Matte, highly pigmented and 100 percent natural!
Burt's Bees Lip Crayon

The new Burt's Bees Lip Crayons.

Finally, there's a lip crayon option for those of us into more natural beauty products!

And let me tell you—these newbies from Burt's Bees are so good, you'll probably fall in love with them even if you're not a beauty hippie like I am. They're creamy and semi-matte with rich opaque pigment, gorgeous colours and a stupidly cheap price at the drugstore ($10 each).

Basically my thoughts were, "Where have these been all my life?" (The answer: They've just arrived in Canada this spring, and have been out in the U.S. for a little while longer.)

There are six shades in total, and check out this packaging! A honeycomb pattern on the cap... so adorbs.

The shades are really cool, too, and unlike anything I've seen in other lip collections. Ranging from the perfect pinky-beige nude to a bold berry red, they remind me of colours you'd see in nature. Which I think was the point, since they're all named for sites in the U.S. known for their natural beauty, such as Napa Valley and Hawaii.

And that's what makes them universally flattering as well. Since they're inspired by nature, there's nothing unnaturally cool nor warm, so they should all work no matter what your skin tone. Guaranteed you'll fall in love with at least one!

Also know that the finish is completely opaque, not sheer, so they will cancel out most of your natural lip colour—the effect I think most of us want in a lip crayon, right?

Of course, the 100 percent natural ingredients are a major selling point. Here's what's in them:

Ingredients / Ingrédients: ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, caprylic/capric triglyceride, simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, candelilla cera (euphorbia cerifera wax, cire de candelilla), cera alba (beeswax, cire d'abeille), cera carnauba, (copernicia cerifera wax, cire de carnauba), butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter, hydrogenated vegetable oil, aleurites moluccana seed oil*, olea europaea (olive) fruit oil, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, rosmarinus officinalis, (rosemary) leaf extract, tocopherol, lecithin, silica, glycine soja (soybean) oil. +/- (May contain / Peut contenir): CI 77891 (titanium dioxide), CI 77019 (mica), CI 75470 (carmine), CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499 (iron oxides) *kendi oil

Since these are on the matte side, I recommend applying a matte lip balm underneath to prime your lips first. (I like L'Occitane Shea Butter.) Otherwise, the pigment does collect in your lip lines after a while, and can accentuate flakes and dryness. But I wouldn't say they're drying, especially compared to most mattes I've tried.

Here's a colour comparison:

And here's a closer look at each shade:

Sedona Sands

Sedona Sands is a nude with pink undertones, and my goodness is it ever a great nude! (You know how hard those are to find.) This shall be my new go-to for when I need a soft lip to pair with a bolder eye. I love that it hides my natural lip colour, which is darker, and it's got enough pink in it to ensure I'm not washed out.

Carolina Coast

Carolina Coast is a cool-toned pink that's still quite soft—so just stepping things up a notch from the nude without being too bold about it. This isn't a shade you see too often, and I'm really enjoying the contrast of a cool lip with the rest of my makeup warm.

Niagara Overlook

Niagara Overlook is hands down my favourite in this whole lineup. It's a warm peachy-pink, and surprisingly, I didn't have anything like it in my extensive collection (I think most shades like this are too sheer?). Since this one hides your natural lip colour, you get more impact, but the colour is still fairly subdued. Love!

Hawaiian Smolder

Hawaiian Smolder is more of a traditional deep pink—but not quite a hot pink, as it's still a bit muted and not too cool-toned. It's super-flattering and much easier to wear than some of those look-at-me fuchsias of the last few years.

Redwood Forest

Redwood Forest is another really unique shade, which I'd describe as soft brownish-red. Definitely in the marsala family, but much subtler and more wearable. It's probably the one I'd reach for the least often (since I am unexciting), but I do find it very pretty in a modern '90s way.

Napa Vineyard

Napa Vineyard is the most vibrant of the bunch, a beautiful rich berry red. Because it's so pigmented, it's also the trickiest to apply with the chubby pencil... maybe you could use a lip brush and get a more precise result than this. As you can see, it's also annoyingly bleeding on my upper lip, which I swear has never happened with another lip colour! So, not sure what that's about. I'd have to wear this one with an invisible lip liner

The Bottom Line

For $10, what more could you ask for? Not to be an enabler, but you kind of need more than one shade here. I've had at least one in my handbag at all times for the last few weeks. So much love for these!
