Q: Hi Bill! I have thick, dark brown hair. It's straight, but gets a bit wavy during the day. The only problem I have is that my hair is very dry, especially the ends.
I feel like long hair is the only hairstyle that suits me, because of my face shape and chubby cheeks, but this is so boring. I never curl or straighten my hair, and would need something simple that doesn't require much styling. Do you think I should get a haircut? Or dye my lengths dark brown (my natural colour)? Would you recommend highlights?
I would like to get your professional expertise. Thank you very much in advance! — Sophia
A: Sophia, I see no chubby cheeks here...
When hair gets to this length—whether or not it has been coloured—the ends will be empty of pigment. This is the reason for your dry ends.
You can salvage some of the length by using colour or a gloss to fill the ends, plus a good conditioner. Another way to deal with dry ends is scissors.
Here is a great length for you if it is scissors your ends need. This cut also works with your natural texture.
With this length, I would stick with your natural colour—the darker colour gives this cut visual strength.
Here are couple of colour inspirations for your hair, if you choose to keep it long. Also, both of these next two photos are showing tapered and skinnier ends, which I like better for you.
Please note the play with the parts in these photos as well. They help add variety with long hair.
They also have fuller crowns and the hair is close to the forehead in the front.
I would love to see you cut your hair to the shorter length, get it super-healthy, then start colouring after that. You will always get better colour results on untreated hair.
