's been wearing her hair down so far this awards season... and I think I prefer it that way, or even in a bob. All the better to focus on her amazing makeup, right? Here, I'm a bit distracted by the loose waves, which I didn't realize had grown so long. Anyway! The smoky eyes and nude lips are spectacular. Unlike 90 percent of people we see out of Hollywood, there are no visible lines in this makeup—on eyes OR lips. The seamless diffusion of colour is simply amazing.
Like Emma, Keira is wearing Chanel Vitalumière Aqua foundation, with Chanel Cheeky (cream) and Le Jardin (powder) blushes on the cheeks. The smoky eye—slate grey with brown for warmth—was created with Chanel Quadra Eyeshadows in Prélude and Tissé Mademoiselle, wetting the shadow to use it as eyeliner as well. No lip liner, just Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Satisfaction.
Lupita brought the glow to this red carpet—just stop and admire her skin for a minute, because it's crazy-radiant. I really like that this updo is showing it off, and thank goodness her makeup is more sophisticated than the pink 'n purple combo she wore to the Globes. The sheer red lips and touch of gold on the lids really compliment her dress without feeling overdone.
Wow, Sofia has come a long way! Remember how she always used to be over-styled, and over-tanned? With weirdly heavy lipstick? Now, everything has significantly lightened up—simple flat-ironed hair, glossy red lips and a more natural skin texture. Speaking of skin, she does look like she might've had a visit with the dermatologist's needle... but hey, I'm not judging. This is probably the best I've seen her look on a red carpet in all these years.
Jennifer Aniston, SAG Awards 2015
Jen! How did the woman with the best hair in Hollywood end up with this?! It's not the style I'm talking about (the style is good). It's the colour. We've gone from the most covetable honey blonde—so covetable that Thomas used it for his "how to go blonde at home" tutorial—to this weirdly frosty greyish-greenish hue. It matches her dress perfectly, which I suspect wasn't the intention. Let's pray it's the lighting or my hairdreams will be crushed. At least her skin and makeup are fairly on point (I just don't like the lip liner), proving again that the Globes texture was an anomaly.
I always love Rashida's effortlessness on the red carpet, and this look is no exception. The black-rimmed eyes and matte red lips dress her up, while the bangs and low ponytail make it a bit casual. The foundation seems a little heavy on the cheeks, but at least you can still see her cute freckles.

This isn't bad or anything, but I'd love to see Emmy use a lighter hand with her eye makeup. I feel like it's always quite heavy, with black in the waterlines. Otherwise, skin and brows looks gorge.
She is wearing Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips liner trio in Nude Eyes, with Burt's Bees Hawaiian Smolder Lip Crayon enhancing her pout.
Well, it's much better than what we saw from Kaley at the People's Choice Awards. I'm starting to think there WAS a lighting issue, because just like Jen Aniston, her hair colour seems off. (See? Every red carpet should use pink backdrops like Victoria's Secret. Way more flattering.) Makeup-wise, I quite like Kaley's thick sweep of black liner and the soft brown shadow. But, the foundation is very heavy and I have a pet peeve with this goopy lip gloss texture.
Kaley is wearing two foundations, so that might explain the skin. Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Perfectly Satin and Flawless Future Perfectly Nude. The eyeshadows are also Arden (Shimmering Copper, Spice and Smolder), as are the blushes (again, two—Nectar and Honey). The lip colour is Elizabeth Arden Matte Nude layered under Latte Lip Gloss.
It's fun to see Rosamund mixing things up with a pop of colour—orange colour—on the mouth. You would think pinky shades would work better with her fair complexion, but as you can see, it's all about how you handle the colour. With barely any blush or eye makeup, this doesn't overwhelm her, in fact, it really brightens her skin. I love the hair also; great texture yet still chic.
Sarah must REALLY like frosty white highlighter at the inner corners of her eyes, because we've sure been seeing a lot of it lately. (See: the People's Choice Awards for a refresher.) At least the brows are great and contouring isn't as strong this time—I always feel like she's such a pretty girl, why is her makeup so unnecessarily heavy? The updo is also super-cute on her, if not the extreme highlights.
Okay, there's definitely a lighting problem at the SAGs because Claire's hair colour went from this gorgeousness to what you see here—it now looks almost too light for her skin tone. But what the lighting has done for her hair is made up in the skin department; her complexion looks fresher than normal, with minimal foundation. What I'm not sure about, at least close-up, is the black eyeliner. The line is a bit too heavy underneath the eyes, right? But then again, it does make 'em pop without the copious amounts of eyeshadow she wore to the Globes.
Is Sophia trying to smize at us? Or maybe it's just the heavy plum eyeshadow that's making me slightly uncomfortable. On the whole, I dig the Old Hollywood vibe she's going for. The wavy faux bob is lovely, and I do like the idea of a non-traditional colour on the lids. It's just perhaps a touch too dark/angular? Compare to Keira's eyeshadow, where the diffusion is bang on. Keep in mind, I do tend to be biased towards fresher-faced makeup.
Ariel looks super-pretty here—well, doesn't she always? I actually don't mind the lashes, as they're nicely defined and a bit chunky, making them the focus of the entire look. Her skin is perfect, no surprise for a 16-year-old, and I like the soft brows, freckles and peachy tones on lips and cheeks.
Julianne is following the redhead playbook here—flattering her hair colour with a green dress and purple tones in her makeup. As per usual, she looks great; I especially love her hairstyle this time, softly waved, centre-parted and tucked behind both ears. The makeup is very similar to what we saw at the Critics' Choice Awards, with a stronger emphasis on the eyes. I wouldn't change anything.
Rosamund wasn't the only orangey lipstick-wearing blonde on this red carpet; Laura did almost exactly the same look, complete with textured hair, too (except hers in a centre part). And no surprise, it looks just as pretty here—sooo much better than the heavy smoky eyes and updo Laura wore to the Globes.
The lipstick is Avon Poppy Love and the matching tone blush is Avon Coral Radiance. On the eyes, she is wearing cult classic Stila Kitten shadow with the Avon Mocha Latte quad. Foundation is Chanel Perfection Lumière.
Naomi, you know I love you, but girl—Whitestrips are your friend. (Probably the lighting yet again is bringing out the yellow as well.) But everything else here is just about perfect. The curled-under lob in a deep side part really flatters her, and I like the understated makeup. She's got a great strong brow going on, good definition on the lashes and understated pinky-nude lips.
The lipstick, BTW, is Elizabeth Arden Pale Petal.
Maria is channelling Kim Kardashian a bit, huh? Or at least this facial expression, the opaque nude lip gloss and the contoured cheeks are giving me those vibes. I think this look is halfway there—I do like the straight, centre-parted hair, the neutral makeup palette and the subtle eyes. I just don't like the heavy contouring or the goopy lips. But you knew I'd say that.
Maisie makes her Beauty Editor debut and oooh, doesn't she have good brows? I like that she let them frame her face, leaving the eye makeup low-key and accenting with a deep berry lip. Too bad the hair is a bit bridal.
Sophie's another Beauty Editor red carpet newbie, and my goodness, does she not have the most magnificent hair?! All that time I was a redhead, this is the colour I dreamed of. I've got no major issues with her makeup, except maybe her brows need a bit more filling on the tails, and I'd rather see a matte pinky lip instead of glossed.
Remember the SAG Awards when Natalie debuted a half-shaved head? I'm not sure what the exact status is now, but it looks like that part is growing out nicely. As for this style, I actually like the casualness of the waves and how they're pinned up at the top. Her makeup is super-soft, with quite mesmerizing smoky eyes done in bronze. I feel like she needs just a touch more definition, though. Maybe stronger brows?
Natalie is wearing makeup artist fave Armani Luminous Silk Foundation. On the eyes, Charlotte Tilbury's Vintage Vamp palette with Lancôme Filigree eyeshadow for a highlight and L'Oréal Voluminous mascara. The lipstick is MAC Pink Plaid.
It's not the best quality close-up of Reese, but I think we can still get the gist of her makeup—which I think is just gorgeous. At the Producers Guild Awards, the charcoal smoky eyes made her look really tired. Here, the lighter, plummier colour palette is so much more flattering, as is having less eyeshadow under the eyes. We don't usually see her in a berry lip, but that and the brighter blush really liven up her skin against the white dress. And I love how the ponytail keeps it all from being too formal.
She is wearing Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation in Cream Ivory, with Kjaer Weis Lovely Blush on the cheeks. The eyeshadows are Laura Mercier Truffle and Blaze (actually a brown cream blush). Her lip colour is a mix of Laura Mercier Orchid Pink and Vermillion Red, with Black Cherry gloss on top.
Is Emilia pregnant or is it just this dress? Either way, what a stunner—I've missed her face since the SAG Awards last year. I love what she's doing here: soft brown eyeshadow all the way up to her beautiful brows, natural lashes, satiny pink lips and zero detectable blush. The hair is quite interesting as well. Smooth and straight, but it looks like it was pinned underneath to stay off her face.
Now, this is surprising. Anyone who has watched 'Downton Abbey' will know Joanne—but how can she go from looking appropriately early 1900s there to having this Barbie-like blonde hair? Do they let her dye it in the off season? Or maybe it's that dang lighting problem messing with us again. Either way, I think she can do better with her styling. The powdery, slightly orangey skin texture is unfortunate, and her look just overall seems a little dated (possibly the heavy under-eye liner?). At least her lips are bare and matte, though.
