Bottega Veneta Spring 2010 beauty, fuchsia lipstick

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: what the red lip is to fall/winter, the fuchsia lip is to spring. And here it is at Bottega Veneta in Milan—although a slightly different take to the interpretation at Marc by Marc Jacobs. Here, it’s worn with dewy-fresh skin. Don’t you just love the contrast between the perfectly-applied lip and the bare, au naturel face? SO fresh. (Because matte, truth be told, can take you into old-lady territory… I don’t care how “in” it is.)

One lippie that I think will work for this look is Estée Lauder’s Pure Color Gloss Stick in Pop Pink (I *think* it’s the third one in from the left in the pic below). It’s sort of a hybrid gloss-cum-lipstick and VERY highly pigmented.

One more thing about this look that I want to point out. Notice how she’s not wearing mascara (gasp!) and her eyelashes are NOT EVEN CURLED. But you know what? It looks good, doesn’t it? Let me let you in on a little beauty editor secret: NOT putting anything on your lashes can actually make you look younger. I know, it sounds like crazy talk in this mascara-obsessed world (okay, that’s MY world). But try it! You’ll see.

Oh and the bleached-out brows? Let’s not even go there. I’m just going to pretend they didn’t happen, because otherwise this makeup is just about perfect.

Marc Jacobs spring 2010 makeup

One of the reasons I wanted to start a beauty blog—after years writing about beauty for magazines—was because I’ve got more room here to EXPLAIN the trends.

Sitting in my lofty tower as a magazine editor, I’d often run images straight from the runways… and God help you if you took us literally. I mean, it’s great to say that black lipstick is fashionable—but do we really want people rocking a full Marilyn Manson? Of course not.

The good news is that with every beauty trend, there’s a way to adapt it so it’s wearable. (Well… most of the time, anyway.) Which is why I’ve rounded up a list of my top beauty don’ts—straight from the runways of New York Fashion Week—with some thoughts on how to fix ‘em for real life. Here we go! Keep reading »

I make no secret of the fact that I’d be perfectly happy abandoning city life for a place in the countryside, where I could grow my own flowers and veggies, bake pies with fruit from my orchard, and have a dozen or so animals roaming wild around the property. (Of course, this country abode would need to be less than 3o minutes from a Whole Foods, a shopping mall and some decent restaurants and nightlife—which is why that vision remains a fantasy, at least for the near future.)

Until then, I’ll have to satisfy myself with the cool country vibe Ralph Lauren had going for his spring show. LOVE LOVE LOVE this. I wrote the other day that I’d be happy to wear Anna Sui’s Total Look day in, day out for an entire season… well, it looks like she’s got competition now.

Here’s the full body shot: Keep reading »
