Sometimes I see a photo of Cameron Diaz and I think, what a shame—all that time surfing in the sun has sure taken a toll. (Sorry if that sounds mean, but you know how much beauty editors preach about the Church of Sun Protection.)
But then I get a glimpse of pics like this one, at the MTV Movie Awards last night, and I fall in love with Cammy all over again.
Okay, it’s mostly due to her great big smile. (Yes, it’s a bit Joker-esque, but there’s no arguing that the girl CAN light up a room when she flashes her pearly whites.)
But I’m also going to give her major credit for getting her hair and makeup just right (not just here but time and time again). She always looks perfectly appropriate: un-fussy but still polished hair, and never too much makeup but just enough to look pretty and fresh. And always, always with a twist, like this highly covetable fuchia lip gloss.
Also great: the liner (all the way around) making her blue eyes pop, lots of blush, fresh skin and the soft, piecey hair. Well done, Cameron!
I get what you’re trying to do here, Whitney Port, with the centre part, loose waves and backcombing.
But doesn’t this hair (at the MTV Movie Awards last night) kinda look like old photos you’ve seen of your relatives in the 1970s?
I swear my mom had this hairdo once, and I don’t mean that as a compliment. Actually, it looked better on my mom, I think.
Anyway, the reason why this isn’t working for me is because it’s just TOO retro.
Backcombing in general is risky. If you’re going to do it, the best way is with a style in the vein of Kate Moss’ shorter, curlier, bouffant, which looks way more modern than this all-one-length, “curtains” sort of effect. (Also note: when I showed you stylist Kristjan Hayden’s version of backcombing for Goody, it worked because the waves in the hair started higher up on the hair shaft.)
I’m also not loving the heavy, obvious liner on the upper lash line. A smoky eye would have looked better with this hair. The combo of retro hair plus retro makeup is just overkill.
I like Anna Kendrick, I really do, but her MTV Movie Awards hair and makeup fell short, in my opinion.
I’m talking about Helmet Hair. The shape of this ‘do is just… odd. Too much volume vertically and not nearly enough horizontally.
(An aside: I’m really noticing the horizontal volume thing lately. It was used with fantastic results on Sarah Jessica Parker in SATC2, specifically in the scene where she’s on the plane back from Abu Dhabi, in order to make her quite narrow face appear look fuller. Good job, stylists!)
Anyway, back to Anna. The other thing that would’ve been better here is more lip colour. She’s just a tad washed out.
And if I can dish out one more piece of unsolicited advice, Anna? Please fix your posture. Have you ever noticed that she always seems a little slumped on the red carpet? Probably it’s a confidence thing—I’d be quaking in my stilettos if I had to pose for a zillion paparazzi. But stand up straight and OWN IT, Anna! You’ll look a hundred times better.
