The year's biggest hair and makeup moments.
19 memorable beauty looks

Glitter for grown-ups. Wet hair. Matchy-matchy makeup. Or no makeup at all....

These were just a few of the beauty statements that defined 2016. As the year draws to a close (and not a moment too soon!), let's reflect back on the red carpet looks we won't soon forget:

Elle Fanning's Glitter Eyes

Glitter makeup was a major runway trend for fall 2016, and Elle Fanning was one of the earliest and best real-life adopters. At the Saint Laurent show in February, she paired a generous dusting of glitter all over (and under) her eyes with black liner, fresh skin and pink stained lips.

Elle is wearing: Cream eye colour in Black // Glitter in Silver // Glitter in Gold

Alicia Keys' Bare Face

Alicia Keys started a #nomakeup movement after penning an essay on Lenny and stepping out at the BET Awards with a completely bare face. When you have skin as flawless as hers, it's no doubt an easier statement to make—but still a welcome and needed one after 2015's heavy-handed Insta-clones.

Bella Hadid's Non-touring

Speaking of contouring, Bella Hadid stepped out in Cannes with a fresher, dewier interpretation that has been dubbed "non-touring." There's some subtle sculpting, but we can still see her real, healthy skin texture, and the way it catches the light is sooo beautiful.

Bella is wearing: Moisturizer // Foundation in 3 Fair // Concealer in 2 Fair // Contour and highlighter // Blush in First Love // Powder in 1 Fair // Eyeshadow in The Sophisticate // Eyeshadow in The Dolce Vita // Mascara in Glossy Black // Lipstick in Penelope Pink

Jessica Biel's Matchy Liner

Remember when matchy-matchy was considered a faux pas? Not anymore. As Jessica Biel demonstrated at the Independent Spirit Awards, wearing a liner in the same shade as your dress can have gorgeous results—especially in this vibrant blue.

Emily Ratajkowski's Smoky Eyes

Smoky eyes will never go out of style, but this year, a new way of wearing them went mainstream. Emily Ratajkowski's pair at the Emmys is one of the best examples in both colour and shape. The product goes all the way around the eyes, in an exaggerated feline shape, and is a seamless transition from turquoise to navy.

Emily is wearing: Foundation in Golden Tan // Concealer in Medium // Eyeshadow primer // Powder in Deep // Blush in Chroma // Highlighter and bronzer // Eyeshadow in 2 // Eyeshadow in 3 // Eyeliner in Navy // Eyeliner in Aqua // Mascara in Black // Brow pencil in Brunette // Lip liner in Secret Agent // Lipstick in Exhibitionist

Taylor Swift's Platinum Hair and Vampy Lips

We can no longer accuse Taylor Swift of playing it too safe. For this year's Met Gala, she rocked not only a new platinum blonde hair colour, but also a deep, vampy, matte lipstick (another one of 2016's big runway trends).

Taylor is wearing: Lip colour in Oh Lady

Naomi Campbell's Glitter Lips

Elle Fanning wan't the only one to embrace glitter this year. At the MTV Video Music Awards, Naomi Campbell wore it all over her lips in a vibrant ruby red, proving that the sparkly stuff can work at any age (she is 46!). Doll-like lashes and sleek, straight hair completed the look.

Naomi is wearing: Lipstick in Vermillion Venom

Cara Delevingne's Braided Part

Cara Delevingne always brings an element of edginess to the red carpet, and for the MTV Movie Awards, it was a miniature braid. But it didn't just hang there—it snaked down her part and darted behind one ear to add interest to her tousled hair.

Cara is wearing: Serum // Moisturizer // Foundation // Powder // Blush in Praline //  Bronzer in Seduction // Eyeshadow in Peach // Eyeshadow in Lilac // Eyeliner in Caviar // Eyeshadow in Deep Night (to smudge eyeliner) // Brow gel // Mascara // Lipstick in Stripped

Rooney Mara's Futuristic Beauty

When Rooney Mara walked the Oscars red carpet in this structural hairstyle (there are three buns down the back), more than a few people noticed a resemblance to Rey from 'Star Wars.' But equally forward-thinking was her makeup, which emphasized both eyes and lips on top of insanely flawless skin.

Rooney is wearing: Serum // Foundation in 10 Beige and 12 Beige Rosé // Powder // Concealer in SC-2 (to highlight under brows) // Blush in Rose Pètale // Brow pencil in Brun Cendré // Waterproof mascara in Noir // Lip liner in Cinnamon // Lipstick in La Sensuelle

Emilia Clarke's Natural Brows

After a few seasons of overworked brows, the pendulum is finally swinging back to a less precise and more natural—even ungroomed!—look. Emilia Clarke, at this 'Game of Thrones' premiere, exemplifies the new softness. Increasingly, we're seeing celebs who are just leaving their brows alone.

Kristen Stewart's Grunge Glam

Pairing a bleached-blonde bob and intentional roots with creative, sophisticated makeup was a game-changing combination for Kristen Stewart in Cannes. The new grunge-meets-glamour look brought a fresh attitude to the red carpet, and solidified her new identity apart from the 'Twilight' series.

Kristen is wearing: Serum // Foundation in 30 Beige // Powder in No. 20 // Eyeliner in Noir Intense // Liquid liner in Noir // Mascara in 10 Noir // Brow powder in 50 Brun // Lip liner in Rouge Profond // Lipstick in Rouge Charnel

Ciara's Silver Hair

Metallics were everywhere at this year's Met Gala, but nobody committed like Ciara. She took the theme to a whole other level by sporting bright silver hair, styled in finger waves and adorned with matching bobby pins.

Ciara is wearing: Brow pencil in Chocolate Brown // Eyeshadow in Sirocco // Eyeliner in Celestial // Eyeshadow in Smoky Nudes // Eyeshadow in Sun Worship // Eyeshadow in Let It Shine // Mascara in Deep Black

Elizabeth Olsen's Highlights

The standout hair colour of the year belonged to Elizabeth Olsen. At the 'I Saw the Light' premiere, she debuted a wheaty, sun-kissed shade achieved via a technique her colourist calls "flamboyage." Similar to balayage, the highlights are painted on by hand, but with lighter ends and darker roots.

Elizabeth is wearing: Bronzer in Bronze Age // Eyeshadow in Copper Sparkle // Eyeliner in Black/Brown

Janelle Monáe's Double Buns

At the Critics' Choice Awards, Janelle Monáe had the prettiest throwback to the '90s in the form of double buns. Though the trend made waves earlier in the year at Coachella, this time, it had a new sophistication—thanks to red lipstick, tight waves and just the right amount of frizz.

Zoey Deutch's Red Eyeshadow

Many celebs experimented with red- and burgundy-toned eye makeup this year, but nobody wore them better than Zoey Deutch at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic. In another example of matchiness, she repeated the tone of her floral dress all over her lids. With fresh skin, nude lips and big brows, it's such a fresh way to wear colour.

Zara Larsson's Wet Hair

Wet hair made a splash on the red carpet in 2016, and the way Zara Larsson wore hers at the MTV Video Music Awards was my favourite. In an unexpected grey hue and slicked back off her face, it gave her major mermaid vibes.

Lupita Nyon'go's Head Wrap

Lupita Nyong'o, who is already known for wearing colourful makeup, added a new element to her ensemble at the 'Queen of Katwe' premiere: an oversized head scarf. "A makeup artist's dream," according to Nick Barose, the piece drew even more attention to the pink lipstick and purple shadow, while nodding to her Kenyan roots. (We saw a similar wrap on Alicia Keys!)

Lupita is wearing: Eyeshadow in Mauve Cherie // Eyeliner // Mascara // Lip balm // Lip liner // Lipstick in Rose Lancôme

Leave it to model Lily Eldridge to make bold, gold brows look beautiful and chic. At the Met Gala, she wore her gilded arches with matching liner, natural lashes and lots of gleaming, healthy skin.

Lady Gaga's David Bowie Tribute

Last but not least, who could forget Lady Gaga going full Bowie at the Grammys? Her homage to the late musician featured a flaming red mullet, bleached brows and bedazzled blue lids.

Lady Gaga is wearing: Concealer in 01 Bavarian Cream // Foundation in 05 Light Porcelain // Powder in 05 Porcelain // Contour in 26 Tranquil // Blush in 04 Love at First Sight // Highlighter in 01 Stardust // Eyeliner in 29 My Boyfriend's Jeans // Eyeliner in 24 Surfer Babe // Eyeliner in 05 Navy Baby // Mascara in Ultra Black // Swarovski Crystal embellishments // Lip liner in 1 Bright Coral // Lipstick in No. 28 Just Married // Lip gloss in 07 You Fancy
