I know some people swear by lash extensions. And hey, if I was a celebrity, I'd probably have 'em done on the reg. The #wokeuplikethis effect, and never having to apply mascara, are amazing benefits indeed. Plus, you know how I loathe false lashes, and extensions are usually way more natural-looking than that.
Problem is, they're expensive (expect to pay $150+). And you have to lie there for two hours while they fiddle to get 'em on. I've got things to do! Places to go! Blogs to write!
These are the reasons why the concept behind Physicians Formula's Lash Extension Kit is very, very appealing to me.
Essentially, it is this: the look of lash extensions, in two minutes from the comfort of your own home, and for under $20. Appealing, right?
This is what you get in the kit:
- The Mascara: The Mascara is actually infused with Physicians Formula's lash-boosting peptide technology (the same stuff that's in their Lash Boosting Eyeliner). That means the longer you use this kit, the more likely you'll have naturally longer lashes, since the peptide helps condition them to grow long and strong. (I'm already on Latisse, but I can verify that this technology does work—I've seen incredible results on people who used the eyeliner.)
- The Fibers: I was surprised to find out that the Fibers are all-natural. They're made primarily from cellulose, with panthenol and vitamin E. And their colourants are derived from artichoke and basil! Note that the fibres are black, not white, which is a key benefit versus many other two-step lash-building systems.
Side note: You might be familiar with the whole fiber thing already, as Tarte has its Best in Faux Lash Extending Fibers and Too Faced makes the Better Than False Lashes Extreme! kit. But... the Physicians Formula Lash Extension Kit is way cheaper, and widely available. So there.
Here's how to use it. For best results, I recommend working on one eye at a time!
Step 1: Apply Mascara
Curl your lashes first, but I'd skip any eyeshadow, as there's a good chance you might get some mascara on your lids in this process. (I usually do regardless, since I like to press it right in at the roots.)
Coat the upper lashes only on both the front and back sides. Then go through the rest of the steps on the same eye instead of jumping back and forth. That way, the Mascara stays wet while you move as quickly as possible to the next step...
Step 2: Coat Wet Lashes in Fibers
Make sure you tap off the excess from the wand to prevent any stray bits landing all over your cheeks, or worse, in your eyes. This is the part where you really want to take extra care, especially if you wear contacts or have sensitive eyes. If you're only doing one eye and not rushing, it's much easier.
I find it works best to hold the wand vertically instead of horizontally, and wiggle it back and forth all over the lashes, instead of brushing it through. Yes, you will still get some fallout, but you can easily sweep it away with a fluffy brush when you're done. I've had no issues at all with the Fibers sticking to my makeup.
Step 3: Re-Apply Mascara
Step 4: Repeat Steps 2 and 3
I found just one round didn't give me enough of a "wow" factor versus a normal volumizing mascara, so I suggest going back for at least one more layer of Fibers and Mascara. That is when the magic happens, people!
When you're done, finish off your lower lashes with regular mascara.
Now you're good to go!
Here's what they look like on me:
I don't know if the Physicians Formula Lash Extension Kit should technically be called "extensions," because it's not so much making lashes longer, but THICKER.
Which is exactly what I'm looking for. It's not length that makes your eyes pop—it's having a thick, dark fringe, especially close to the roots, and that's what this product can give you. It also does so without the clumping that is my main gripe with normal volumizing mascara formulas!
The downsides of this Kit are that it's a little messy, and it's more time-consuming to apply versus regular mascara. But it's way quicker than professional extensions, and for the price and the dramatic results, I'm more than willing to work with it!
Have you tried this lash extension kit?
