The bestselling Daily Moisturizing Lotion now has a sister... and she's even better.

Last week, Simone shared a body lotion love with you. This week, it's my turn.

(Why so much body lotion talk? End of April is reaching the critical point in post-winter skin rescue urgency. Dry legs need HALP!)

Now, I happen to be quite picky with the products I'll put on my body. Have I shared my basic skin safety philosophy with you? It's based on surface area. I don't stress too much about what ingredients go on my face, but I do worry about my body, since I'm using and absorbing so much more there. Just to cover one thigh is, like, a week's face moisturizer applications! (Especially MY thighs.)

So I wouldn't use that Vaseline body serum that Simone talked about, because it's high in petroleum—a huge skin no-no in my books. Here's a more in-depth article on that, but the gist of it is: we don't metabolize it. So little particles of petroleum from your body lotion could theoretically be floating around inside of you doing God knows what, 'til the end of time. I also try to avoid PUFA oils such as soybean, sunflower, almond, etc., as they oxidize and are pro-aging. More about that here.

As you might imagine, it's damn hard to find a body lotion that meets these criteria.

Or is it? Because whaddaya know, Aveeno just came out with a new version of the popular Daily Moisturizing Lotion, and it's got one of the better ingredients lists I've seen from a mainstream mega-brand.

It's called Daily Moisturizing Lotion Sheer Hydration:

Aveeno Sheer Hydration

New Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion Sheer Hydration.

Keywords: sheer, hydration. This is a sister to—not a replacement for—the original Daily Moisturizing Lotion, or "DML" as they call it. It's lighter in texture and feel, and it absorbs more quickly. Y'know... it's sheer.

But it still hydrates great. Maybe even better now. Like the original, the hydration lasts for a full 24 hours, and here's what is doing that:

Aveeno Sheer Hydration

The ingredients in new Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion Sheer Hydration.

Water (eau), Dicaprylyl Ether, Glycerin, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Stearic Acid, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Flour, Cetyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Phenoxyethanol, Dimethicone, Caprylyl Glycol, Carbomer, Ceteareth-20, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Citrate, Citric Acid.

The good news first. Unlike DML, there's no junky petroleum here, woo! And no weird oils. You'll also recognize glycerin and oat kernel flour as good-for-your-skin ingredients. Dicaprylyl ether, caprylic/capric triglyceride and caprylyl glycol are all low-toxicity skin conditioning agents; stearic acid is a natural fatty acid; and cetyl and cetearyl alcohols are non-drying fatty alcohols. Also safe: carbomer to stabilize, sodium citrate to adjust the pH and citric acid to help skin cell turnover.

Now the stuff I don't like so much. Phenoxyethanol is a preservative that has a similar safety profile to methylparabens—probably chosen because people hate seeing that word! I don't love that dimethicone's in here either, but at least it's near the bottom of the list; same with ceteareth-20 (contamination concerns), sodium hydroxide (another word for lye).

But all in all I think it's a pretty okay ingredients list, considering this is a cheap drugstore product and it's usually a minefield out there!

I also love the convenience of the pump:

And here's a quick look at the texture.

Looks thick, but really isn't when you start spreading. If you're looking for an affordable body lotion without the usual greasy feel, then Sheer Hydration should definitely be on your radar!
