Q: Hej, my name is Ann-Kathrin and I just turned 25. I'm an aspiring classical and musical theatre singer. I have very fine hair, but a lot of it. It has almost no structure or volume to it, and I have to wash it pretty frequently.

In the past, I've tried a variety of cuts: short, pixie, straight bangs, longer angular bangs, short bob, long bob, shoulder-length, very long, layers, no layers. It's the same with colour: from platinum blonde to black (and also pink and some kind of purple for a short while), and of course, various shades of red.

Ann-Kathrin had a version of Michelle Williams' famous short haircut.

For the last five years, my hair was a version of the "Michelle Williams Life Cut"—same colour also—until a year ago, when I gradually started going darker, so I wouldn't have to get the roots touched up all the time. Because of budgetary reasons, I'm currently growing out that cut, so in the front, my hair is almost chin-length, but in the back it's still pretty short. The colour is kind of a dark strawberry blonde, almost my natural colour (which is the ashiest dark blonde on the planet), but with a lot more warmth to it.

Ann-Kathrin's current longer length and darker colour.

My plan was to grow out what's left of my current cut without doing anything to it, and then to get it all cut to one length when it's long enough to tie back. Then, I would let it grow further until I can braid it and/or put it up in a proper bun for ballet. But I'm SO worried that it won't look good with my fine hair and the shape of my face.

I'm also at a loss as to what to do with the colour because sadly, I don't have the money to get it coloured often—so maybe I need a colour I could fix up myself?

Your advice would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you! — Ann-Kathrin

Ann-Kathrin isn't sure a longer length will suit her fine hair.

A: Hello Ann-Kathrin, thank you for your request for my advice about your hair...

You are obviously accomplished at doing your hair and makeup. With your gorgeous skin and neutral natural colour, you can wear just about any colour or cut.

Here is what I feel you should do for a new summer hairstyle:

Ash blonde bob with blonde colour slices

Choppy ash blonde bob with blonde colour slices.

Random slices of hair that are coloured (but not all the way to the root) will add to this tousled, naive cut.

The colour slices you could easily do with a friend. Here is a YouTube video I found that demonstrates how to do this particular style of colouring:

You could achieve this using colour or bleach. If you choose a box colour, use the developer they supply you with. If you use bleach, I would suggest a 10 volume developer.

If you want to ease into this concept and want a little rehearsal run, then do a small slice on an underneath section. That way, if you don't like the colour, you can pick a new one before doing your whole head.

I hope this finds you well and this information is useful. Have fun!
