An unexpectedly cool launch from the bath and body emporium.

Time for some #realtalk. When it comes to makeup, specifically lip and cheek prodz, and even more specifically, matte lip and cheek prodz, I'll bet that The Body Shop is one of the last places to come to mind.

And yet they've just come out with something you'd never expect to see from the land of shower gel and body butter....

Meet the new Lip & Cheek Velvet Sticks:

The Body Shop's new Lip & Cheek Velvet Sticks.

I KNOW.

When I first heard about them, the beauty tingles came over me and I got really excited. I can never resist a good multi-tasker, especially a budget-friendly one (these are $15 a pop). And since Target has gone bye-bye in Canada, I desperately need a replacement for my beloved Sonia Kashuk Dewy Luxe.

These guys are a little different, because they're sticks, not stains. And they're really chubby—chubbier than your average lip crayon, in fact.

Big fat chubby crayons for your lips and cheeks.

As the name would indicate, you can use 'em on lips AND cheeks, which is so handy—they'd be a perfect purse product or office desk drawer stash.

And I repeat, the finish is matte. (I still can't believe The Body Shop is doing matte.) Well, except for one of them, which is shimmery but not shiny. Despite the matte texture, they go on very smooth, not drying at all, and the colour payoff is really decent.

Here are the six shades:

Here's how they look on the lips:

10 Nude

This shade, 10 Nude, is just a great matte nude. It's not too light or chalky, and has a flattering pinky-beige tone that should suit a lot of complexions. I actually prefer this one on my cheeks as a nude blush... on me it didn't seem different enough to my bare lip tone to make that much of a difference.

20 Pink

I love 20 Pink; it's my second favourite shade in this line. The colour is that playful mid candy pink that's been so hard to find over the last few years. It's definitely a cooler tone, so gives an interesting contrast as a lipstick on warm or neutral skin, without being as strong as a fuchsia. Should be a fun one for summer! On the cheeks, it reads a bit more subtly for me.

30 Bronze

I would describe 30 Bronze as the "NARS Orgasm" of this line. It's got the exact same peachy-pink base with quite a bit of shimmer. Because of that texture, it's probably my least favourite for the lips and cheeks—I avoid shimmer like plague—although the colour is for sure universally flattering.

35 Coral

With a name like 35 Coral, I was expecting a lot more punch. Instead, what you get is a very "your lips, only better" shade... I suspect because this one lets more of your natural lip tone peek through. It's still nice as a stained, muted look, just not what I was expecting. I probably prefer this one on the cheeks for a bolder blush statement, as it gives you an amazing outdoorsy flush.

40 Red

By far the best shade in this whole lineup is 40 Red. It's perfect! I adore the colour, a slightly pinky red, and the velvety finish. It's too bold for me on the cheeks, but as replacement for red lipstick, I'm in love.

And turns out, Katrina is, too! We have beauty ESP with each other, and both fell in love with this shade at the exact same time. Here's what she has to say about 40 Red:

"This is the closest dupe I've ever found for my beloved Lobello Cherry Lipbalm. On my lips, it's the perfect balance between red and pink—a little more strawberry than cherry. The velvety-matte texture looks so natural, like I've been snacking on berries (or more likely, pink popsicles). OBSESSED!"

Universal Shade

The Universal Shade looks black in the tube, but on your lips is one of those transforming colours that turns into a unique shade depending on your skin's pH level. On me it becomes a deep berry stain with a slight purplish tinge. I found it looked more subtle on the cheeks, but if you're into the new purple lips trend, this would be great way to try it out.
