The best cuts for fine, curly hair

Q: Hello Bill! I have very fine, curly hair that gets oily and weighed down, forcing me to wash it every two days (at least). My hair is constantly falling out due to stress. I let it air-dry after finger-combing and scrunching to add body, and to keep the curls as intact as possible. However, very rarely does my hair dry in such a way that I can leave it down.

Allison usually wears her fine, curly hair in a low bun.

It is so limp, sparse and poufy that most days I pin it up in a low bun, letting my waves add texture and height to my crown, and pulling out some pieces around my bangs and ears to give it a softer look. It works, sort of—but I would like to find a cut and style that are less blah and mousy.

Allison rarely wears her hair down.

If I keep my hair this length, I want to be able to wear it down more often. If I cut it into a pixie, I want to make sure the style suits my rounder face. As you can see, I have a high forehead, which I don't necessarily feel like I need to hide, but I would like to find a cut and style that flatters me and is sophisticated.

I am open to any ideas, from helpful products to new styling techniques to a super-short cut. My hair grows extremely slowly, so a long style isn't really an option. Thank you so much for your time! I find all of your hair consults to be spot on. — Allison

A: Allison, thank you for your request for a consultation.

Fine hair is very pretty when handled properly, and I think you have a very good grip on it.

Here is a wispy shag that would be a great shape for you. You can just let it fall flat and into your waves.

This shape would look equally good wavy or straight. You could wear it straight on occasion for variety:

A molding paste, such as KMS California Hair Play Molding Paste, would be a great product for your hair:

For curls and waves, I would apply it to wet hair. When you want to wear your hair straight, apply it on dry hair.

Use it sparingly, because too much will make your hair heavy. Also make sure you thoroughly emulsify it in your hands before applying.

This is another styling choice for this cut:

This is a super-short cut that will work with your hair and face:

It can be worn forward or off your face completely, and it will work well with your wave.

I have to say, my favourite style for your hair type is a classic wavy bob:
