As Canadians, we appreciate the beach far more than the average vacation-goer.
After suffering through the longest, bleakest, snowiest winters, is anything better than feeling the sun on your skin and the sand between your toes, and then cooling off in the salty ocean?
I think not—the only catch is it takes a bit of beauty planning. Because sunburnt skin; rough, tough feet; and dry, frizzy hair aren't cute.
Luckily, Shoppers Drug Mart has got us covered (literally!). With more than 1,200 locations across Canada, they're a one-stop shop for all things beach beauty, including these essentials:
Read on for my picks for a day at the beach (and find out why they're Beauty Editor-approved):
1. An Electronic Foot File
Yes, people notice when your feet are grody. Sorry. Plus, how are you going to show off your new neon pedi when people are distracted by icky dry toes?
As you may know, I have a bit of an obsession with these foot gadgety things, which slough away built-up hard, dead skin on your soles, heels and toes via an electronically rotating file. You just pass it over your problem spots (not using it on wet skin or in the same area for more than three to four seconds at a time), and it's MAGIC. Within minutes, the roughness is gone, replaced by silky-smooth feet.
2. A Non-Greasy Face Sunscreen
I don't need to tell you that excessive sun exposure can lead to sun damage, pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles and sagging—right? You already know all that.
But what you might not be doing is using a different sunscreen on your face than your body. I like having separate ones, because the latest face formulas are super-light, fast-absorbing, non-pore-clogging and non-greasy. (I mean, you never know who's going to be over on the next towel.) You'll need minimum SPF 30, with broad-spectrum UVB and UVB protection.
3. A Water-Resistant Body Sunscreen
Obviously, a great-quality body sunscreen is also key! Especially one that's water-resistant, since you'll probably be swimming... or sweating.
This one gives you broad-spectrum SPF 50+ protection for up to 80 minutes, even if you get wet. It's very thin and fluid, so spreading it on is super-easy; it's also quick-absorbing and fragrance-free, so you can't even tell you're wearing it (which is the way SPF should be!).
4. Soothing Aloe Vera Gel
Even if you're diligent about your sunscreen, skin can always use a bit of TLC after a day at the beach. Enter a big ol' bottle of aloe vera gel, with a handy pump.
As you know, juice from the aloe vera plant is renowned for its healing properties. In this handy gel format, it cools, soothes and replenishes lost moisture from the drying effects of the sun. Every household needs a supply of aloe vera, in my opinion!
5. A Beach Waving Spray
Whether you're at the beach or in the city, you know what never goes out of style? Beach waves, of course!
And you don't need to dry your hair out with saltwater to get 'em. Flip your hair over and mist it through with this nourishing spray to add instant texture a la Gisele. It's oil-based, and yet it doesn't make your hair oily—just touchable and full-bodied. Love!
