So here's the thing. I'm a big fan—big, BIG fan!—of the tone-on-tone look for hair. Yep, I'm happiest when the base colour and the highlight colour(s) get to play happy families because they are from the same family, with only the slightest variation between them. It's simply more on trend, and also more natural-looking. And you will notice that it tends to fool people, especially men, into thinking that you were born with your artificial hue of choice. See here, and here and here if you have not yet embraced this.

HOWEVER. You maybe should forget everything I just said when it comes to the subject of makeup.

That's right! The NEW thing is, apparently, to mix your warms with your cools. Not literally—that would just create some vile brownish greenish grey—but as in wearing makeup in both tones at once, on different areas of your face, at the same time. YSL's official makeup artist told me so this morning, so it must be true.

Let me explain.

Remember when the whole world discovered lip gloss? My memory's a bit fuzzy on the exact chain of events, but it was sometime during the late '90s or early '00s—you know, back when we thought it was a good idea to wear velour tracksuits, trucker hats and thongs that peeked out from the back of our low-rise jeans. (Klassy.)

Anyway, during this era there were two must-have products: M.A.C Lip Glass and Lancôme Juicy Tubes. Surely you've tried them? These were what we might call first-generation lip glosses. Adequate, yes, but if I can be blunt? Not exactly an enjoyable user experience. (Constantly having to remove your hair from your lips whenever you stepped outside was mildly annoying. As was having your significant other recoil from kissing you.)

And this is why today's post is dedicated to an idea whose time has come: the "gloss-balm." A.k.a. my new favourite beauty category.

I may have come down hard on Mila Jovovich last year for going hog wild on the orange (dress, eyeshadow, blush AND lipstick)... but in general, I like when things match. You know, like bras and panties. Shoes and handbags. Bacon and eggs. It helps one make sense of the world.

So that's why I'm torn on the topic of whether you should match your makeup to your outfit. For every instance where it looks terrifically chic, there's another where it's a bit too... considered. Sometimes the surprise of a contrasting colour on the eyes or the lips just elevates the entire outfit, in that "I just threw this on but of course I always look this gorgeous" kind of way.

And so, with helpful visual aids, I've compiled some guidelines on the whole matching subject. Obviously Selena Gomez, above, is demonstrating Makeup Matching Rule #1: If your lipstick, eyeshadow, eyelashes, hair accessory and faux tatts are ALL the same colour as your dress, the calendar had better say October 31st.

Here are the rest!

(And my Christina Hendricks fixation goes way back.) But now, may I share the latest bit of breaking news? It's just been announced that Amy will play Lois Lane in the upcoming Superman remake. I like this casting a lot better than, say, Teri Hatcher... but I'm not gonna lie, that opinion is 100 percent based on her hair colour, which I am once again slowly inching toward. (Although I'll probably stop at the strawberry, since I don't really have the colouring to properly fake it.)

But if YOU can pull off faux red—or if you're lucky enough to be a natural—then this post is for you, because while I'm obviously jellis of your hair colour, there are definitely some makeup challenges that come along with it.

Here's the q from reader Jessica:

I'll let you in on a little secret about beauty editors. Many, if not most, could be featured on the show Hoarders, thanks to massive beauty product collections acquired over the years of working in magazines. Anything extra-special (like limited-edition palettes, or with the name Tom Ford attached) goes straight into what we call "the archives." Not to be used, EVER, but pulled out every once in a while to just fondly gaze at. (I know, we're weird.)

But then there are the masses and masses of everyday prodz—dozens of mascaras, lip liners, eyeshadows, you name it—that we keep on hand. Not just because having to actually purchase makeup strikes fear in our hearts (since the one perk of our jobs is that we have an abundant supply). It also brings us immense joy to be able to reference a product collection (Clarins, 2005) and then actually locate it, or, most importantly of all, to be able to search our stash and then gift friends/family with the exact perfect shade of blush/foundation/lipstick.

And so I'm probably the wrong person for reader Melody to ask "how much makeup is TOO much?" But I'm going to give it a try anyway—because if there's one thing I know after all of these years in the biz, it's what you really need versus what's just nice to have.

They really aren't. I mean, have you thought about it? I have, because I am ridiculous enough that I can call it my "job" to consider such things. And for a long time now, I've had issues with medium tones: you know, roses, tawny pinks, etc. (Throw anything frosty or pearl in there, like the lady above, and you've really hurt me.)

Anyway, I hadn't given this much thought other than how it pertained to lipstick shades. But then yesterday's post featuring Emily Blunt's "in-between phase" in hair colour inspired an off-blog discussion with my friend Liza, and we came to the conclusion that medium tones are just not cool, on any body part, EVER. (Okay, maybe on the eyelids. Or if you're a supermodel. But that's it.)

Now, I realize that the descriptor "medium tones" is a bit vague, so today I'm going to break down exactly what I mean—with helpful imagery!—so that together, we can banish medium tones from our lives forever.

Besides Chanel's gorgeous twist on wingy eyeliner and blush, another makeup highlight from Paris Couture Week has to be the purple shadow at Valentino.

It has me asking myself: Self, why don't you show the purples more love?

I mean, one could really argue that purple is actually a neutral, because it's one of those colours that anyone can wear. They really can. (Brown, on the other hand, looks amazing on Hilary Duff, but as someone with a lot of pink undertones in her skin, I've never felt completely myself in it.) But purples, or more correctly, PLUMS, can flatter all skin tones—perhaps because they echo the natural hue of our lips. (And you already know that berry, which is in the same colour family, is the one universally flattering lip colour—yes?)

Let's explore how it was done at Valentino (and also why purple on the eyelids is infinitely more flattering and easier to wear than purple on the mouth).
