5 of the best natural and organic hair products

Picking up your hair products at the drugstore or hair salon may be the easiest choice—but is it the healthiest one?

Maybe not. Many mainstream hair products contain sodium laureth and sodium lauryl sulfates (SLS), skin irritants that also allow other chemicals to penetrate deep into the skin and bloodstream.

Then there's PVP/VA copolymer, a petroleum-derived chemical often found in hairsprays that may cause lung damage in sensitive people.

Some shampoos even contain dyes that are known carcinogens and are banned in the EU.

If you'd rather avoid potentially harmful ingredients like these ones, I've got five natural and organic hair products that should be on your radar:

Natural hair products

A few of the natural and organic hair products you can find at Petal & Post.

All are available at new online natural beauty store Petal & Post (more about them here), and even if you're not an eco-beauty junkie, I think you're going to love them.

Not only are they completely non-toxic, but I've also found them to deliver results that are the same—if not even better than—regular synthetic hair products. From a super-nourishing conditioner to a chemical-free dry shampoo, these products have earned a spot in my day-to-day beauty regimen.

Here's the lowdown on the five natural and organic hair products you need to know about:

Graydon All Over Soap + Shampoo

Graydon All Over Soap

Graydon All Over Soap + Shampoo.

Toronto-based Graydon makes one of the nicest (and more affordable) natural shampoo options. The All Over Soap + Shampoo is a translucent gel that can also be used as a face and body wash; on the hair, it gives a lightweight cleanse without any greasy residue to weigh you down. It's safe for colour-treated hair and has a refreshing botanical scent. Just be aware that with SLS-free products, you won't get a lather; let it sit on your scalp for a minute before your rinse, or double-cleanse.

Graydon Hair Smoothie

Another gorgeous Graydon product is this Hair Smoothie, which works as both a conditioner and a detangler. Creamy and pale green with a slightly peppery scent, it's not at all heavy—and yet, it leaves locks smooth, soft and silky in just one quick application. (You can leave it in for a few minutes for a more intense treatment.) Broccoli seed oil is the key ingredient, and on my dehydrated ends, it has worked better than anything with silicones!

Ingredients: Purified Water (Aqua), Vegetable Glycerin (Glycerol), Broccoli Seed Oil (Brassica Oleracea Italica), Sunflower Oil (Helianthis Annus), Cetyl Alcohol (Coconut Product), Stearyl Alcohol (Mixed Plant), Cetrimonium Chloride, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein (Glycine Soja), Olive Oil (Plea Europaea), Coconut Oil (Cocos Nucifera), Green Tea Extract (Camellia Sinensis), Chlorophyll (Chlorophyllin), In A Blend Of Pure Essential Oils, Vitamin E (Mixed Tocopherols)

Rare El'ements Marula Cocktail Leave-In Mist

There's no silicone in the Marula Cocktail Leave-In Mist from Rare El'ements either; instead, this conditioning and shine spray uses marula, baobab, coconut and palm oils. It sounds like it would be heavy and greasy, but it's really not—even fine-haired types like me can use it throughout the day to tame frizz, add shape and style, and smooth dry ends. Because the oils actually penetrate the hair shaft, it also gives you a deep conditioning treatment. I'd been searching for a long time for an all-natural leave-in mist, and finally, I found a great one!

Ingredients: Coco Caprylate/Caprate, Coconut Alkanes (Coconut, Palm Kernel Oil), Isoamyl Cocoate (Sugar Beets & Coco Nut Oil), Sclerocaryl Birrea (Marula) Seed Oil, Aleurites Digitata (Baobab) Seed Oil, Crambe Abyssinica (Abyssinian) Seed Oil Pelargonium Graveolens (Geranium), Aniba Roseaeodora (Rosewood), Citrus Bergamia (Bergamot) Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract.

Leaves of Trees Orange Blossom Argan Oil

Leaves of Trees Orange Blossom Argan Oil

Leaves of Trees Orange Blossom Argan Oil.

It's no secret that argan oil makes an amazing, deep-penetrating hair moisturizer, thanks to its high levels of vitamin E, phenols, pro-vitamin A, squalene and fatty acids. The kind in this Orange Blossom Argan Oil from Leaves of Trees is certified organic and cold-pressed by hand in a women's cooperative in Morocco, where it takes one woman 20 hours to produce just one litre of oil. There are just two ingredients in here, and the other one is orange blossom oil, which gives this the most addictive scent! Just one drop instantly smooths dry ends and flyaways, and makes your hair smell absolutely incredible.

Tabitha James Kraan Dry Shampoo

Tabitha James Kraan Organic Dry Shampoo

Tabitha James Kraan Organic Dry Shampoo For Fair Hair.

Finally, an alternative to commercial dry shampoos exists with the 100 percent natural Dry Shampoo For Fair Hair and Dry Shampoo For Dark Hair from British eco-luxury hair care brand, Tabitha James Kraan. Instead of a spray, these are powders that you simply sprinkle into your roots to absorb oil, add volume and soothe an itchy scalp. The scent is to die for, and your hair is left feeling cleaner and truly refreshed. I love that it comes in two shades, so you don't have to worry about white roots!
