Woman applying concealer

Just like you need a shoe wardrobe and a jeans wardrobe and, arguably, a white T-shirt wardrobe, today I would like to establish that you need one more type of wardrobe in your life: a concealer wardrobe.

After all, I consider myself a bit of a concealer connaisseur. It’s the one product I won’t leave the house without (although blush is a close second) and the one product that I feel makes the biggest overall difference in your appearance. Unless you’re one of those genetic freaks with stupidly flawless and even-toned skin, that is. In which case, feel free to skip this post. (Although I still maintain that you should probably adopt my five-second trick for looking well-rested.)

Anyway, there are many reasons I like to exercise my concealer options each morning. Some days, you may want something organic. Others may require a long-lasting waterproof formula. You might have a flaming red pimple that needs the most heavy-duty coverage possible. Or you need to camo some dark circles and want to throw some brightening action in the mix. See what I mean? Come take a peek at all the concealers I’ve known and loved… Keep reading »

CFDA Fashion Awards 2011 - Lucy Liu

Did you know? Kim Kardashian is getting married on Saturday. I am sure you’ve all been counting down the days. I was just visiting her makeup artist’s blog (his name is Mario Dedivanovic) and he is apparently soliciting ideas. I quote: “If you could chose [sic] a look for Kim on her wedding day, what would it be? Radiant/natural? or sexy/glam?  Leave your comments! Xo

So far, nobody has commented, which means Mario better have a plan of his own. And I really, REALLY hope it’s not “sexy/glam.” Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t want to see sexytime makeup (or wardrobe) at a wedding. Dark, smoky eyes, obvious fake lashes, trendy colours and my top pet peeve, in-your-face cleavage, just do not belong. I know it’s not very Kardashian-esque, but this is a time to look PRETTY—whether you are the bride or a guest. So yes, Mario, radiant and natural is defo the way to go.

And on that note, I received a couple of Twestions (Twitter questions) recently from peeps needing help with what makeup to wear to a wedding. Well, obviously I have a point of view. So once you’ve followed my tips for wedding prep, and figured out what to do with your hair, check out these 13 wedding makeup looks to get inspired! Keep reading »

Dark circles

Today we have a very, VERY important reader question to attend to, because it deals with what is maybe the most important makeup task of all time. (Well, other than having properly shaped brows, that is.)

I’m talking about concealing the dark shadows around your eyes. Newsflash: we all have them. Even if you wouldn’t go so far as to say you have actual circles (which materialize in a crescent shape directly underneath your eyes), you’re still going to have some discolouration—maybe purplish, maybe greenish—at the inner and outer corners. (And maybe you’re lucky and have it on your eyelids too. Yay!) This is why I repeatedly say that if you do nothing else to your face, applying concealer to the inner corners is a MUST. People who say they “don’t need” any concealer are clearly either a) 14 years old or b) lying to themselves.

BUT. Makeup companies have been confusing people for some time now with products like YSL’s famous Touche Éclat. Such as reader Roxy, who left this very excellent question in the comments the other day:

“I have to say that I don’t know too much about using illuminators under the eye. I’ve had the YSL counter lady try the Touche Éclat on me once, and I didn’t find that it gave me enough coverage. Would the Éstee Lauder product be the same way?  Perhaps it’s me that needs to get used to having dark circles ‘illuminated’ instead of covered up by matte concealer?”

Boy, do I have lots to say on this topic. Keep reading »
