InStyle magazine held the first-ever InStyle Awards in Los Angeles last week, to honour the actors and artists whose style defines the red carpet, and the image makers behind the scenes. It was definitely an interesting event for beauty!

Here are all the night's hair and makeup looks:

Diane Kruger

This is why we love Diane. She knows EXACTLY what works best for her: smooth, classic, just slightly bendy waves pinned behind one ear. Taupe shadow up to the brows, with defined (never fake) black lashes and black upper waterlines. Peachy-pink blush, and a cool-toned pink mouth to add contrast to the whole thing. Perfekt!

Miranda Kerr

This looks like the same lipstick Miranda wore to the ELLE Women in Hollywood Awards, and I don't mind at all—it's amazing on her. Once again, it brings out her blue eyes, and she paired it with a similarly toned blush. What's different this time around is the eyeshadow, a shimmering gold metallic, and the high bun. Oh gosh, how cute is this bun?! She looks like a ballerina dressed up for a night out.

Miranda is wearing: 1. Illuminating primer | 2. Foundation in 5 Medium | 3. Concealer | 4. Brow pencil in Cara D | 5. Eyeshadow in Jean (all over lids) | 6. Eyeshadow in Marie Antoinette (along lash lines) | 7. Eyeliner in Barbarella Brown | 8. Mascara in Glossy Black | 9. Contour and highlighter | 10. Blush in Sex On Fire | 11. Lip liner in Kiss 'N' Tell | 12. Lipstick in 1975 Red | 13. Lipstick in Red Carpet Red

Zoë Kravitz

Zoë is one of my newest beauty crushes, and this shot totally explains why. It's her flawless complexion, and the way her makeup looks so lived-in and seamless, instead of sitting on top of the skin. Here, the fun part is the smudged silver liner all the way around the eyes. She kept everything else subdued, including her hair. I could stare at this all day!

Michelle Williams

We haven't seen Michelle in forever—not since the 2014 Met Ball, to be exact. I love that she's growing out her hair again, and not doing that Mod style she became so well-known for. This textured, choppy bob is so pretty on her! I especially like how the bangs gently part to frame her face. Makeup is super-simple, with a focus on liner underneath her lower lash lines (a great choice for heavy lids).

Dakota Johnson

Hmm... On the one hand, I love Dakota for being her casual self on the red carpet. I'd rather look at her real-girl makeup than someone with caked-on foundation and elaborate contouring. But perhaps this half-up hairstyle is a bit too casual? I mean, it doesn't even look like she brushed it. I will say that I love her fluffy lashes and her go-to stained lips.

Alessandra Ambrosio

I swear, Alessandra is one of the most consistent celebs on the red carpet. She always looks fresh and glam and just a little bit sexy—which explains why she's been with VS for more than 10 years now. These peachy-pink gloss and blush tones look fab on her, and I love how she does her brown smoky eyes. Not sure the false lashes were needed, but you don't really notice them with the eyeshadow and her amazing natural brows.

Alessandra is wearing: 1. Foundation in 7 Medium | 2. Concealer in 2 Fair | 3. Brow pencil in Grace K | 4. Brow Pencil in Brooke S | 5. Eyeshadow in Jean | 6. Eyeliner in Barbarella Brown | 7. Eyeliner in Eye Cheat (in lower waterlines) | 8. Contour and highlighter | 9. Blush in Moon Beach | 10. Blush in Las Salinas | 11. Blush in Love Glow | 12. Lip liner in Pillowtalk | 13. Lipstick in Bitch Perfect | 14. Lipstick in Stoned Rose | 15. Lip gloss in Hall Of Fame

Nicola Peltz

If you've ever wondered what eyeshadow colour will flatter green eyes, look no further than this picture of Nicola. OMG, the brownish burgudy shadow is outstanding! Not just the colour, by the way, but the application as well—it goes all the way around, and extends out at the edges, and is so well-blended. Same with her blush, which is sitting pretty on top of a seriously flawless complexion. With such strong eyes, she was smart to keep her hair au naturel. A long lob cut would surely take this to the next level.

Karla Souza

Karla makes her Beauty Editor debut today, and I'm getting serious Hilary Rhoda vibes. It's her straight, dark, thick eyebrows, super-sleek updo hairstyle and glowy skin. I've got no complaints, except maybe the false lashes. They seem unnecessary when you've got arches like these!

Chiara Ferragni

So Chiara is that Blonde Salad blogger from Italy... and I have to say, she did very well for a red carpet first-timer. I love her tousled "bronde" hair, dark natural brows and icy blue eyes. And the overall styling and colour palette is actually pretty great, with the exception of her complexion (which is usually where newbies have trouble). More powder and concealing efforts were definitely needed. I'm sure Chiara's skin looked just fine in person, but this is where you realize how talented the top celebrity makeup artists really are!

Kate Hudson

I know she needed her hair up with this dress, but I'm not a fan of these voluminous updos on Kate. I feel like they age her, and kinda feel dated—circa 2010, maybe? That said, her makeup is nice and glowy. And this is what Gwyneth Paltrow needs to do with her lashes instead of the terrible strip ones she tends to wear. I also like Kate's shimmery shadow, peach blush and nude gloss (although the lip liner is a tad obvious).

Olivia Culpo

This is what happens when you let Charlotte Tilbury go wild with your makeup. I love you Charlotte, but it's too much! Olivia is completely overshadowed by the berry-maroon colour—it's in her dress, her earrings, her lipstick and her eyeshadow. Talk about matchy-matchy. I think it would've been enough to just do the eye makeup alone, with a neutral lip.

Olivia is wearing: 1. Illuminating primer | 2. Foundation in 6 Medium | 3. Concealer in 2 Fair | 3. Concealer in 3 Medium | 4. Eyeshadow in Vintage Vamp | 5. Eyeliner in Barbarella Brown | 6. Mascara in Glossy Black | 7. Blush in Love Is The Drug | 8. Lip liner in Savage Rose | 9. Lipstick in Walk of Shame | 10. Lipstick in Glastonberry

Selena Gomez

While Olivia was wearing ALL the makeup, Selena over here was wearing none of it. Or practically none. This is fairly blah compared to the creative looks we've come to expect from her. You know what's different? Her brows are much, much darker. They are the focus. Alas, I don't think Selena is a Cara Delevingne type of girl. I'd rather see her play up her eyes with a smoky look like this one

Alexandra Daddario

Alexandra went for a low-key look, which is nice, because she's been known to way overdo it before. This muted berry lipstick gives a much softer effect than a full-blown red. I also love the natural eyes. Like I've said in the past, her piercing baby blues don't need any false lashes to stand out. See, I never even noticed her good brows before!

Emmy Rossum

Emmy has been doing so well lately on the red carpet, and I do applaud her ability to mix it up. But I don't really like this. First of all, the hairstyle is not doing her any favours, at least not from this angle. The twisted sides and frizzy ends remind me of something you'd see on an '80s librarian (no offense to librarians). Then there is the colour palette. I'm not a fan of the brown dress, and with the same tones on her lids and cheeks, it just looks... muddy. I think she looks way better in fresh pinks, like at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Odeya Rush

If you told me this was the same person we saw in this weekly round-up, I wouldn't have believed you. Odeya looks so different here. More tanned, more heavy-handed on the makeup and much less ethereal. In theory, I like the high ponytail and punchy pink mouth. But the heavy lashes and exaggerated cat's eye liner ruin it.

Eva Amurri Martino

If Eva reminds you a bit of Susan Sarandon, that's because she's her daughter! Overall, I think her hair style/colour and the makeup palette basically work for her. She just needs to tone it down—way down—on the eyes. The pale orange shadow is distracting, the thick black liner is way too harsh and don't even get me started on the lashes!! Also, her brows look too angular, a common thing when you get them threaded instead of tweezed. Team Tweezers 4EVA.

Sarah Gadon

I got to meet Sarah a couple weeks ago at a Giorgio Armani breakfast—she is their new face, and also happens to be Canadian! She is sooo sweet and pretty, it's a real shame about this white face powder situation. It's nowhere near as bad as the original Nicole Kidman, but still a tad distracting. Otherwise, everything is good, most of all the shimmering champagne eyeshadow.

Halston Sage

I feel like Halston's makeup is supposed to go with a whole different outfit. Is it just me or does the metallic lilic shadow and pink lipstick look out of place with this red and black dress? Not that you need to be matchy, but still—there's a disconnect for me. But the biggest problem is the eyelashes. Ugh, they are bad! She is such a pretty girl, why not let her natural beauty shine?

Gwyneth Paltrow

Speaking of false lashes, Gwyneth's pair is pretty tragic as well. (See what I mean about her needing to copy what Kate Hudson is doing with hers?) I've also never loved Gwynnie with her hair up. That has nothing to do with age, by the way. Even back in 1999, when she won the Oscar, it was too severe. I will say something nice; I do like her metallic purplish eyeliner under the lower lash line.

Kim Kardashian

We'll close off with Kim, who is becoming more waxen and alien-esque by the day. I suppose the gold shadow in her inner corners is kind of interesting... but isn't the world tired of seeing the same old spider lashes, heavy contouring and mega-injected lips? I know I am. And just think, it probably took at least 50 steps and three hours to create this look.

Kim is wearing: 1. Eyeshadow in Bette | 2. Eyeshadow in The Dolce Vita ("pop" shade) | 3. Eyeliner in Barbarella Brown | 4. Eyeliner in Eye Cheat (in lower waterlines) | 5. Contour and highlighter | 6. Lipstick in Very Victoria

Who had your favourite (and least favourite) beauty looks on this red carpet?
