It's finally here—your beauty dispatch from the year's biggest night in television, a.k.a. the 2016 Emmys. Slightly delayed because of this week's big makeover and Better Skin in 7 launch, but now I've got alllll the close-ups, plus makeup details where available!
Let's dive in:
What I like: Emily's incredible blue smoky eyes. The dramatic angular shape is straight from the runway, and I love how the blue doesn't match her gown—and is only applied to the inner corners. Her sleek updo, and neutral lips and blush, keep the focus where it should be. So glam! What I'd change: Nothing.
Emily is wearing: Foundation in Golden Tan // Concealer in Medium // Eyeshadow primer // Powder in Deep // Blush in Chroma // Highlighter and bronzer // Eyeshadow in 2 // Eyeshadow in 3 // Eyeliner in Navy // Eyeliner in Aqua // Mascara // Brow pencil in Brunette // Lip liner in Secret Agent // Lipstick in Exhibitionist
What I like: Priyanka's matte red lips. Sometimes the classics just WORK. She paired 'em with much subtler eye makeup than she has worn in the past—gone are the heavy false lashes, replaced by a natural look with a light dusting of shimmery gold shadow. Finally! What I'd change: Nothing.
Priyanka is wearing: Toner // Moisturizer // Foundation in 50 Beige // Powder in 42 Beige Rosé // Contour in No. 20 // Blush // Eyeshadow in Tissé Vendôme // Liquid liner in Noir // Mascara in Noir // Lipstick in Rouge Charnel // Lip liner in Rouge Profond
What I like: Emilia's clear lip gloss. Doesn't it feel so fresh?! She bravely kept the makeup minimal on the rest of her face as well—all the better to show off that amazing pair of brows. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Mandy's orange lip gloss and matching blush. Both are pretty bold, but I think they complement her equally bright yellow dress perfectly. Her loose waves keep this from feeling too "done." I love the delicate eyes also! What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Olivia's electric purple liner along her bottom lash lines and waterlines. So fun and unexpected! It definitely makes her usual neutral palette a lot more modern and exciting. What I'd change: This would be cooler without the individual false lashes.
What I love: Kerry's glorious big '70s hair. This is such a departure for her, and I love it! Her makeup is also more daring: black cat eyes with bright gold shadow and soft nude lips. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: America's adorable freckles and tawny lip gloss. She looks sun-kissed, but not bronzed, if you know what I mean. (Just wait until we get to Claire Danes. Yikes!) The loose waves, fun earrings and natural skin texture give her a relaxed '70s vibe. What I'd change: Nothing. The false lashes are surprisingly good!
America is wearing: Moisturizer // Foundation // Concealer // Illuminator // Eyeshadow in Sun Ray // Eyeshadow in Tender Love // Eyeshadow in Quicksand // Eyeliner in Jet Set (upper lash line) // Eyeliner in Foxy Brown (lower lash line) // Liquid liner in Cleo // False lashes // Mascara in Black
What I like: Tatiana's well-blended bronzy-brown shadow. Her lipstick is in the same colour family, which gives her an interesting monochromatic look, without feeling at all heavy. She is wearing false lashes, but you'd never know. What I'd change: I feel like the hairstyle and earrings are a bit "safe."
Tatiana is wearing: Face oil // Moisturizer // Eye cream // Illuminator // Eyeshadow in Nude // Eyeliner in Chocolate Brown // Mascara in Midnight Black // False lashes // Brow pencil and highlighter in Dark Brown // Lip colour in Nude
What I like: Emmy's matching peachy-pink lips and cheeks. She has lightened up her usual dark eye makeup to just natural lashes, super-soft taupe shadow, and some smudgy brown along the lower waterlines. Gorgeous, feminine and shows off her amazing skin. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Sophie's cranberry smoky eyes. You'd think this colour might overwhelm her fair colouring, but the application is so sheer, and the liner all muted and smudgy. Her dark, brushed-up brows frame her face, and her hair is super-romantic. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Amanda's bright blue eyes and bright red lipstick. No wonder red is her signature colour—it just brings her face to life! With strong brows, she doesn't need much eye makeup. I like that her skin isn't powdery. What I'd change: I think the tails of her brows could be filled in a little more carefully. I'm also wondering if an updo wouldn't have suited this dress better.
What I like: Julianne's clean and natural makeup. She's so pale and blonde, it's easy to go overboard with the makeup (like at People's Choice!), but that didn't happen here. What I'd change: I think her brows are too precise, and I'm not sure the slicked roots are working for her.
What I like: Sophia's berry lips and flushed cheeks. This colour is very youthful and pretty on her. What I'd change: She has a lot of brow hair—but like I've been saying for years, just needs better shaping, plus a gel to give them more control. I'd love to see a cleaner eye with the dark lip, and younger wardrobe styling. The dress and earrings are a bit too old-school glam for me.
What I like: Sarah's straight, feathery brows and pink lipstick. Her eye makeup is great also—soft lashes and a shimmery gold all the way around. This is the best I've seen her look! What I'd change: I still think the blonde kinda washes out her skin tone.
What I like: Abigail's bright pinky lipstick. Her hair is great, too—so voluminous and shiny. What I'd change: They're not terrible, but she didn't need the false lashes.
What I like: Viola's violet matte lipstick, paired with a hot pink dress. I feel like she has so much fun with her colour choices! (Not to mention, has the best, most genuine smile on this red carpet.) The side-parted long bob is awesome, and I even like the bold silver shadow. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Kristen's soft peach colour palette. It's on her lips, cheeks and eyes, and really flatters her colouring. No hard lines, just fluttery lashes to make her eyes pop. What I'd change: She could use a touch more powder on either side of her nose, and the lip colour needs blotting/blending.
What I like: Ellie's smooth bob. Her colour looks so fresh and vibrant! I also like the berry red lipstick; it's less predictable than a classic red. What I'd change: Her skin looks a bit dry, so I might have used more creams, less powder.
Ellie is wearing: Primer // Face oil (mixed with foundation) // Foundation // Eyeshadow primer // Powder // Contour // Highlighter in Moonstone // Blush in Ethereal Glow // Eyeshadow in Groundwork // Eyeshadow in Genuine Treasure // Eyeliner in Blacktrack // Eyeliner in Dipdown // Mascara // False lashes // Lip pencil in Nightingale // Lip colour in Light Rosewood // Lip colour in Pomegranate Pink // Lip colour in Sequin
What I like: Padma's vibrant fuchsia mouth. Brights are always so good on this one! Her skin looks very glowy and hydrated. What I'd change: I'm fine with the liner, but her upper waterlines need more filling in to make the skin completely black.
What I like: Kirsten's soft eye makeup. I don't mind the vintagey waves either, although I prefer her with longer, less "done" hair. What I'd change: I don't know about the red lipstick. Not because she has thin lips, but because she's so very fair. Don't you think light, pinky makeup—like this—is more suited to her?
What I like: Hannah's blue liner along her lower lash lines. With natural lashes, "your lips, only better" lipstick and healthy-looking skin, it's all very fresh. What I'd change: Well, I'll say it... her teeth look stained.
What I like: Tina's tousled waves. Not sure if she got help from clip-ins, but she has an impressive mane of hair here. The makeup is also good—not heavy, not drying. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Amy's coral-ish lip colour is so nice. I also like her eyeliner job, and still loving the red hair for her. What I'd change: I'd brush out her waves and lose the false lashes. I'd also fill in her brows so they appear straighter and fuller, not so arched and pointy.
What I like: Julia's silvery-grey eyeshadow and pink blush. She is one of the rare few who can wear these cool-toned shades. What I'd change: Er, what is going on with the lip liner? The ring around the lips look is NOT cool.
What I like: Maisie's statement green eyeshadow. You know what, good for her! I love when celebs play with colour in a catwalk-inspired way. Because the rest of her makeup is super-natural, this actually works. What I'd change: What doesn't work is her hairstyle. The heavy bangs and bun hide her very cute features. I wish she wore her hair this way. There are some amazing brows under there!
What I like: Julie's big blonde wavy bob. This is actually one of my favourite hairstyles! What I'd change: The makeup's a bit aging. I wouldn't put so much liner underneath her eyes, and her lip liner desperately needs blending. A muted soft lip would be way more current.
What I like: Claire's gold glitter eyes! Yes, I really do—and who would've thought she'd be the one on this red carpet to execute one of fall 2016's biggest makeup trends? What I'd change: Alas, the spray tan situation is OUT OF CONTROL. What the what?! Example number 671 of why it's best to just embrace and love your own natural skin tone.
