Would you want to smell like Jennifer Aniston?

July 22, 2010 in Fragrance

Apparently that means citrus, rose water, wild violets, amber and jasmine. Which is what beauty products smell like, apparently, because in order to help direct the perfumers who created her new scent, Jennifer Aniston brought in her fave hair serum and a lotion (as well as a candle) for inspiration.

Think perfumers only make perfumes? Nope—they tinkered with your shampoo and moisturizer, too

July 22, 2010 in Fragrance

This is a picture from my trip to Procter & Gamble’s headquarters in Cincinnati a few weeks ago. It’s a mural in one of their hallways—bet you didn’t know they make Joy by Jean Patou, did you? (At one time, it was the priciest perfume in the world, thanks to the 10,000 jasmine flowers and 28 dozen roses that are required to create just 30 mL.)

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg, really. Not only does P&G make actual perfumes, but, like many other brands (including L’Oréal), they put an INCREDIBLE amount of brainpower into figuring out what every other beauty product you use should smell like.

Gallery: Anti-cellulite creams, scrubs and treatments (to make wobbly bits at least *feel* firmer)

July 21, 2010 in Bath & Body

So here’s the deal: any anti-cellulite product you find on store shelves is definitely not, under any circumstances, going to get rid of your cellulite. Sorry hon. I’m asked this question a lot and I know we’d all love it if a cream could make lumpy, jiggly flesh disappear… but it ain’t gonna happen. Think about it—if results were that dramatic, it would have to be labelled as a drug.

And yet what they DO do—some better than others—is temporarily tighten up the upper layer of your epidermis so that it might feel and look a teensy bit firmer and smoother for a few hours. And for lots of us, who need all the help we can get, that’s good enough!

Tom Ford’s new lipsticks are insanely luxurious, flattering and yes, worth the $52

July 21, 2010 in Makeup

By now I’m sure you’ve heard of, seen or maybe even tried out Tom Ford’s new line of lipsticks, called Private Blend Lip Color.

If not, you need to get on that, stat! Because they really are something to behold.

Think of them this way: whereas most companies out there force their R&D arms to work within certain budget constraints when they come up with new products (causing them to cut corners on ingredients, textures, pigments and packaging), Tom insisted on the best of the best. That means these puppies are the most exclusive, highest-end lipsticks on the market today.

Got a beauty question? Ask Marcel Nars

July 20, 2010 in Makeup

Remember Marcel? The last time we saw his cute little mug, he was helping his master François Nars (founder of NARS Cosmetics) promote the new Pro-Prime collection. (I know, it didn’t make sense to me either.)

Anyway! Now the pooch is playing beauty guru: on Thursday, July 22nd, he’ll be answering questions!

So… what do you think of the “undercut”?

July 20, 2010 in Hair

It all started with Rihanna. Or at least that’s when I first paid attention to this hair “trend.”

But then I started noticing evidence elsewhere of the undercut—a style that involves shaving away a section of hair and then leaving the rest long. I saw it on the street, on an otherwise very pretty and stylish girl at Anthropologie… and now, in this Daily Mail story:
